I'm creating a website for my company that will reside on our intranet. I want it to be a spot where employees can read company news. I want various users to be able to add the news on the site itself. It already uses MySQL for some other areas. My thought was to have a MySQL table that would hold the news items and then just show the most current 5 items in the table. My question is this...would this be the best way to implement a news area or is there a better way?

Don't be fool and try to write one, just use something existing. As long as you have PHP/MySQL you should have about 4,000 free ones to chose from at least. Start by searching here for what you want:

www.sourceforge.net

Also, have you considered just providing an RSS feed and then letting each user choose an RSS client? That might be more likely to actually be read.

Yeah, I had thought about that. I've already written an RSS Reader for things such as weather, national news, and local news.

Have you looked into Joomla at all? It doesn't use asp .net, but does use mysql and sort of sounds like what you are looking for.
