I've heard a lot about run run pass punt the last month or so, so I decided to track all of our 1st and 10 situations over the last 4 games to see how often we ran and passed. I used NFL.com gamebooks for this. I excluded drives in the last half of the 4th quarter where we were up or down by 2 scores or more (where we basically needed to run or pass on 1st and 10). Here's the results:

Indy

1st half - 3 runs, 3 passes
2nd half - 2 runs, 3 passes

Jax

1st half - 6 runs, 5 passes
2nd half - 11 runs, 5 passes (this includes all 4 1st and 10's on the final drive of the game that led to Trent Green kneels)

Oak

1st half - 5 runs, 5 passes
2nd half - 5 runs, 2 passes

SD

1st half - 7 runs, 7 passes
2nd half - 6 runs, 5 passes

I'm not saying we weren't a conservative offense. With Larry Johnson and (more importantly) Jordan Black, we definitely were. But we were not nearly as predictable as people think.

It all boils down to execution. Our offensive line SUCKS.

This is one heck of a thread Mr. Dawes.

Our offensive line sucks at smashmouth, straight-ahead run blocking and predictable pass blocking.

Which makes sense, since that's not what the line was built to do...

Perhaps the problem was the defense knowing when each was coming and also the lack of diversity in the runs, especially in the Indy game where I would have prefered to see more screens early.

They suck at all varieties of blocking.

Is that a for real food? Cause it seems like a tater tot is sort of the anti-tofu, and vice-versa.

Yeah, some people are just nutty, Mr. RJ.

I was at a restaurant once that had both steak tartar on chilled plates and tofu tots on the menu. They make pretty much everything out of tofu these days. It's like there are tofu scientists who do nothing but research and develop new, extraordinary uses for the amazing, all-purpose miracle of tofu. Eventually, they'll build houses out of the stuff. We'll all be living like faux gingerbread witches.

good thread, reinforced my thoughts.

PS, glad we can still call for Black's head at Tackle. He'd be an alright Guard though, right? Is he big enough?

Its not just THAT you run, its also HOW you run. Most of the runs are LJ between the tackles for 3 yards or less. At least AS would use a reverse, pitch, toss sweep, counter play, or the Pump draw. SolHermi thinks the dive play is the only running play worth using. Same with the pass on first down. The 3 yd out is not exactly bold.
