View Full Version : A somewhat long recount of my frist ever trip to KC and Arrowhead (with some pics)

Whew. Man, what a buildup. I had booked my trip to Arrowhead back in June. Being my cherry-poppin’ first trip there, I wanted it to be perfect. Well, you all know what went on in the stadium. But other than that, I had a good enough time to return home with absolutely no voice, no cash left in my wallet, a gut full of several pounds of meat and gallons of beer. Let’s just say I was able to pack it in.

I flew in Saturday evening and headed for the ill-fated CP get together at Granfalloon in the Plaza. I got there close to 8 pm and realized I had no idea what anyone looked like nor where they were sitting. I walked around and asked the few people in Chiefs gear if they were from Chiefs Planet. After getting a series of confused looks I just started talking to anybody. I met a group of drunk Chiefs hooligans who were heading over to Kona Grill, so I followed them over there. I think I was a novelty to them: guy from Los Angeles, never been to Kansas City, longtime Chiefs fan. Every time I told somebody that, they looked at me like I was Forrest Gump.

So we hit Kona Grill, then Cactus Café. Cactus was a kind of ghey, dirty, top 40 place. Everywhere we went there were bachelorette parties. At Cactus, a girl came up to me with some friggin’ bachelorette checklist. She said, “She needs to dance with a bald guy.” This pissed me off a bit. I’m not totally bald. I shave. But they were pretty cool about it, so I obliged. My dancing mainly consisted of freakin’ on back with a severely angry ass-slapping barrage at which they pulled her away pronto. Put that on your friggin’ checklist, ladies. Then two minutes later a stout Latina grabs me on the arm and points over to her bachelorette. “She has to take a picture with a bald guy” and starts yanking me towards the bar. What’s with the friggin’ bald guy stuff. WTF??!! :cuss:
I replied, “No way.”
“C’mon, it’s for her checklist”
“Yeah? Well I have a checklist that says I have to talk to a fat chick. So I’m gonna check that off now. Thanks”
She didn’t like that. She said, “F*ck You!”
I said, “Hey you asked for it.” I was just being honest.

I bolted from there before she could find someone to kick my ass.

The next morning I got up early and headed out for the game. It was raining. I took the “express” shuttle to the stadium. “Express” is a misnomer, as it made a pretty long loop around several stops. I got to Arrowhead about 10:20, much later than I wanted to. I wanted to see the Teepee Tribe and had planned to visit three CP tailgates. The next hour would be spent speed-walking through the lot with two warm 22-oz cans of Bud sloshing around in my cargo short pockets.
I found the Superfans at the Teepee. That was a cool scene. The live band playing the touchdown song was inspiring. They threw a few Bungle fans in the middle. Those guys were good sports. They looked damn scared, though!

I hooked up with BigRedChief and the Chiefscoalition guys first. BRC sort of looks like a cross between the dad from the Incredibles and the Family Guy dad. Really nice group he’s got there.

From there I bolted over to Phobia’s tailgate. DaFace was hangin’ there. I introduced myself and those guys said “TinyE. We thought you were a big fat guy.” Yeah, well, just give me a few years.

From there I headed over to Chenz A!’s Budweiser tailgate. That was sweet. Super nice dude, and they had a fenced-in area with a Bud tap trailer and huge BBQ spread. Consumed mass quantities as quickly as possible as it was past 11:30 and I wanted to be inside in time for the Anthem.

Got in, found my seat: Field level 40 yard line, 27th row (thanks eBay). I looked up behind me and saw King Karl. He could have spit on me from his box. The Bungles entered the stadium and were greeted with a healthy BOO, especially #85.

We had a moment of silence for the 911 victims. That got my eyes a bit misty. I was already choked up just being at legendary Arrowhead, looking up at the sea of red and the football-shaped scoreboards, and then the national anthem with A-10 Warthog flyover put me over the top.

I recorded that and put it on YouTube here:

The game was the game. You saw it. Looked pretty bad in person, too. Actually I thought our D was holding up well in the beginning. We forced some good 3-and outs. The LJ fumble on his first carry and the Dante punt drop were bad momentum-killers. I was sure we’d be looking at 7 Bengal points when they picked up Dante’s fumble. But we held them to a FG. Last year, they would have been over the goal line in two plays.

A lot of people seated around me looked like corporate clients or rich, older season tix holders. It was mainly me and two other guys in our section standing up, doing the “make some noise” arms gesture before people got up on 3rd downs. There were some older people with seat cushions in front of me, so they weren’t standing up. After a few people bolted after the second downpour I moved up closer where I could move around and bang on the seatbacks.
I didn’t see the Trent hit because the entire sideline was in the way, and they obviously didn’t show the replay in the stadium. But that was a white-knuckle fifteen minutes. We didn’t know anything.

The TD drive was a glimmer of hope too little too late, but it really energized us to see Gonzo as a target once again. His catch in the endzone was awesome. I thought it was going to be an INT. Looked like there were three Bengals around him. He just reached up and yanked it in. Guy’s got Superglue hands.

However, being down 20-10 that late in the game took some fire out of the “We’re gone beat the hell out of you.” I’m just glad I got the chance to do it.

The stadium really emptied out after they went up 23-10. I stayed until the end and crept down to the fence. The players were obviously pissed. They hit the tunnel without looking up. Kawika Mitchell came up with his helmet still strapped, he never looked up at us, he just walked up to the fence, a guy handed him a 1-year old (his son?) and he disappeared underneath. Gonzo came up and didn’t look up either, but he peeled off his gloves and tossed them to us. I came inches away from nabbing one :banghead:
Now they were interviewing Palmer on the field and fans were screaming “Talk about that Cheap Shot!” I bolted before it got ugly.

Sure it would have been perfect if Trent was still in and if we’d had a better game, but I’m still really glad I finally got to KC. Going by myself was still a good experience, I’d do it again, no problem, and I plan to.

I hope to meet more of you guys next time. Arrowhead the stadium/tailgate lived up to its lore, and the parts of KC I saw were really nice. There are a lot of hot female football fans out there  All we get out here in L.A. are holdout Raider ladies with too much makeup and flabby upper arms.

There are some pics posted below, hope I didn’t bore ya.

Great story----rep to you.

You know, if you came out more often, and wore your Evel Knievel outfit to the games, and pushed your way to the front rows, you too could become a SuperFan icon.

LOL I do have a wicked Knievel suit. I considered it, but would only do it if I had season tix. Plus, not too relevant to this team. Patriots, maybe. I might do the red devil next time. That's a good one for us baldies.

I say that since this was your first trip to the sacred ground known as Arrowhead; AND you wore a Green jersey you brought the bad karma to the team and caused Trent to get injured!!

YOU ARE NEVER WELCOME HERE AGAIN!!!

(unless you have a ticket for me)

Good to meet you TinyE, hope you had fun despite the rain and bad play.

It has been a rough start to the week, but for the record, I didn't shoot myself, or kick my cat.

Time to regroup, and go beat the Broncos.
