Pitching matchup (http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_probable_pitchers.jsp?c_id=stl)
DET: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (1-0, 3.00 in postseason)
Bonderman (1-0, 3.08 ERA postseason; 14-8, 4.08 regular season) has pitched two strong outings so far this postseason to clinch the Tigers' last two series, but both outings came in Detroit. This will be his first playoff start on the road, but he was actually stronger away from Comerica Park during the regular season. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts against the Cards at home in June, part of his early-summer roll of 10 consecutive starts without a loss.

STL: RHP Jeff Suppan (1-1, 1.86 in postseason)
Suppan (1-1, 1.86 ERA postseason; 12-7, 4.12 regular season) has taken big assignment after big assignment over the past three years for the Cardinals, so this World Series start shouldn't be too big a leap for the steady right-hander. He's coming off two exceptional performances in the NLCS, pitching the Cards to wins in Games 3 and 7. Suppan battled through five innings against the Tigers in June, allowing three runs on nine hits and receiving a no-decision.
Tiger to watch: Rodriguez
What? The guy who is 0-for-11 in the World Series and in an overall 0-for-22 postseason drought, one of the longest of his career? All true, but Pudge has hit .500 in the past against Suppan (though in only 12 at-bats), and the confidence borne of that track record will get him going. Also, if he is affected by one of the moves being contemplated by Leyland, we'll still go with the Detroit catcher; Vance Wilson could write another chapter in the book of dark horse Fall Classic heroes.
Cardinal to watch: David Eckstein
Quietly, he has been getting over his bumps and bruises, and looked to have more pep Tuesday night than he had in a long time. He is ready to not only help, but control a game with his swing and his legs.

Detroit enters Wednesday night's Game 4 with a club average of .185 in three Fall Classic games, in which they have scored a total of five runs.

This time, they will be confronted by Jeff Suppan, the Cardinals right-hander who has surrendered a total of four runs in his three starts this postseason. Suppan will be opposed by Jeremy Bonderman.

"If we don't swing the bats better, they'll go up, 3-1," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "That's as simple as it is. "But at the same time, I think we will swing the bats better. We're certainly not conceding anything."

The Tigers didn't conceive anything, either, against Chris Carpenter in Tuesday night's Game 3. They moved only one man as far as third base, and it took Brandon Inge a wild pitch, on one of only 27 balls thrown by Carpenter in eight innings, to get there.

Detroit's lineup remained full of holes. Curtis Granderson (.333 in the ALCS), Placido Polanco (.529) and Ivan Rodriguez all remained hitless for the Series; the trio is a collective 0-for-34. Not surprisingly, Leyland is contemplating shaking up his lineup for Game 4.

And most importantly BRC and his son are going to be at the game in the house that Pujols built. Ain't no way karma is going to do me wrong.

Here's how bad it's been for the Tigers in this series: Leadoff hitter Curtis Granderson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7455) is hitless in 13 at-bats. No. 3 hitter Placido Polanco (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6049) is 0-for-10. Factor in Rodriguez's nonexistent contribution, and three of Detroit's main hitters have yet to reach base in 34 trips to the plate against St. Louis.

The Cardinals lead the Series two games to one even though they're hitting .196 as a team. That's because the Tigers have scored a total of five runs and are batting .185 as a team. This must remind Leyland a little bit of his first season with Pittsburgh in 1986, when he was running Joe Orsulak, Jim Morrison and Sid Bream out there on a regular basis, with a little Sammy Khalifa and Trench Davis on the side.

Realistically, Leyland's options are limited. Does he replace the free-swinging Granderson at leadoff with the free-swinging Polanco? Does he move Rodriguez up in the order so he'll get better pitches to hit? Detroit's bench consists of Alexis Gomez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6949), Marcus Thames (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6943), Neifi Perez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5702), Ramon Santiago (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6933) and Omar Infante (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7016), so there don't appear to be any magic solutions there. "I'm going to sleep on it," Leyland said. "I don't know what it's going to look like and I'm certainly not going to talk about it."

The Tigers ranked 28th in the major leagues in walks this year and 24th in on-base percentage, so they're not conditioned to play small ball and manufacture runs when they're out of sync offensively. And right now they're a lineup that's begging to be exploited.

"The [Cardinals] have seen what we do well and what we've done badly and they're exploiting it. ... They know each person's weaknesses, and they're going right after it." -- Tigers CF Curtis Granderson

The first time through the Detroit order, Carpenter pumped mostly first-pitch fastballs for strikes. Then he gradually found the touch on his breaking ball and continued to toy with the Tigers. He needed only 82 pitches to log eight innings of work. "The frustrating thing is, he never really falls into patterns," said first baseman Sean Casey (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5930), who had two of Detroit's three hits. "In different at-bats he'll start you out with curveballs, cutters, sinkers or changeups, so you can't have that great game plan when you go up there."

Some of the credit no doubt goes to the St. Louis advance scouts who followed Detroit throughout its playoff wins over the Yankees and Athletics. The Tigers found a way to work deep into counts against the likes of Barry Zito (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6394) and Rich Harden (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7180), but they've been going down quickly against the Cardinals.

The scary part is, the hottest St. Louis pitcher has yet to appear in this series. That's Jeff Suppan (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5454), who will take the mound against Jeremy Bonderman (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7106) in Game 4 Wednesday night. Pudge Rodriguez and his Detroit teammates have promised to show up for the game. Whether they'll bring their bats is another question

They said the weather is supposed to be worse tonight..WTF??

What is the latest forecast??

Does anybody know??ESPN, MLB.com and stcardinals.com all have stories on them that say they are going to try to get the game in. Starting about 10:00 pm central until about 4:00 pm tommorrow St. Louis is suppose to get 2 - 2 1/2 inches of rain. Tonight is just suppose to be drizzle but 10 degrees warmer

http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061026&content_id=1723999&vkey=news_stl&fext=.jsp&c_id=stl

"That's our line of thinking, too, like [Wednesday] night but less wet -- I'm giving it better than even odds they'll get the game in," said Matt Chambers, meteorologist at CBS affiliate KMOV-TV. "We'll have serious rain in the morning and midday [Friday], but probably pushing to the Illinois side by 4 p.m. That new stadium can take an impressive amount of water. I feel good about [Friday] and OK about tonight."

You just ain't a whistling dixie. To get a ticket at face value and then have it possibly be a Go Cazy Folks moment in history with my son there too .......holy shit.

But Suppan has to keep those Detroit bats in a deep slumber tonight and we will worry about tommorrow, tomorrow

My buddy HAD tickets for game 5 which means he sees game 4 tonite not happy.

It was told to us at the game by a Cards employee that they guessestimated that 35-40% of the Card fans were from outside of the St. Louis area.I spent most of the rain delay talking to Card fans from Laguna Beach and Phoneix.
They decided to not inconvience the crowd for tonights game to come on Friday. I bet 90% would rather been inconvienced but do I care....ROFL. No way jose, they play tonight I have last game tickets at Busch. Sweet.

10-26-2006, 04:49 PM
With apologies to those who have tickets, the best scenario for us is rain-outs tonight and tomorrow. Then we can send Suppan in Game 4 on Saturday and (IF we win Game 4) Carpenter in Game 5 on Sunday to finish them off. Not exactly fair to the Tigers, but I'm sure I don't give a shit.

I agree with Fraz's assessment. I will also add:

The ratings downturn is also a result of the media's constant hyping of everything New York or LA. If it's not a team from one of those places, nobody gives a f*ck because they think those are the only teams that matter.

Bonderman was used up at the time. That would have been the best time for Wilson to get to him. I figured they'd put in a fresh arm after the out, and they did, with expected results.
