THIS WEEK IN CHIEFS HISTORY

Oct. 26, 1997

KANSAS CITY 28, ST. LOUIS 20

KC defense stops Rams

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The Kansas City Chiefs established home-field advantage on the other side of the state.

Bolstered by busloads of red-clad, noisy fans and four field goals from Pete Stoyanovich, the Chiefs beat error-prone St. Louis 28-20 Sunday in the first regular-season meeting between the teams since the Rams moved from Anaheim, Calif., in 1995.

Elvis Grbac improved to 3-0 as a starter against the Rams (2-6) with a turnover-free game, and the Chiefs (6-2) converted three lost fumbles and an interception into 14 points.

Grbac, whose first two wins over the Rams came when he was with the San Francisco 49ers, threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Lake Dawson and completed a pair of 2-point conversion passes.

Stoyanovich connected from 25, 52, 41 and 39 yards for his seventh career four-field goal game. Marcus Allen added his 117th career touchdown, extending his NFL record on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to make it 28-14, and the Chiefs ran out the final 5:07 after Jeff Wilkins' field goal cut the gap to eight.

It was odd to hear cheers of "Defense!" when the Rams had the ball during the game, which drew a sellout crowd of 64,864. That's second-best at the 3-year-old Trans World Dome behind attendance of 64,598 for the dome opener in 1995 against Carolina.

Rams defensive end Leslie O'Neal had four sacks in the first half to equal his career best. A fifth sack, which would have tied the team record, was negated by a defensive holding call that set up Allen's touchdown.

The Rams beat Kansas City 14-13 in the Governor's Cup preseason game in August in St. Louis, a result that Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas referred to as "fun and games." Sunday's loss was the Rams' fourth in a row.

Grbac was 20-for-37 for 204 yards and a touchdown. In six career appearances against the Rams, he's 62-for-105 for 675 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Helped by a game plan that featured quick drops and rollouts, Rams second-year quarterback Tony Banks had one of his better statistical games, going 18-for-30 for 268 yards and a touchdown. But Banks also fumbled twice, setting up 11 Chiefs points on a field goal, touchdown and 2-point conversion.

St. Louis fumbled twice in its first six plays, one by Banks after a scramble on the second play and the second by Lawrence Phillips at the Kansas City 15 to squander a scoring opportunity.

The Rams ended a 10-quarter offensive touchdown drought when Isaac Bruce caught a 12-yard pass from Banks with 4:59 left in the first quarter. The Rams also got a 1-yard scoring run from Phillips in the second quarter.

Bruce caught five passes for 94 yards, all in the first half, and his first touchdown of the season. He spent much of the second half on the sidelines battling leg cramps.

Stoyanovich hit his first three field goals in the first half. The 42-yarder was set up by an interception on Rams backup quarterback Mark Rypien's first play of the season. Rypien came in after Banks was shaken up and on a second-and-27 was intercepted by James Hasty on a poorly-thrown ball.
