........ where is the three quarters back? Was there ever a position called the 3/4 back?

1/4, 2/4, ___, 4/4??

Fullback are slowly being phased out of the NFL, leaving us with only the quarterback and the halfback. So, that makes me think that there might have been a three quarters back at one time. Maybe they called it something else?

This sounds like I'm joking, but I'm not. I'm serious. I'm talking about a position that may have existed way back in the 1920's or earlier.

"The term quarterback has its origin in Scottish rugby, wherein backfield players, according to their customary distance behind the forwards, were designated "quarter back" (i.e. ¼ of the way back), "half back", and "full back". Eventually in rugby the English-Irish nomenclature prevailed, with halfback, three-quarters back, and fullback; in some places, notably New Zealand, the term "five-eighths back" is used as well."

It actually makes sense not to have the 3/4 back, when you think of the pattern as in doubling, rather than in quarters.

Yes, this is all I could find so far. It doesn't answer my question about the NFL though. Also, who would be our 5/8's back, Kris Wilson? :p

I think the Chiefs should start a three-quarters back position. Trent Green 1/4, Michael Bennet 1/2, Larry Johnson 3/4 , Kris Wilson 4/4.

That's what I was thinking, it makes perfect sense as a numerical progression.

There used to be, in the Walter Camp days, a position called snapperback, but it was renamed... guess what it's currently called.

That would work 65% of the time all of the time. :)

how come the 4/4 lines up behind the 1/4 and the 2/4 behind the 4/4Even as a child, I could never figure out, why the full back wasn't fully all the way back. The guy behind him was called the half back, made no sense at all. Of course, in the "full house" backfield we would have a tailback. Of course this distinction can easily be explained due to the fact that this playa usually bagged the most tail.

In the pre-modern offenses, the halfback lined up in front of the fullback.

When Marv Levy was the KC coach he installed the Wing T offense with 3 backs and 1 WR.

No kidding.

The third back lined two steps back and outside the LT. He was called the Wing back

Now, THAT would be a good candiate for a 3/4 back.

Well how come Larry Johnson is also a running back but Trent Green isn't a throwing back?

And is a quarterback still a quarterback when they line up in the shotgun?
