Holy cow maud...I have been here (Colorado) for almost 20 years and never seen this much snow

DENVER (AP) - Governor Bill Owens is declaring a disaster emergency as a winter-like storm bears down on the eastern half of Colorado, saying he wants to free up additional resources to help cope with the weather.

The governor also opened the Emergency Operations Center and the Colorado National Guard Joint Operations Center, which will be manned 24 hours a day.

Owens is also activating the National Guard and putting guard members on standby to assist stranded motorists, but says he hopes it won't be necessary to endanger their lives as well.

The state stationed emergency vehicles, Humvees, snow cats and emergency response teams across the state before the storm hit.

Owens says a state trooper told him that Humvees are the only way to reach stranded motorists.

(Okay, no AK-47.)

Wow, that was a tough drive home, and my commute is only two miles. It didn't seem that bad downtown, but it's already halfway up my shins at home, and the drifts are deeper. I had about 18" piled up against my garage door, so I had to shovel it just to get the car in.

Its pretty nuts to see houses that are barely noticable other than about 2 feet before the roof starts.

That depends. This storm was what they call an 'upslope flow' storm. The moisture actually comes along and up the Front Range. As the air is forced higher in altitude, it literally squeezes the moisture out before it gets to the mountains, and dumps the snow along the Front Range. They are relatively rare, and most storms hit the mountains harder, but they do happen.

It's really going to suck when you have to start moving the furniture in.
Back around 1995, there were about 5 days in a row that the temperature never got any higher than 8 degrees below zero. I'm pretty sure that was the coldest 5 day stretch of the decade.
I was moving into a new house during that time. It was the most miserable move I ever made.

Yeah, it always seemed like the huge front range storms didn't dump a bunch of snow in the mountains. The huge mountain storms wouldn't hit the FR that hard, either. This one, though, seems to be nailing both. The Front Range seems to be getting the worst of it, though. I was there for the Spring 2003 storm. I need to pull those pics off my old laptop to upload. My wife and I used snowshoes to get around town for 3 days.

Yes, the 2003 storm was bad. The snow in that storm (March?) was very heavy. Thankfully, this snow is basically powder.

This really is a rare event.

Yeah, I understand that. As much as this sucks, I'm not holding it against the city or anything. If I were already moved in, I'd probably be glad for an excuse to stay home and relax!

I wish KC would get snow like this agian instead of the 2-3" is thick ice in a storm we get instead...

When you have to shovel your porch, driveway, and walkway half a dozen times and still get absolutely nowhere, you'll rethink your wish.

It's one thing to shovel once, but it's another thing to have to go outside and shovel every couple of hours just to keep up with the storm. Otherwise, if you don't, then you have to shovel two feet of snow at once and that's no easy task.

It took me and my future FIL around two hours to shovel their driveway and sidewalk this morning. I'm not entirely sure what we accomplished, though, since the streets are still buried under 2.5' of snow.

Heh. Just wait until you get your driveway totally cleared and the plows come by and erect a wall of hard packed icy snow between your cleared driveway and the street. Good times!

The deepest snow photos look like Truckee, CA for most of the winter. Or better yet, Serene Lakes, CA...it is freaky how much snow they get and they get no pub about it.

Just look for the guy laying on the sidewalk next to the frozen chunk of chicken soup.

Yep. There's no point in shoveling your sidewalk until the plows come through.

Did you notice that a few hours after the snow stopped that the sky was totally clear? That's the secret about Colorado: it's almost always a clear sky and above freezing the next day. You'll actually see sublimation on the roads tomorrow!

Well, I just got back from driving around town some. The things I noticed during my short trip. (And thank gawd I have a 4-wheel drive vehicle):

1. Lots of people walking around.

2. The grocery store parking lot was outnumbered with 4-wheel drive vehicles to standard vehicles 20-1.

3. There are quite a few people who had to abandon their cars and plows are coming by and making it worse for them.

4. The grocery store was gravely short on the following items: frozen pizzas, potato chips, eggs, and bread.

5. More cars were parked in front of the liquor store than were in front of the grocery store.

6. It's unimaginable how beautiful and arresting everything is when it's covered in so much snow and the sun has finally greeted us with some light.

I woke up sick this morning, so I'd've been lying in bed even if it had been a gorgeous day. I did drag myself out a little bit to help the wife do some shoveling, though. Here are a few pictures from central Denver.

This is our front walkway.

We got some sort of very large "snowsicle" hanging off of our porch. I kid you not, this thing was something like 5 feet deep and 2 1/2 feet wide, and hung down a couple of feet.

We ended up with about 23 inches in our yard, which is well short of the record of 32 inches back in 2003. I can't tell if anything is still coming down, so I doubt we'll get much more, if any.
