I'm in my first season of a Franchise using the Chiefs.

I'm 6-4 going into the Thanksgiving game with Denver who is also 6-4 (as is San Diego). Larry Johnson has been hurt for 2 weeks and is out for another 2 still. It's a cold night. The referees have on long sleeves. This is football.

It was a hard fought contest. I put together impressive drives, managed to rack up a lot of yards against Denver's #1 ranked D (112 Rushing 220 passing). I did a good job of mixing pass and run, inside and outside, play action and... not play action. I was kept out of the end zone several times inside the 10 because I did not have LJ to pound it in. Bennett would slam right into the line and just fall backward. So it's basically a FG fest. It's 22 to 20 with 36 seconds left. I have a 4th and 5 at the 36 of Denver. I decided to attempt the FG, which I nailed a 52 yarder! I'm now up 5 with 30 seconds left. Denver needs a TD to win.

Denver gets the ball at around the 26. They have less than 30 seconds. First play Plummer launches it and it's knocked down. 20 seconds left. Next play Plummer tries an out which is caught by Rod Smith but out of bounds. It's now 3rd and 10 with 16 seconds remaining. Mind you I was playing in a Dime package running my prevent. It had worked to this point.

Then the unreal happens...

Plummer drops back and just floats one about 5 yards up on the sideline where no one is. Javon Walker turns around from his hail mary dead sprint fly route and comes streaking back and catches it with his momentum taking him back to the line of scrimmage. A pile of red humanity converge on Walker slamming into him. He stumbles, a Chief dives over him, one at his feet another to the outside and Wesley coming up in support from safety. SOMEHOW, Walker manages to spin out of ALL OF THIS, pick up a block on Wesley from some Bronco who I had no idea was even there and proceded to streak 74 MOTHER ****ING YARDS for the Touchdown. Surtain gave chase, but Walker was too fast. All I could do was sit with my mouth hanging open, staring at the screen.

6-4? Losing to the Donks?

Time to dump that franchise, and start a new one. Do it right this time, fercryinoutloud!

I also blame Wesley for this travesty. Was he going all out, or was he just jogging and assuming the other guys were going to make the tackle?

Now that you mention it, yes he did just sort of saunter up there like the play was over.

FWIW I did beat them in Denver. I also put a beating on Seattle.

What level is everyone playing on? I'm using all-pro and so far I'm 4-0. However, I have not won a game by more than 4 points, which makes them all interesting.

Wow, you suck. I don't think I've ever given up a busted-play touchdown on the last play of regulation.

I DID lose to the 49ers though. Vernon Davis carved my ass up.

My question is how does anybody EVER lose to the computer. On All-Madden you can go 15-1 or 16-0 every single year. The AI on the game is retarded most of the time

Count Zarth

That's not true. I've created a set of sliders over time that make the game very challenging yet realistic. On my long-running '06 franchise I didn't win the Super Bowl for like 4 years in a row.

I played my friend. I never pick the Chiefs in computer football as a superstition, so I go for the Saints. I'm using Deuce, and my friend tells me to put in Reggie (I forgot). 16 carries, and 160 yards later, I win the game.

Then, I go and use the Cardinals. That was a slaughter. Edge had 12 carries for 11 yards... yuk.

So I go back to using Reggie and the Saints. The next game was 19 carries for 145 yards and 3 TDs... Then the last game I stuck to my formula and had another 100 yard game... WTF!?!

I don't know what it is about him, but WOW!!! They really made his stamina high, so he works as a 20 carry back. If I was going to have a franchise fantasy style, there wouldn't be a doubt in my mind who would be the starter...

I'm playing on All Pro. I haven't even touched the sliders yet. I usually don't do that until I get a full season under my belt. That way I know what needs to be adjusted. So far, I'm 2-0 while whooping up on both Cinci and Denver. I know this might sound silly, but the games haven't really been extremely easy.

I've never played football on the PC so I'm curious...

Do you guys have to actually play the game; you know, move the players and press buttons to hike the ball, pass, tackle or run, or do you just call the plays and sit back and watch the plays happen?

Count Zarth
09-01-2006, 10:23 AM
You can do either. Coach mode and play mode.

Dartgod

Which does everyone prefer or play the most of. I'm interested in getting this, but I'm not sure I'd like to have to take complete control of the game.

I guess what I'm asking is; is coach mode just as much fun as play mode?

You'd really have to try it for yourself and see. I personally don't play coach mode because I like playing. I like throwing that perfect fade pass into the endzone off play action for a touchdown. I like laying monster hits on receivers coming over the middle.

But coach mode can be fun, too. You can also create your own plays and your own playbook. I have a custom playbook filled with stock plays from several coaches' playbooks and a few custom plays I designed myself.

It just alters how the game plays. You can make it more or less realistic.

I'll give you a Madden horror story: I CAN'T EDIT ANY-GODDAMNED-BODY!

**** you, EA/Tiburon. It feels really "next-gen" to be unable to access features that have been standard since, what, 1995?

I'm going to explain something to you and alot of other EA haters here real quick.....

There's no conspiracy.

EA isn't trying to steal your money.

EA isn't putting shitty games out on purpose.

People don't realize the sheer magnitude of these next-gen projects - the amount of money and resources it takes to create a truly AAA level next-gen title on a short schedule is mind-boggling.

360 Madden 07 began production in late December/early January or so...they went Alpha the second or third week of April. Beta is in June.

For those who don't realize, Alpha means "feature complete". Nothing new goes in after Alpha. The time between Alpha and Beta is for fixing bugs. "Beta" means "release candidate". Aside from the last few major issues that may pop up at the last minute, Beta is shippable.

Situations like this are lose-lose. You either bust your ass to make the game as good as you can...and people will bitch. Or you cancel this year's game and push it back into next year...and people will bitch.

You can't win.

It's not fair to compare the 360 version to the current-gen versions - the PS2/XBox/PC versions have been iterating for YEARS now. "Current Gen" began with the development of Madden 2001 - which started in late 99/early 2000. So, when it comes to current gen, we're talking almost SEVEN YEARS OF CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT.

Madden/NCAA current-gen are incredibly ****ing polished pieces of software. If you're going to compare current-gen to the 360 version...you should probably compare the 360 version of Madden 07 to the PS2 version of...Madden 2002.

Thanks for that incredibly pedantic response, Mecca.

I don't expect the game to be as fully polished and brilliantly shiny as its six-year-old current-gen counterpart, and I'm fine with the growing pains. I'm not, however, fine with the fact that they apparently think it's just swell to remove something as ubiquitous as player editing for no apparent reason.

If they managed to squeeze such rudimentary stuff as being able to change someone's name or number (and what a RESOURCE HOG that must be!) into NCAA, I find it hard to believe it was completely impossible to put it into Madden.

Mediocre atmosphere? Fine. Somewhat lacking franchise? I can deal with it. ****ed up stat engine? I'll get over it, as annoying as it may be. Hall of Famers going into franchises without a slightly complicated workaround, then being described as a "feature?" Stupid, but fixable. No fatigue? I'll believe there's going to be a patch when I see it, but oh well.

Being unable to create a player without going through Superstar mode drills, and having to rely on EA's player ratings, though? Damn near game-breaking, and at the very least, soul-suckingly infuriating. Having to figure out what to do with an 82 OVR-rated William Bartee is not my idea of fun.

While EA may not be intentionally pushing shitty products out the door, they're certainly not going above and beyond when it comes to fixing things that are wrong with the game when they're raking in money hand over fist. Pardon me for being upset by ridiculous design decisions and not crying for poor, pitiful EA.

Blame our fellow consumers. The fatigue issue is a shining example. We have to remember, just like when it comes to the Chiefs, we are a tiny fraction of the total fanbase out there.

I was at Wal-Mart the other day picking up some odds and ends and they were having a Madden tourney to celebrate the release. I stood there for about 5 minutes and watched a game between the Colts and Packers go from 45-35 at halftime to 66-49.

I've come to the realization that EA is creating the game to please their largest demographic and it's obviously working. I've also come to the realization that myself, the guy who wants a working SIMULATION, is not part of that demographic. The 14-year old ADHD kids that mom buys this game for don't want fatigue...they want to chuck the ball to Randy Moss for 75 yards on every down. Unfortunately, they're too young to remember Tecmo Super Bowl.

DJay23

I find it odd that some people buy these games and think it's fun to win every single game and win the super bowl every year of a 30 year franchise. That's boring. While I do try to win every game I play, and get really pissed when I lose games, it still gives it more realism for me if I do lose some of the games, even if it's on a weird last play. I play on All Pro and have my sliders adjusted so that it's as realistic as I can get it. I play on All Pro because I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY ON ALL MADDEN. Why anyone would consider being good at video games a badge of honor, I'm not sure.

Anyway, on the season where the story that started the thread, I was 9-6 going into the season finale with a playoff spot on the line. Win and I'm in. I ended up dominating the Jags, while San Diego loses to give me the AFC west title and the #3 seed. I played San Diego in the first round. After they swept me during the season I was feeling confident adn I beat them in a barn burner.

The next week I had to travel to New York to face the Jets (I know, right?). This was a tough game and one of hte reasons I don't mind if I lose every once in a while rather than blow everyone out by 30. It was a very close battle of attrition. A lot of punts, a lot of field goals. No really long plays. SOme nice long sustained drives. In teh closing minutes of the game, Chiefs down 3 (it was 15-12, I had 4 FG, they had a TD with a failed 2 pt conversion and 3 FG) I was putting together a nice drive. Mixing it up since I still had all my timeouts. It's now under 20 seconds and from about the 30 I execute a beautiful screen to LJ who rumbles down to about the 5. I call my final timeout with about 15 seconds left. I figure 2 shots into the endzone then if nothing tie it up. My first attempt is incomplete, and HOLD on! We have clipping on Jordan Black. Sometimes it seems like that game tries everything to make you lose. Rewind for a second and the Jets drive before this one is sustained on a completely ridiculous overturn of a fumble that KC recovered, that on the replay, YOU COULD NOT SEE THE BALL CARRIER AT ALL! Anyway, I kick the tying FG, go to overtime. Stop the JEts on my 40 get the ball back and proceed to march it down field to kick the game winning field goal. What a feeling.

The AFC Title game was at Cincinnati. They had a quick start, but I answered and actually dominated with solid D and clocking munching ground game. I ended up losing by 1 as I could not stop Carson Palmer. He completed every pass he threw in teh 4th quarter despite trying every kind of pressure and coverage scheme I could find. I wasn't that upset because, hey my D had been getting beat through the air all year. Seemed realistic enough.

So I've just finished the offseason (Trent retired), signed David Carr as my QB and was offered a trade to the #5 spot in the draft by the Colts. I gave them my #30 and the extra 2nd rounder I acquired by trading Priest to San Francisco. I got a top 5 receiver and he'll start Day 1. The only t hing I'm a little pissed about is that looking at my new schedule, it's all ****ed up. I don't know if I have any control over it or not. the first 4 games seem ok, but then i play all 3 division rivals at home back to back to back. Then I go on like a 6 game road trip. Then finish teh season with 4 straight at home. Can this be fixed or do I just have to accept it as a flaw and move on?

I agree with the player edits thing over the superstar mode things like that aren't arbitrarily decided upon - marketing does a lot of research when it comes to which features to include/expand/etc.

People like us like Parker there said, aren't the majority of people buying Madden. Personally I wish Madden was harder. I put the damn thing on All Madden and still win games 52-10. I don't have tons of ****ing beating the shit out of every team I play but there's nothing I can do about that because even the games hardest level is no challenge.

I agree with your post but unlike you I cannot deal with all these things being screwed up.

I'm not asking EA to find the cure for AIDS here, just put the f*cking features in the game that you've had every year. I mean, EA screwed up stuff this year that was FINE last year, so there's really no excuse.

Hall of Famers in franchise, no fatigue, no player editing, horrible stats in franchise mode, having to pay money for alternate jerseys - besides graphics, what redeemable quality could the 360 Madden possibly offer me? These are simply INEXCUSABLE errors.

EA expects us to throw down 60 bones every year for this half assed piece of garbage and we shouldn't complain? Give me a break. This was an embarassing effort by EA and everyone knows it.

I read the post.

Like I said, they're expecting me to pay 60 dollars for this game, more money to play online, and more money if I want alternate jerseys - am I expected to feel sympathy for them?

360 Madden 07 began production in late December/early January or so...they went Alpha the second or third week of April. Beta is in June.

So in those months of creating the game, they managed to screw up/take out features that they had in LAST YEARS Madden 360.

For those who don't realize, Alpha means "feature complete". Nothing new goes in after Alpha. The time between Alpha and Beta is for fixing bugs. "Beta" means "release candidate". Aside from the last few major issues that may pop up at the last minute, Beta is shippable.

So in the time between alpha and beta, how did they not SEE and FIX two MAJOR glaring issues - no fatigue, and Hall of Famers in franchise mode. Those are game killers for me and a lot of other people and there is simply no excuse for them being in the game.

EA didn't screw that up and leave out player editing because of not having enough time, they did it because they have the NFL license all to themselves, so they don't care if they make a half assed game.

Plus, next year they can now advertise having "fully editable players and fatigue!" and hike the price.

You missed this part apparently......

The reason things that are in the regular game aren't in the 360 game is that game has been developed for 7 years this game has been done once. There's alot more work that goes into completely creating a whole new development for a game than one that has been running for 7 years.

Well for the gameplay and the way it looks it is a well done game. It's an extremely well done piece of software for the amount of time it was made in. People expecting that game to have everything the regular versions have is expecting to much.....you're asking them to put 7 years of development into 1 year it's impossible. The only way that could have happened would have been to not release Madden this year then people would have screamed about that.

They essentially threw that piece out and started from scratch on this one. Yes I understand there are screwups in the game but that's to be expected with basically the first year of development of a game for a new console.

After the ESPN franchise came out with a $20 price tag and pretty good game engine EA started to feel the pressure. Instead of sticking their heads down and trying to make the superior product, they chose to do what any corporate conglomerate would. They bought the rights to the NFL. So what it really comes down to is this. EA doesn't give a shit what you think. If you wanna play with Larry Johnson and Trent Green, you'll do it their way. You'll pay for it. And you'll like it. End of story.

Edit: Let me change that last statement. You may not like it, but you'll like it enough to buy it again next year for the sole reason of having updated rosters.
