I'm looking at renting a different apartment, as you may know, and some that I've looked at include wireless internet. What will be required for me to run that? Some type of antenna? And how much would a reasonable thingamajig cost me?

If your computer is not wireless ready, assuming not, all you need to do is purchase a wireless PCI card to install inside your computer. That will give you the best reception. Linksys would be your best bet.

You can also use an adaptor that plugs into a USB port. Then you don't have to open your PC, if that makes you nervous.

Mine looks like this. The silvery cable makes it easier to plug in to an out-of-the-way USB port that you wouldn't otherwise use, like on the back of your PC. You can also plug the thing right into a USB port without the cable. It's about the size of one of those little portable flash drives.

The adapters work too but they tend to take longer to connect to a signal than a PCI card does.

I didn't know that. My connection is always active by the time Windoze is finished booting up. I was thinking if someone is nervous about opening up their PC it's a decent alternative.

Most definitely. Nothing wrong with them at all if you don't want to break open the computer.

The only time I opened a computer was when I was working onsite in Memphis. I had one of our techs in Nixa on the phone telling me step by step what to do and explaining what everything looked like. Opening a pc would definitely make me nervous. A friend of mine called and said she found an adapter for about $47.

You can buy them just about anywhere that sells computers usually. If you're looking for the exact model that listopencil is using, check out Staples. This week they have that model for free (no rebates involved) when you also buy a wireless router for $39!

You probably won't need the router if your apartment provides the service, but that's a good price anyway and you can throw it in a closet in case you're ever someplace that doesn't provide wireless.

Here are some USB wireless adaptors. Probably much cheaper than anything you could buy locally. Just read the reviews and you should be able to find something good.
