View Full Version : Do you guys really want Dick Vermeil???

01-09-2001, 04:16 PM
Gunter is gone and we are all very happy. I commend Carl for that move. Replacing him will be a 64 year old head coach who was either burned out or wasnt wanted by the Rams. He is a buddy of Carl Peterson which only means he wont complain about the lack of talent Carl has put together on this team. He will probably cost a #1 draft pick and he will undoubtedly be fired, retired, or run out of town in three years. Winning a super bowl is a loooooong shot because of lack of talent, cap problem, and loss of this years #1 pick. Plus Carl Peterson remains the GM which doesnt help.

I say forget Vermeil and find someone else. Only this time, look for a younger, detail oriented, innovative assistant that was mentored by the NFL brightest. A guy who has been mentored by Holmgren, Shanahan, Dennis Green (yes, Dennis Green), or Jeff Fisher. The Chiefs have missed opportunity after opportunity to a Jon Gruden, Andy Reid, Steve Marriucci, Brian Billick ect.

Dick Vermeil, IMO, is another of a long list of bandaids that Carl has used to bandage open wounds in this organization. He continues to worry about turnstyles first and building a quality team the right way second.

I completely agree.

I don't want Vermiel even if there is no compensation required.

01-09-2001, 04:29 PM
Vermeil is such a huge upgrade over Gunther, he will seem like Bill Walsh by comparison.

01-09-2001, 04:30 PM
While Vermeil is by no means my first choice, he is head and shoulders above Gunther. He at least knows how to be a head coach.

Bob Stoops

I don't want Vermeil or Sanders.

My first choice was Butch Davis from Miami or Stoops from Oklahoma.I am not really sold on Tobin as our DC.I applaud Peterson for canning Gunther but hate him for bringing in another one of his "foot shuffling porters".

01-09-2001, 04:46 PM

Can you do me a favor and hook me up with that middle finger gif...
I've got some Raven fans I want to say hello to....

Oh... Jack del Rio would be a good choice.... He fits into the Haslett/Gruden mold.

01-09-2001, 04:51 PM
Drastic changes were needed. Although Vermiel wasn't anyone's 1st choice, it brings in a proven winner with head coaching experience.
At this point, we probably couldn't have lured Davis or Stoopes(My 1st 2 choices as well), but I was intrigued with the idea of Rick Neuheisal. His team looked outstanding in the Rose Bowl, he's young & innovative.

Tobin is a putz, AND he prefers a zone-blitz scheme.

He'll put our 6'-1", 210 LB. corners in zone coverage, AND send 295 LB. Eric Hicks into pass coverage. Hell, I hate him already.

Saunders is also a poor choice, IMO. He isn't responsible for anything the Rams have done offensively, and if he's so freaking brilliant, why didn't the Chiefs retain his services in the first place?

Vermiel reminds me of an incredibly lucky Gunther Cunningham.

We could have lured Butch Davis from Miami. He was making chump change compare to other college coaches. Offer him enough cheese and we could have had him in KC. He brings the NFL experience from Dallas and he can motivate his players. The Canes were always ready to play. Too late now. He signed five year deal recently.(not sure about the money).

Just say NO to Vermeil and Sanders!Bring somebody young and creative!

Yes. The only people happy about DV return to coaching are Cleenex companies. They will be bringing in some serious money if he is hired.

Take your pick jq...

01-09-2001, 05:01 PM
Bob Stoop would definately be my 1st choice.

Ken, just when you find a topic that most here would agree with you on - you have to keep on with your normal babble about how Carl sucks and there is no talent, ect. Wow, that is really old stuff. Simply said - Carl is here and this team is more talented than you would like to see. Gunther and his crew sucked dong after two years. If DV comes here it will be an improvment because he will hire good coaches. I believe that the assistants were a great deal of the problem and DV will fix that.

Vermeil is an upgrade from Gun, but he wouldn't be on my top 10 list of possible HC for the Chiefs.
My 1st choice has been Marvin Lewis, with Del Rio coming along as DC.

Vermiel wouldn't be my first choice, but I do think he's a good choice. I don't think any of the top college HCs (ie Stoops) could be lured here. Most of those guys can pick and choose their opportunites, and would likely wait for a total control-type situation to come along. KC, at their current cap state, is not really the golden carrot opportunity that these guys are looking for.

I'd like to get a great coordinator to come in here (Lewis, Morhinweg, etc.) but it's not like any of them are any safer a gamble than Vermiel. Vermiel is probably the safest choice right now. He is well liked by coaches and players, and I think we could attract more quality people to KC because of him.

If we hire a coordinator, he could be the next Gruden or he could be the next Gunther. I really doubt we have any chance at Stoops or Davis. Vermiel is a proven commodity. We know what we're getting, good points and bad. While it might not be the best choice, it certainly isn't a bad one.

01-10-2001, 12:41 AM
And I know Vermiel isn't a very popular choice here, but try to at least hide your bias with some objectivity.

Replacing him will be a 64 year old head coach who was either burned out or wasnt wanted by the Rams.

Vermiel left because he "wanted to go out on top". Not because he was burned out, and not because he was fired. Maybe you're so narrow in your thinking that you couldn't see more than the two scenarios, but you should try to expand your thinking. Especially when there's written documents that contradict your theories.

He is a buddy of Carl Peterson which only means he wont complain about the lack of talent Carl has put together on this team.

Here's the token shot at Carl. We had enough talent to beat Denver and St Louis, two teams who's talent levels I doubt you'd be mocking. And to say Vermiel would accept the aquisition of poor talent is ridiculous. I'm sure your friends would just sit back and take it if you were hurting their ability to do their job. Right! He's his friend. I see that as a positive. Carl would respect his friend's opinions more than a stranger's.

He will probably cost a #1 draft pick and he will undoubtedly be fired, retired, or run out of town in three years.

Probably cost a draft pick? Why don't we knock the Chiefs for something that MAY happen. I don't think he'll cost a first, and if he does I would be against it. I don't think Carl would give up a first for him either.

Back to the subject of the thread...

Do I want Vermeil? dunno, but he does come with some good qualifications. The one, in fact, that Ken uses to measure all players and coaches - the Superbowl. He has taken now 2 teams to the Superbowl and that alone makes him demonstrably better than Gunther.

Second, you mention that Vermeil is a good friend yet will be another yes man and mentioning that he will accept the 'poor talent' acquisitions. This really is an odd statement because they contradict one another. Friends, or more to the point, good friends can be more candid with one another, dont think for a minute that Vermeil wont have anything to say about who KC drafts/trades for. It's silly to say otherwise. Along those lines, it was Vermeil who got Faulk and Warner into St. Louis.

Next, it has been speculated that Vermeil would only be around 2-3 years and then let one of his assistants take over. So your comment about him leaving in 3 years is a self fulfilling prophecy because that's pretty much whats been stated in most reports about Vermeil and KC.

Bottom line is that there is really nothing CP can do to please you, Packfan, with the exception of leaving KC. So it really doesnt suprise me that you dont like this choice.

You can look at it this way, at least you'll be enjoying the seasons to come as KC fails and suffers more cap and talent issues--reveling in the failures.

There are so many factors and no simple equations for success in the NFL. Some of the primary tasks of a head coach in no particular order:

1) motivate players for every game
2) sell the players on your philosophy and ideas
3) bring players together to work as a cohesive team
4) evaluate talent
5) make cuthroat decisions about who should be on the roster and on the field
6) attract and keep the best assistant coaches
7) attract and keep the best free agents
8) master of the X's and O's who can either sign off on or vote down the assistants' game plans

Please feel free to add more!

I firmly believe that the pro game is quite different from the college game and success at one level is no guarantee of continued success at the other. Vermeil is not my top choice, but he can meet most of these requirements. You don't go to Superbowls unless a team buys their coaches game plan and he brings them together. He admitted overestimating the talent when he got to St. Louis because he'd been away so long and everyone was bigger and faster. He was a guru of the X's and O's in his early career and I believe he kept up at it as an analyst. He has league wide respect and admiration from coaches and players. He'll be a good coach.

I don't want Vermeil at any price. I'm not even sure I wanna give up any draft picks. I look at this as a great publicity stunt to save Carl's job and keep the fans coming back to the stadium for a few more years. All without having to spend cap money for "real" players - like a running back who can really run...

As I said in the past, I'm just glad to see change at this point. My biggest worry with Vermeil is that he'll come in and try to change the Chiefs into the Rams. I love the Chiefs because of the attacking defense, crushing QBs and a smash-mouth running game.

I think we could win without a drastic change in philosophy.
