View Full Version : Did anyone else recently start magically receiving ESPN The Magazine?

So, ESPN The Magazine started showing up in my mailbox... which is odd, cause I didn't ask for it. So, I called the customer service line to find out wtf was up before a bill showed up. I was told the subscription was started by some company called subcirc plus (if I heard the guy correctly) out of W. Des Moines, IA. He put the magazine on hold, but I guess I have to call them to cancel the subscription. He, of course, had no idea how this happened.

Naturally, the offices of this mystery company are closed for the day. Just wondered if anyone else here had already gone through this... might have any idea what sort of phone conversation I have to look forward to... and what led to this situation in the first place.

I'll bet you got that through some inter-corporate deal and there's going to be a surcharge on a bill you expect to get.

Either that or you banged some fat chick in their mail room and she signed you up.

I bet some Albanian guy has stolen your identity, but he hasn't figured out that the stuff he steals should be delivered to him.

Seriously, that's kind of strange.

On a semi-unrelated note, some dude knocked on my door the other day, and I assumed it was one of those sleazy magazine salespeople. Instead, he said, "Are you creative?" I said no. He then said that he was from (forget the name) magazine, and they want to publish stories and poems from creative people. It's a 100% chance that it's a vanity magazine where you pay to see your stuff in a magazine that no one ever buys, but I thought it was funny to have someone selling publishing opportunities door to door.

I think the highlight of the phone call came towards the end.

"Would you like to spend $26 for 26 issues for a gift subscription for a friend?"
"No. The point of this call is to avoid spending money."
"Oh, right."

Yeah, they did that to me too, but I never sent any payment. It didn't hurt my credit and they never had a collection agency try to attain the subscription fee. My guess is to just wait it out and take the freebies. If they try to harass you, turn them in to the BBB.

I don't have a birdcage in need of lining, so the magazines are just taking up space in my trashcan.

Isn't that what the internet's for?

I started receiving Blender magazine for no reason once. I was thinking that it had to do with a Circuit City CC I opened a long time ago and got RollingStone free through it. But I closed that account a long time before. It lasted for a year. It may have been just a promotional "get the word out" thing, or if they billed me, I never got one.

Do you get SI? They could be trying to get you to switch.

No, but I used to. They had a promotion a couple years ago where if you signed up for a free trial subscription to SI you got a free subscription to the MLB.com service that lets you listen to all the games radio broadcasts online. I canceled it before I had to pay, naturally.

I should really cancel my subscription to that, too. They're just piling up around here unread still in the black plastic bags.

Well, I called up this subcirc(?) company today at 800-336-6069. They told me that I had a two year subscription that was set up by someone called Millennium Marketing that I could get a hold of at 800-456-6565. I called up these Millennium folks and was informed that the subscription was supposedly free. According to the guy on the phone I'm never going to receive a bill. He said ESPN was probably trying to increase their circulation... hoping the magazine would land in the lap of a guy like me and blah blah blah f8cking blah. I asked him if he was telling me that, in fact, ESPN The Magazine was the originator of this whole fiasco. He wouldn't confirm that... supposedly he was just telling me a personal theory. Whatever... supposedly, I'm not getting charged we'll see if that holds true.

oh.. .and just for googling purposes...

I got it free for a year after ordering stuff from FansEdge. Perhaps that's why you're getting it.

And it would have to be free, because it's a F#CKING RAG. If you aren't a trendy 20-something from a major coastal city, don't even bother opening the goddamn thing. I immediately throw the ones I get away, along with the rest of the junk mail.

When the issue with Jordan Black on the cover arrives, just toss it.
