great. is the article in the hopper or are we shit outta luck?

I stopped writing when Nick squashed a couple of my stories. But I enjoyed writing and am considering options for a blog or something. I haven't given it a tremendous amount of thought yet.

I appreciate the question. It tells me you enjoyed my work or at least liked to laugh at me. Thanks.

I don't think I'm just being a Warpaint stooge, here. It's improved. Rick Dean writes for us. Yeah, the same one that writes for the Capital Journal. Kendall Gammon has a column in the magazine.

I can honestly say I wish I didn't read everything in the magazine before it went to print, because it would be fun to read it all for the first time after it was delivered to my mailbox. I wish there was another Chiefs magazine out there that provided similar coverage.
Kendall Gammon!?

Hahahahahaha. That's rich.

What if I offered $20k and only paid him $500?

Was this promised as a lump sum? A backend payment based on a certain goal down the road? Or a yearly salary? Wouldn't the shit start to stink pretty early if your first check was 2.5% what it should have been?

Short Leash Hootie
12-20-2006, 01:04 PM
Well I hope you don't stop writing-I think you were improving with every article. People hate Athan because he is full of shit, arrogant, and only out to better his own standing as the "Voice of the Chiefs". Your stuff was down to earth-saying what the average fan that loves the Chiefs feels. You put it all out there from your heart, not just spew some story that has been redone over and over but with a spin to make it some brand new "scoop". Hang in there and welcome back!!! :)
that and he puts out three of the dumbest articles after every Chiefs game...not one, not two...three.

So what kind of stories were squashed, and for what reason?

The Passion Parties story Whitlock did was mine. The source was a guy who posted the "tip" on the website. I chased the story down for 3 days. It was a good story. My version was a whole lot more tame than Jason's version, fwiw.

Earlier in the year a Chiefs player lost a playbook. I had the story, source, pictures of the playbook. Nick wouldn't hear of it.

Phil,
Don't let them ruffle your feathers. They can talk all the shit they want but if they were offered $20k to pursue their dreams... They'd do the exact same thing.

Just so happens it didn't work out the way you've hoped for. On the flipside, you'll always have that opportunity to say that you'll never be questioning to yourself, "what if".

Let them have their so-called CP pride because after all, it's only a BB.

Lifes about chances... you win some & you lose some. BUT YOU TOOK THE CHANCE (which is more than the majority on this board has done at some point in their lifetime).

Considering what's happened with my cousin, son, father, & step father within the last 2 months... You quickly realize that healthy family & God are the only things that matter. The rest are extras comparable to the cherries on top.

To hell with them. I'd take you (The BB whore) over any of them anytime.

My compensation package was percentage based with incentives. During the recruiting period he told me his monthly nut was a lot bigger than it turned out to be. Nick always did a good job of convincing me that Scout owed him money and that I'd be paid later. I generally trust people. I believed him through September and then started to become more and more disgruntled. I wanted him to make it right. I thought he would. Obviously, he hasn't.

Sure I do. But when the "books" is a spreadsheet Athan threw together in an effort to appease my requests to see the books, what can I do?

That spreadsheet was the biggest joke I've ever seen. Initially I was requesting respectfully, then asking, and finally DEMANDING to see the books and after 4 months he sends me a spreadsheet he spent 20 minutes throwing together. All the monthly expenses were perfectly round numbers - $1200, $2400, etc. It's obvious he didn't want me to see the real books.

Well, I'm sure that you could seek legal recourse if you wanted to press him. That amount would take you above small claims, obviously. It would be interesting to see what he'd do when pushed, but I'm sure you've already thought of the ramifications of what would happen to others should you do this? Then again, you are entitled to your fair share, it was promised to you...it'd be nice to see you recoup at least some of that.

So Phil are you going to give us the scoop on the playbook story?

I'll try. I suspect Nick spooked the source so I never did get the entire story.

The weekend Huard injured his groin, a member posted a thread asking that somebody contact him immediately - he had HUGE news. I contacted him but he wanted to talk with the "Insider". So Nick contacted him. When I asked Nick about it on Sunday he said the kid thought he had a line on whether Huard was gonna play or not. That didn't make sense to me so I contacted the kid myself. He told me that a Chiefs player had left a playbook in a local hotel room and that his friend had it. His friend thought he could get something for it, like maybe a reward or something.... He gave me pictures of the book so we knew it was the real thing. When I confronted Nick about it he said he lied to me to because it had become a criminal matter and that the playbook had been stolen. He issued a "gag" order about the playbook and never said anything else about it.

Yep he is a shill. Publishing pure conjecture and fantasy doesn't hurt anybody but posting stories of people losing their playbooks would.

So Phil are you going to give us the scoop on the playbook story?

That more than anything exposes him as being a bumbling fool.

What is Athan thinking? Killing a negative story just to remain in the organization's favor? Threatened by someone who actually had a "scoop" instead of some made-up nugget of the week?

If the idiot would have ran it and let his publication take credit for breaking the story they could have gotten a priceless amount of publicity - and credibility, which is pretty effing hard to come by when you are Nick Athan. Instead he killed it to maintain a smiley face, I'm-ok-you're-ok, yay Chiefs party line? So much for integrity, to say nothing of business sense. I'd expect this out of the Chinese government or something, but it doesn't make sense for him on any level. Why would you turn down an opportunity like that? It could have helped his magazine turn the corner.

Why does he need to curry favor with the Chiefs' organization anyway? All he gets is bogus information, if anyone really gives him information at all. (doubtful)

While there is truth in this statement, the odds of him getting his foot in anywhere other than the blogosphere is very, very slim. Why? because there are going to be several other people with equal talent who have a piece of sheepskin that they can fall back on. I totally agree with you Cochise. It doesn't make any sense to me. The only thing that I can think of is that WPI is the only Internet site that has media credentials with the Chiefs and he doesn't want to lose that. On the bright side, the college experience does have a way of separating the wheat from the chaff. If someone can't make it to class twice a week, what are the odds that they are going to be a trustworthy or dependable employee?

I used to hold your exact thoughts, but teaching college students has actually morphed my feelings towards them somewhat. No one is going to do what they love *all* the time, but when some people show up and get their shit done on the less than palatable things, it reveals a great deal about their sticktuitiveness and drive. Although there are also definitely sheeple there who just do it because it is handed down from an authority figure (like me....scary), for the most part, it is a fairly productive sifting process.

Both of these stories would have been considered "inside Info." which is what we were supposed to be getting and yet they were squashed. This is starting to piss me off!!

You wanna know why?

Because the people that run the Chiefs try to keep everything out of the possible national spotlight, that's why.

If a story broke that a player lost the playbook, it would be big news and the Chiefs would look like dopes.

They care more about their organizational image than anything, which is BS.

The people that run the Chiefs would never, ever survive in a major market like LA, NY, Chicago because they'd be torn to bits every week and would have to put a smile on their face when dealing with the media.

Why else do you think Carl Peterson had a personal issue with Jason Whitlock? Why when I wrote that Tony Gonzalez was a dickbag because of an incident at training camp on a message board did NFL Security contact me about it?

It's because the Chiefs think they can get away with bullying everyone when they are a big fish in a small pond.

Well, Athan reported it to NFL Security and they started chasing the guy who found the book. Their position was that it said "Property of the Chiefs" on the front so the "perp" should have just returned it.

What a crock of shit.

NFL Security is a ****ing joke.

I remember reading something back in 04 ....... like this.

Some one went to Training Camp back in 04 and had a problem with Tony G because they he was being a prick and dyssing this guy and his kid. The guys kid wanted Tony G's autograph and he (TonyG) pretty much just walked off and didn't pay attention to this guy asking him politely but loudly that he wanted an autograph for his kid.

Was that YOU?......

.....Or just someone else that was slighted by Gonzalez?

"We're concerned why you would put this on a message board,"

"Why were you there, why did you have the right to have press access,"

"Why do you think you have the right to post something like that on the internet?"

"What type of experience do you have that you think you deserve to be at Training camp."

There was more, but it was almost 3 years ago. What truly sucked was that I was trying to get a job at NFL Films after my internship and magically, that fell through. I attribute that in large part to NFL Security likely calling them.

What sucked was that I was doing the gig just for experience and that the paper that sent me there, the Platte-County Landmark were called by NFL Security too and were involved. I had a good relationship with those dudes there, but after that, I haven't heard from them since.

Truth be told, after that incident, my love and passion for the Chiefs went down quite a bit.

RUFUS DAWES: The rule around here is you must offer evidence for what you write. High moral pronouncements of the importance of accountability are to be welcomed and, indeed, trumpeted, but then it would do wonders for your reputation if you actually were to be accountable for the comments you have made. Cubic zirconium kicks even the finest diamond's asses in all three for fat less money, yet a woman is all pissed off when you buy her the CZ. Why? Simple. I'm not willing to read through the last 30 or so pages so can someone answer this?

Has Athan responded here yet?
He will not respond here, He will get nailed over here. I think he's not that dumb.

I think you're unfairly labeling him as a negative writer. He's been saying good things all year, mostly about some of the younger players like Jarrad Page. He's in the locker room after almost every game, road games included. He was in San Diego last weekend.

Athan should pay US to read his '5 to bench' column...

It's ****ing DUMB.

If he doesn't include "Nick Athan" as his top 5 entries in this week's column there is no justice.

FWIW, a couple of weeks ago it was "4" to bench because he went into this rant about Terdell Sands and how he played for Kansas. We just whacked it and reduced it to four that week.

man you are ****ing stupid. Who gives a flying **** what someone posts on this board?! LMAO
I do you dumbf*ck! When every other post from the dude was pimping that site. Why don't you take a flying leap into a vat of acid and do the world a favor you waste of life! Keep your comments to yourself, I wasn't talking to you and yes this f*cking site has rules the last I checked.

GoChiefs was originally banned from Chiefsplanet for spamming the shit out of this board and I was one of the people that was affected by it. Why don't you spend a little more time on this board before you try and become king? F*ckhead! maybe you could go back and read some threads and maybe learn a thing or two. Or maybe you could just go play in the f*cking freeway!

I still find it funny he feels the need to write two or three columns every Sunday...as if one wasn't enough.

I'll come right out and say I know very little about WPI and it's goings on.

But I'm wondering how Nugent is going to road games and Phil gets paid $500?

I'm sure there's a logical explaination. Just curious.

He's their 'professional' guy, or something...

Like I said, every article I saw from GoChiefs or Phil was every bit as good as anything Nuge ever wrote. Nuge has no flavor.

I don't remember Terdell Sands at KU. Are you sure it wasn't "Touchdown" Tony Sands?

Uhh, I think that's why Athan had to cut out the Sands part of the article. He had factual errors in it. Instead of rewriting, he just cut it out and made it "four to bench." A little slow on the uptake tonight, eh Skippy? Half your body numb again?

They have different jobs. Nugent is in the locker room after most every game interviewing players, getting audio and writing post-game stories. Phobia was the message board administrator.

It was right after the Raiders game when Sands jumped offside a couple times. I can't imagine he'd get the Big Terd confused with a RB who played at KU 15 years ago - would he?

I've never sent a message to mod here ratting someone out, and if you actually read the posts before replying to them you would know I wasn't complaining about chiefs articles as a matter of fact it was everything but the articles. We don't need people here from other Chiefs board trying to lure members away from this board. Don't just skim over shit before you reply. Also this is none of your concern, I was throwing a warning at Gochiefs just that simple, if you don't like it then throw me on ignore.

I get that.

I was getting at the assumption (on my part) that WPI spends money to send Nugent to road games, but only paid Phil $500 this year.

Again, not a big deal. Really, it's not even any of my business. Like I said, just curious.
