I get the point but if it weren't meant to be stood on they wouldn't have made it a carpet.
A pretty lame attempt to put the Bush's patriotism in question.
It has nothing to do with his patriotism.
It has to do with his competence, his lack of self awareness, his efforts to ban deciration of flag unless he wants to trample it in the course of a photo-op. It's the irony of having a president who has spent years figuratively trashing the freedoms that define what it means to be an American in a post-9/11 executive power grab.

How do those that oppose "desecration" of the flag feel about this? Isn't "trampling it underfoot" at least as henious as burning it? ROFL ROFL

I oppose desecration (although I oppose a constitutional amendment). The answer from my pov would be that the offensiveness of the desecration has everything to do with my perception of the intent of the desecrator. If a person carrying a flag trips and accidentally tosses it in the mud, I don't hold it against them. If a person carries the flag to a mud puddle and then throws it in while saying he hates America and hopes that Dick Cheney has a heart attack and dies, I'll be quite offended.

How about somebody purposefully treading on one that was left on the ground? :p

The property rights angle of a conservative/libertarian trump this issue for me.
If the person owns the flag they should be able to do whatever they want with it. :)

I completely agree, from a libertarian-legal point of view. I have no right to stop the guy from throwing his own flag in the mud puddle (property right) or from saying he hates America and wants Dick Cheney to die (speech rights), but I don't have to like it. I assume we have pretty much the same view on this issue. :)

The person who conceived the photo-op and the design team should be fired, but on Bush's list of the 2000 worst things he has done, this probably doesn't make it.

You are correct. You can express your opinion on top of theirs. I wouldn't try doin' it in their yard though. Even I run my territory as a fascism...and yes it is a govt. :p

I agree that it's an awareness issue. Unfortunately, that's par for the course with Bush. He's too wrapped up in his own pomp and in staying on message. Not only does his lack of awareness reflect in little things like this but it also reveals itself in big things like natural disasters and international diplomacy.
