View Full Version : Santa gave me money for an iPod; I bought a Zune instead.

Let's see:

It has allows downloads of iTunes OR proprietary mP3s.

It has a bigger color screen than the 30 gig iPod.

It has an FM Tuner.

So I took the dive....anyone else bought a Zune?

I know they are "new;" but with Microsoft behind them....I suspect/hope that they've done their homework. :hmmm:

I've read that it's lame.

I'm familiar with iPods through my BIL; and played around with them, otherwise.

Like I said, so far....I'm seeing it as good as an iPod, without the limitations. Maybe I'll be wrong.

But I just downloaded every single music, video, and pic file I have on the hard drive of my PC to my Zune (a variety of formats and file types, and it reads, displays, and plays all of them)....and it's not even 1/3rd full yet.

I llliiiiiikkkkkkkeeeeee. So far anyway....

I'm not sure yet; but whatever I can download....that plays in WindowsMediaPlayer....is able to be exported to Zune. I think....:hmmm:

The only thing that doesn't seem to work, are the "subscription" services....like Rhapsody.....

I hadn't read much.

I had no intention of buying. Was "window shopping" the 30 gig iPod, with doubts...mostly not wanting to get locked into the iTunes thing.

Display said, "iTunes or mP3, FM tuner...." and has a larger color screen....I figured, WTF? It's only two nights of ENDelt's drinking money. ;)

I'm playing my ZUNE right now and I love it. I really like the design and find it easier to scroll. I prefer the 3" screen over ipods' 2.5". If you own an ipod, stick with it. If you don't own either, compare before you buy. ipod has a lot more to offer in accessories, but all of that will most likely change in the near future.

For a straight up music player, I'm partial to the iRivers. Cost less, better performance in my opinion, better functionality, support more formats. I'm not so interested in watching video on a 2" portable screen. Now if I took public transportation for my commute I might be. Hell in that case I'd probably rather have a portable game player like a PSP or DS.

iRiver H340 40Gig. Color screen is nice, not the most functional but whatever. The guys programming RockBox could do wonders with it. Had it for a year, until I ****ed up by charging it for a night, leaving it unused for a week. Came back from Boys State in June to find that it would never hold a charge longer than 30 mins. iPod Video 30gig - forced into Apple's snare by my mother, but didn't regret doing so. THe battery got bolloxed, so I returned it before Thanksgiving to BestBuy. Awaiting for more 30Gigs to be shipped so I can get it replaced, since Apple taketh it away. I was given a...

iPod Mini 4gig by my mother's boyfriend, as he bought an 80gig Video. Using it now. Like it, though it seems to have some strange issue with going to a playlist I never access that won't display any of the songs in the list. Easily fixed by hitting back and going to the root menu.

SUMMATION: If you want an easy to use, small, flashdrive player, then go with iRiver. If you want to have something that has the greatest amount of peripheries and large amounts of space and function, then go with iPod.

While, currently, iPod edges Zune....it seems to me "IF" Microsoft delivers on their promises for gaming and other media access (which isn't a concern for me), that they will "prevail" in the end....which seems to be Microsoft's M.O. :hmmm:

I have no preference either way. I can't see spending $250 to $350 for these things. I have a nice little MobiBlu B153 2 Gb player with over 120 hours of battery life. The only thing it can't do, space issues obviously, is play video. Costs $130. That was stretching it for me.

I kinda felt the same way, I guess. But with as much as I'm on the computer, just plug it in while I'm on....and battery life is no issue. As for the video, I consider it an "extra"....and the space gives me room to put anything I would ever want on, without having to "manage" the files really....even though I probably will.

I probably could have easily lived with something like what you've got though.

Don't get me wrong. I would love to have either one. I just can't justify the expense of them right now. The problem with both is that they will never really come down in price. One could argue that the Apple finally came down in price this past year with the Nanos being under $150 but there are tons of other options that do the same thing and are much cheaper. May not be better but they are good enough.

If either one offered up their video versions for under $200, I would probably consider taking the leap. But not with the price they are at now. What I really hate is when they up the version number they don't put the old one up at discount prices. They just sell them out at the current price.

About the only reason I'd get the Zune over the Ipod is the bigger screen. The next generation Ipods are supposed to be improved for video, so hopefully that means they'll be getting the widescreen like the Zune.

Also I likely won't be buying until their 80 gig has flash memory instead of a hard drive. I have problems with my Zen HD not spinning up in < 50 degrees when left in the car, plus these mp3 player HD's have a tendency to die prematurely.

Drain all the power before charging it again. Then, plug it in to charge it and you should be good to go. If it keeps happening, you should take it back to the store.

Check to make sure the "hold switch" isn't turned on and if it's not then try resetting the ipod. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705

No, it doesn't. The ipod doesn't convert anything. The iTunes app CAN convert files, but it doesn't do it unless you tell it to. Any music you buy from the iTunes store will be in copyprotected format unless you find a crack to convert it to mp3, but music you rip from your own CD's or download with filesharing software will be unlimited.

You're partially right. ITunes automatically converts wma files to it's own format. MP3 files remain mp3's however.

I used a program called Easy CD-DA extractor to convert apple's m4p files to mp3.

I started running a couple months ago and bought a Nano. Apple sells reconditioned ones on their website so I got the 2GB one for $100, free shipping.

You'd never know it wasn't brand new either. Not a scratch on it, it looked perfect and contained all the manuals and everything. The only thing I didn't get was the fancy box, which I'm not sure I would have paid $50 extra for.

Reconditioned ones are definitely worth a look. It takes the Apple tax off the retail price.
