In your day they were called pterodactyls. Things have evolved a little since then. :p

What the hell is a Hawkeye? History of nickname

The University borrowed its athletic nickname from the state of Iowa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa) (also known as the Hawkeye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkeye) State) many years ago. The state of Iowa acquired the nickname, chiefly through the efforts of Judge David Rorer of Burlington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlington%2C_Iowa) and James G. Edwards of Fort Madison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Madison%2C_Iowa).

Burlington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlington%2C_Iowa) had been established in 1833 after the Black Hawk War of 1832. Mr. Edwards proposed the nickname "Hawk-eyes" in 1838 to "...rescue from oblivian a momento, at least of the name of the old chief," Black Hawk. Edwards, editor of the Fort Madison Patriot, moved his newspaper to Burlington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlington%2C_Iowa) in 1843 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1843) and renamed it the Burlington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlington%2C_Iowa) Hawkeye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkeye) in tribute to his friend Chief Black Hawk.

The two men continued their campaign to popularize the name and were rewarded when territorial officials gave it their formal approval.

'Their' is how you spell the possessive as in "Ohio State football players get their new cars from shady boosters."

'There' is a descriptor as in "Look, there goes Maurice Clarett with a bullet proof vest, 6 guns, and a bottle of vodka".

I hope this was instructive. :p

Ohio State looks good this year. Can they really reload 9 defensive starters? Probably.

I'm going home for the game; I can't wait. Kinnick will be rocking.
Good luck to your Buckeyes this year. Can't wait for the season to start.

Is there any fellow Hawk fans in the KC area? I'm 26, relatively new to KC and looking to meet some people. Hawk fans are preferable. If you are a female and attractive that's even better.

Touche, lesson has been noted and learned. :banghead:

As for the defense I can only hope that Tressel can work some magic with the guys he has available. If not I can see I will have to suffer thru the college equivalency of the Chiefs ALL OFFENSE and NO DEFENSE.

Here's to another great Big Ten season. :toast

Question...What's the Iowa State football team doing on New Year's Day?

Answer......the only incorrect answer is "playing football".

Iowa is Iowa States bitch.

"But we don't consider them a rival! waaaah!"Nice cherry picked stat. Why don't go a little further back than the last 8, like maybe the last 25 years or so.

Besides, ISU wins their bowl game by beating Iowa, then the Hawks go on to play in real bowl games come January.

In the grand scheme of things, the ISU game means little to Iowa. Sure as fans we'd like to see the Hawks continue decades of tradition by piss pounding them. But a month after that ISU game, it's irrelevant.
