Nick Athan has nothing at all if he is hiring little know nothings like you for managements positions. My opinion of WPI just dropped another two notches. To me, the fact that WPI is willing to let "anyone" be a writer if they have the skills is somewhat refreshing. Today's media is often stale and filled with people with hidden agendas, often involved in more politics than news. The internet, specificically blogs and independent news sites like WPI, is empowering ANYONE to write quality news without having to deal with the politics.

I'm not saying that every article from WPI is quality - in fact there are many that aren't. However, it's nice to get articles that are truly written from the FAN'S perspective. That's what WPI provides, and I don't see it as a bad thing. Are they up to the standards of, say, the Star? Probably not. But I'm more interested in the content of the article than the way it's written.

For the record, I'm not necessarily trying to promote WPI here - just defending the practice of allowing the "everyman" to express his opinion.

The average fan perspective is kind of a neat gimmick, but there is also a reason why people major in journalism at universities. I guess this isn't a newspaper, and amateurish stuff is not something you would be surprised to see. But still, there is a wealth of Chiefs coverage out there between national sports publications and media, and local outlets like the star, most of which is free.

I do admire them for trying to shed the Athan/profootballtalk tabloid style and become more credible.

There are differences between amateur sports fans and people who are professional journalists with members of a major news organization, that is what I'm saying.

Besides the things you mention about being able to write a professional article, I don't think someone who writes from their couch several states away after watching a game on TV just like I did, with quotes lifted from other sources, has any more special insight than I do. That kind of thing is for forums like this. A beat reporter who has met the coaches and speaks with them through the year, goes to practice, has some kind of rapport with players, actually gets to ask them his own questions, travels with the team on road trips, speaks with people both on and off the record, has access to colleagues, etc. In any other business we would ascribe more expertise to professionals than average joes, I don't see why journalism is much different.

I read the articles when they are posted here. I don't feel like the same quality exists between a media outlet and popupadfootball.com or whatever. A source has to have credibility like in any other area. If someone is a professional you can give that. If someone is basically just some dude, then so what? JMO... 'course

I would have to disagree. The only time we get anything with more insight or any other than the standard We gave a 110 percent the other team is great, Praise jesus for letting me catch that touchdown, is when someone from the media just asks dumb questions over and over then we get a blowup and somewhere in the blowups are a nugget of what they really feel.

I'm just saying that 95% of the articles that are written by sports reporters are something that could just easily be found on a BB, and days earlier. It is only seldom do they come out with real breaking news.

Don't get me wrong, I would love more actual beat type reporters, but the pro's have come up pretty short when it comes to getting us much from the inside.

It's not exactly like that. We frequently provide our writers with exclusive interviews retrieved by our beat guys and analysts. In addition, our Warpaint guys are frequently credited with asking technical football questions. So, whether you like Warpaint, visit the site, or subscribe to the magazine you're benefiting from what we do by virtue of our contributions to press conferences.

I'm as amateurish as anybody else, but I make a concerted effort to bring 4 fresh points to the table every Tuesday. In fact, I specifically wait until Tuesday to release my column so I can ensure I'm not writing the same thing as the real journalists.

Just because you do a decent job at grammer doesn't mean all of the writers do.

Actually, they all do, because I edit everything.

If that's the case, then why didn't you edit the Pastor's post, which misspelled "grammar".

Then you have your work cut out for you with some of the ones who's articles I had read before you started helping.

Seriously, I remember reading some of GoChiefs' work back when he was covering a girl's softball league for a fish wrap he used to work for. l couldn't believe someone who acted like he did on the Planet at that time would do such a good job writing. A year or so back I noticed he had quit writing. I'm glad he's decided to pick it back up because he does have a talent for it.

GoChiefs, have you ever considered sending some of your articles into the newspapers as a free-lance writer?

No. I'm not good enough as a straight-up columnist.

Maybe not the KC Star yet, but you are good enough to send articles in to the ones in smaller markets as well as some of the lesser papers in the metro areas.
