Exciting stuff! Anyone thinking about camping out to get one? I've read that Sony cut their shipment for N. America to about 150k - 200k. No one's camping around here yet, but I expect lines to be full by tommorrow afternoon. I'm gonna try to get in line around 2 pm - 4 pm, depending on how long they are. Still gotta make up my mind between BB or CC. (anyone ever camp out for anything?)

Supposedly Sony promised another launch before Christmas ~ Dec. 15 or so.

That's what I was thinking...something must've went wrong that we won't know about. I don't see how they could make their launch so small.

Theres no question that i will be getting one, but i intend to wait thru the first couple of runs so they can iron out the glitches that any new system has. PS2 was the same way. Also they should be a lil' cheaper by the time i buy.

Guys you're missing the bigger picture here - of course it's smart to wait and see it works properly, but who cares if you sell it and make an extra $1000 or more!?! That's like 2 weeks of work.

People were emailing me links on the Xbox 360 of ebay auctions going for thousands over retail. I will never believe that those were authentic. It was the seller themselves bidding the price up with multiple usernames, or having his buddy top whatever bid was out there to drive the price up. I've heard people discussing auction strategies like this many times. I wonder what fraction of those auctions ever recieved payment and shipped what was promised.

Sure, there is a small percentage of people who will pay $5000 for something that retails for $500, but come on. There are not 200,000 people in the United States doing that.

A little known secret is that both Sam's Club and Costco will each have some of these in stock and won't open early. Not sure how many per club though. Some may have a ton and some may have none. The doors open at 10am and I am guessing that there won't be a line. I know where I am going...

Vista's coming out soon too. I'm sure not ready to buy it either. I usually wait a couple of month's after a release. I've programmed a few projects, I know how that flow chart runs.

Release - discover bugs - release patch - release patch to fix bugs in previous patch - etc etc etc.

There are also plenty of people that have expensive gym memberships that probably go once every 2 weeks and feel they got ripped off.....it's just what's important to you.

But even me a hardcore game type person feels 600 bucks is to much when the competition is lower...You could buy a WII and 360 for the cost of a PS3.

The latest estimate I heard was that Sony will lose +/-$250 on each PS3 sold and the addition of the Blu-ray spec is the major cause for that. The blu-ray spec allows for the game titles to include incredible features and content so they considered it necessary- cost be damned.

I just left a meeting today where we had the chance to tinker around with the PS3. Played some off road racing game- Motorstorm maybe?. Pretty unbelievable...

We ware playing the demo on Sony 46" 1080P LCDTV. Graphically, it was outstanding/unbelievable, although I only have the PS2 to compare it to. I've never seen an XBOX 360 on a display like that either Details, lifelike movements and expressions, etc. The wireless controller had a great feel to it with no lag like you have with the current aftermarket controllers. It felt faster too. It's not scientific but it felt at least 30% faster than the PS2 on loading, etc. I'm getting one for the Blu-ray spec alone.

I understand the frustration with the price. Sony priced it as low as they could so they make money on it in 2-3 years.

It has to change in by 2009. The big boys in DC have mandated it. Hell you can't even ship a product with an NTSC(analog) tuner only after 2/28/2007. It must have an ATSC (digtial/HDTV) to be able to put an NTSC tuner in it as well. Very, very strict manufacturing guidelines.

I'm on my second HDTV and ready to buy a 3rd. I'm just never satisfied I guess. After today, I am definitely going the flat panel route...

360 won't have Grand Theft Auto IV either.

When Grand Theft Auto IV was announced for the Xbox 360 at E3 2006, gamers weren't too surprised. What was surprising, however, was the fact that the game was going to get some downloadable content for the game and that Sony's timed-exclusives on the game were history.

At Microsoft's X06 event currently taking place in Barcelona, Spain, Microsoft's corporate vice president of marketing Peter Moore gave gamers the latest on what's in store for the game on Xbox Live Marketplace. He announced that Rockstar Games is working on two downloadable packs for the game--to be made available within months of the game's release.

"We're not talking about an extra car or character here," Moore said when describing the "epic" episodic packs. He then joked about Rockstar keeping even him in the dark about the content packs, but emphasized that the packs would be lengthy.

A press release issued during the conference said only that the packs would add "hours of entirely new gameplay" to GTA4. No additional details on the downloadable packs were released, but industry sources have said they will be along the lines of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories in terms of length.

15 or so.

Several years ago when the PS2 first came out I camped outside of BB for several hours and was like the 10th person in line. That didn't matter though because before the doors opened at 6:00 AM BB ended up doing a lottery and everyone in line ended up having to draw a number for their position in line. I ended up picking a good number and went home that day with a new PS2. I am not sure if BB is still doing the lottery thing it may not hurt to give them a call to find out. Good Luck!

I can't really argue with you. Maybe things will be different this time around. Nintendo was willing to make Zelda more violent. I want to try the new controller. Most reviews have said it's better than the traditional controller. I'm eager to play on the Virtual Console. We're talking about a lot of good games over the years. It seems like there will always be something to play.

I don't think digital necessarily equates to high definition.

Good Luck!

I did that at Walmart in October of 2000 when the PS2 came out. Unfortunately, there were about 4-5 times as many people as there were PS2s for sale. I didn't get one that night. Finally ended up getting one about 6 months later.

I realize this, I was speaking in general, just to deliniate ATSC vs. NTSC. I guess the more appropriate terminology would have been High Definition versus Standard Definition.

Hey fellas, just got back from waiting in line. I was there from about 1 hour after the last time I posted on here (Wednsday around 4) and I just walked in my room. Waited at Target with 8 friends, and they had 8 sets (6 - 60 GB 2 - 20 GB). I got a 60 GB, a controller, Madden, Resitance, and Call Of Duty. 10% off the whole purchase for signing up for a Target Visa, and a $20 Gift Card for buying three games.

For all of the heat Microsoft took for the 360, you'd think Sony would have done whatever they could to not repeat Microsoft's mistake.

Instead, they announced yesterday that they don't expect to ship more than 1 million PS3's to the US before the end of the year.

That's hilarious. Yes, let's cut in half what we've already said would be a lower than usefull launch number of consoles to increase demand. It didn't really work out that way if you go by how many gamers are pissed off, and when Sony fails to ship a million before Christmas, they'll actually lose more customers to MS and Nintendo than they gained.

I agree. I think they took Microsoft's example and ran with it. In the end, it gave the XBOX 360 a commanding lead in the console war. Not that I think that lead will last forever.

Creating demand by limiting supply is a basic tactic of successful marketing- (see iPod, FJ Cruiser, Solstice, XBOX, Elmo, and on and on). If a everybody could get one right away, then the value of the product would be diminished. No more ebay for $7k!!! Not to mentoin all of the press this thing is getting. All of the fuss about $600 evaporated and now everyone is lamenting the fact that they don't have a chance to drop $600 on it. (Not anyone here of course.) Go figure...

Some will drop $600 on it and not think twice about it, myself included. For my money, I want a state-of-the-art console. The 360 is nice, but the PS3 delivers more bang for the buck.

Also, I fully agree about creating more demand. This is Sony's 3rd launch-I think they know what they are doing. I'm glad to see some positive vibes about the PS3 on the board.

Make it a 10 day auction and set the min starting bid for $850. You will have no problem getting to $2500 based on what I am seeing out there right now.

I saw a couple of idiots that are asking $6500 up front. Needless to say, no bids on theirs yet.

Check this out...found it on some forum.

"i went out wednesday afternoon to the local walmart to start camping out. when i got there, there were already 12 people ther so i got in line being number 13. i talked around and found out the first 6 people there had been there since monday, total hardcore nerds all planning to keep them. bragging about how only they should get the system since theyve been there the longest. how they are so dedicated and how if you dont want to do the time, you shouldnt get a system. generally being complete . good for them. we had a hours to pass so we became friends and played some cards and whatnot. the 6 guys in front kept to themselves and didnt associate with the rest of us. we were cool with each other leaving the line to get food, bathroom, smoke, etc since we all knew each other and as long as they were back in 30 minutes. i was about to leave to go buy some KFC for a good number of us and when i stepped out of line, one of the nerds shouted that if i left, i would lose my spot. the other guys told him that they were vouching for me and that i was just getting food but those 6 didnt care. they said i leave, i lose my spot and that was the rules and they would call the manager (they had his number) to come out and enforce it. i said whatever and stayed in line.

a few hours later, the manager came out and told everyone that there were only going to be SEVEN available. they have them in their store and theyre not getting anymore. he told the people after # 7 they should leave if they wanted to not waste their time. me being number 13 should have left but i didnt, i wanted to stick around for a little bit more. everyone else left except me and the 7 other people that were getting it for sure. so the day goes on and i try to make friends with the nerds. i play mario kart on the ds with them and talk to them about the games they were getting. about an hour or 2 later, i tell im gonnna head home since im 8 in line and theres only 7 ps3s. one of them made some stupid joke about if i leave the line then i aint getting back in!! har har. so as im about to leave, i tell them im going to the vons next door and if any of them wanted any food or coffee and id bring it back to them. one of them said yea and all the rest like sheep followed and said yes too. they were gonna give me money but i told them it was on me since theyve been out here since monday. the 7th guy in line wanted some food and coffee and i told him id buy some for him also.

so i go to vons and buy 8 coffees, some food, and some x-lax laxatives. i bring it to my car and put some laxatives in 6 of the coffees and seperate them from mine and #7s. i pull back to walmart and bring all the drinks and food upfront. i give #7 his stuff and then the coffees with laxatives to the 6 nerds annd wish them good luck and go back to my car. i park it around the corner so i can still see them.

about 30 minutes later, #2 and 3 in line get up and it seemed like they were yelling to the other nerds. they both ran into walmart. seconds later (i guess all nerds have the same biology) #5 gets up and runs across the parking lot and into the trees and bushes somewhere. #1 is scrounging for this portapotty type thing he'd brought with him but he is squirting everywhere and all over his pants and their sleeping bags. he runs into walmart. at this time, i start my car and drive back to the walmart to claim my spot in line. when i get there #4 and 6 are gone but i dont know where. #7 is laughing his off so hard and i just smile at him. i call up 5 of the other people that i had made friends with that were in line with me ( i had their phone numbers cause i was gonne buy to food for everyone) and told them to get back to the walmart ASAP and get in line. Meanwhile, me and #7 threw all their into the parking lot and i claimed my spot as #1, him as #2. 4 and the people i had called arrived and got in line just as 1 of the nerds came running back and got #7. he started yelling saying they need their spots back. we all told them to off, out of spot, out of line. it was all of us against him so he didnt say . the nerds came back and tried to start some but we just laughed, we told them it was their rule and to go themselves and clean the off their pants. the called security and security came. security man was like is that smell and looked at the nerds with all of them and kicked them off the grounds screaming LMAO. so that is how i got my ps3."

Bad Guy, i posted this last night in the other thread...but this is why I think Sony is making a miscalculation. Just like they did last year with the PSP movie discs.... :

Sony is trying to promote the "All in one entertainment system" but most people already have DVD players, a PC and are happy with that.

I really dont think HD DVD's will ever catch on with the mainstream crowd too much.

Over the past 5-6 years most people have spent hundreds/thousands building up a DVD collection. Its just not enough of a picture upgrade to convince the average joes to convert from regular DVD's. Its NOT near the leap that VHS to DVD was.

and in another 3 -4 years some brand new technology will be out.....

HD DVD's are going to end up a collectors medium the same way Betamax and Laserdisc ended up.

I would agree that it's gonna be tough to convince some people to upgrade to high-def DVD's as much as some people collect them.

That said, I think the jump to HD is far superior than going from VHS to DVD. Of course you have to have the TV and all to go with it, but in terms of quality it's far superior.

I think your wrong. First of all, DVD has only been around since 97 or so...in the mainstream since about 2000 or so.

VHS had been around almost 20 years before it had run its course.

DVD still has alot more useful life left. People just are not ready to make the switch yet, and by the time they will be ready, there will be some new technology. Who knows though, maybe it will hang around long enough for everyone to get upgraded to HD TV's.....

Have you seen high-definition TV? It's not even close. DVD is better quality than VHS because it's digital, but they're still both standard definition. HD-quality video blows both of them clear out of the water.
