You don't have to buy all of your music through iTunes if that is what you are asking.

iTunes is used to sync your music on your pc with your ipod

But you have to have ITunes to transfer music to your Ipod.

is it easier with, say, a Samsung MP3 player, as opposed to an ipod?

There are some open-source apps that will work with iPods, but to my knowledge they're all Linux-only.

Yeah, Linux or Schroeder but Snoopy works too. Personally, I'd just stick with the moonrock needle and an inverse tachyon beam but that's just me.

I have an iPOD with about 900 songs on it. I have never had to buy a song from itunes.

I use limewire and have ripped CD's onto it.

Nobody has to buy music from iTunes. You can load songs from CDs into iTunes. I have around 600 songs in my iPod, and I've only bought a couple dozen from the iTunes music store.

If you have a CD you want to put on your ipod you can use windows media player to rip the songs.

Media Monkey has IPOD transfer capability. I use it for my Zen. It's good for categorizing, DJ, autoplaylists, etc.

I do wish Windows media player would track your licenses online rather than having to download them. I don't care for Itunes but that is the one feature I like about it.

Itunes will do it too.

I actually find that not having an iPod is a really annoying since you can't use iTunes to transfer music. I really like my creative labs player but not being able to use iTunes is a huge downside.

You can use Media Player, and there's even a plugin for winamp.

I didn't really like iTunes when I first downloaded it for buying music, but I've been impressed with it since getting my iPod. I converted over 200 mp3s to a smaller size the other night in about 45 minutes, and uploaded 650 songs in under 20 minutes last night.

For buying music: No

For organizing your music and loading it on your ipod: Why would you want to use anything else?
