Chiefs agree to terms with WR Rod Gardner
http://www.nbcactionnews.com/kshb/sp_action_sports/article/0,1925,KSHB_9428_4989293,00.html

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Wednesday that the club has agreed to terms of a two-year contract with WR Rod Gardner. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.

Gardner (6-2, 215) enters his sixth NFL season, joining the Chiefs as a free agent after spending the 2006 preseason with Green Bay. A member of both the Panthers and Packers in 2005, Gardner appeared in 12 games (one start) and totaled 13 receptions for 151 yards (11.6 avg.) with one touchdown.

Gardner originally entered the NFL as a first-round selection (15th overall) of Washington in the 2001 NFL Draft. Gardner played four seasons with the Redskins, seeing duty in 64 contests with 61 starts. In his five prior NFL campaigns, Gardner appeared in 76 games (62 starts) and caught 240 passes for 3,148 yards (13.1 avg.) with 23 TDs. Gardner topped the 1,000-yard receiving mark with Washington in 2002, catching 71 balls for 1,006 yards and eight TDs.

The Jacksonville, Florida native was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference and first-team All-America selection as a senior at Clemson. Gardner ended his collegiate career with 166 receptions for 2,498 yards and 13 TDs. He was a prep standout at Raines High School in Jacksonville, Fla.

As per Chiefs policy. As per Chiefs policy.

If you say that over and over, it starts to lose meaning.

Now someone can ask Herm the Gardner question without getting, we have not signed anyone officially answer.

Looks like Hannon is gone. I guess they weren't comfortable with 2 of the 5 receivers being rookies.

If Gardner can pick up the offense quickly, he'll help KC out this year. I believe that's always been the knock on Gardner. GB complained about his inability to adjust routes, etc. Hopefully he'll be able to fit into this offensive system...(that hasn't changed.)

Is that official? That is who I assumed would get released to make room but had not seen anything yet.

Good signing, hopefully that 1st rd talent is still buried inside him somewhere. Maybe Joiner can work some magic.

I just got off the phone with Carl, put new ribbons in the dot matrix and I'm printing up Super Bowl Tickets as we type.

Spained my ankle over the weekend and have been putting in eyedrops.

No worries.

It would have to be an upgrade over our #5 WR.

He's a big fella, can he play ST's?

I'm guessing they'll drop Hannon as quietly as they can and try to move him to the PS. I can't imagine someone putting OUR #5WR on their active roster.

As for Gardner.....eeeeh.

He's big and has talent, but he's been cut in Washington, Denver and Greenbay for a reason.

If nothing else, he should have some insite as to Denver's O for this coming week.

IF we were set on picking up a Denver castoff, I think I'd have prefered Watts for upside potential.

Anything is possible. Kennison bounced from team to team before he landed here.

When in the world did Gardner play for Denver. I think Washington and GB are the only two teams he's ever played a game for.

I'm pretty sure he was on Denver's roster this preseason. Then went to Greenbay where he was cut.

Gardners never been on Denver.....Washingon-Carolina-Green Bay. That's his team history. Denver had the other bust....David Terrell.

I'm wondering who they'll cut for to make room for Rod Gardner. I just looked on the Chiefs roster page and the dept chart and they had removed Chris Hannon and had given Rod Gardner the number 85. Now I went back out there and Chris Hannon is back on the roster and behind Gardner on the depth chart.

Frosty
09-13-2006, 12:34 PM
That's weird. Hannon was off of there earlier. They are showing 54 on the roster. Maybe they meant to put Hannon in the practice squad section?

philj22
09-13-2006, 12:39 PM
That's what I was thinking, but that still would mean they would have to release someone from off of the practice squad. I still count 8 on it. Who knows what the hell they're doing. I know Peterson doesn't. lol

So why Gardner over Darius Watts or Charles Rodgers? Something that concerns me is that he's been cast aside by three different teams and isn't as young as the other two guys. Did the Carl really believe that Gardner was the most talented available and would fit in the best - especially with his history of not being able to comprehend an offensive playbook? Another concern - the Chiefs Offensive playbook hasn't exactly been the easiest one to comprehend the past few years....

Report has it that Gardner is Epileptic and has seizures mostly while running routes. His Epilepsy was the only reason he used to wear a helment before going to college.

Just guessing here, but it could be that the Chiefs felt they had recievers that have speed to stretch, but no one that is big and strong, with experience, that can get open and make catches in the middle of field to move the chains, aside from Tony.

can he play tackle? because without someone besides "the jordan black expressway" playing tackle, we might get shutout in denver.

I agree, Stallworth or the other two would have been better choices, but anything is better than what we've got...let's just hope his Round 1 quality will shine through

Well, Stallworth is off the table now, but the other guys are still there. You know, it's not like we're set at receiver now with Gardner, maybe bringing in one of the others (Watts perhaps?) as well might be worthwhile? Or has he already visited the Chiefs? If so, anyone know how that visit went?

Fortunately there at least seem to be options for a receiver on the market right now. Whether any of them pan out for the teams that sign them is another story. I have no clue where we could get another offensive tackle - haven't heard too many free agent candidates mentioned that we could bring in for a look.

its probably because unlike the other guys, Gardner has actually produced on the field. He had a 1000 yard recieving season his 2nd year in the league. His story is not too unlike Eddie Kennison's. Perhaps lighting can strike twice for us?? The guy has all the physical tools, he just needs to mature and grow up.

ESPN's John Clayton (http://www.kffl.com/link/125) reports free agent WR Charles Rogers (http://www.kffl.com/player/5911/nfl) (Lions) did not look too impressive in his workout with the Miami Dolphins (http://www.kffl.com/team/22/nfl), as he didn't show great speed or catch the ball all that well.

His first-round talent is why teams keep taking chances on him. His UFA hands are why he keeps getting traded/cut.

There's a reason Redskins fans called him Fifty-Fifty. Any pass thrown his way has about them odds of being caught...

Looks pretty good to me had a huge drop off on a new team with one start ...had his most productive season under Steve Spurrier in 02 and the next best was under Schottenheimer in 01...averaged better than 10 yards per catch last year on only 13 receptions

WR Rod Gardner (UFA)
2005 stats: four catches for 67 yards, 16.8 receiving avg., zero touchdowns

The skinny: Claimed on waivers on Dec. 20, Gardner proved to be a quick study. Five days later he played more than 20 snaps against the Chicago Bears. Gardner will not dazzle anyone with his speed, but the 2001 first-round draft pick has the perfect size and frame for the West Coast offense. In his two games with the team, the 6-2, 215-pounder showed an ability to box out his defender and churn out yards after the catch.

Burning question: Gardner showed flashes, but did he show enough in just two games to merit a contract on a team that already has Javon Walker and Donald Driver at wide receiver?
