Let's say you run a magazine that covers local sports.

Poll forthcoming.

Sorry, I'm assuming Warpaint couldn't get an actual "premier" player.

I voted for Elvis hoping it would be a picture of his clueless face he used to flash to the sidelines after getting sacked.

We could have had Greg Wesley on the cover....lol....

Huh? This is a complete hypothetical.

Nevermind... I already know.

Yeah...whatever.

For the record, here is the latest Warpaint cover:

Only good picture, or what?

Why Black?

Why Black?

We had two features in the magazine...one on Black, one on Wesley. Black was playing pretty well at the time we were putting it together so it seemed like a good choice. Kinda blew up in our face.

Which UFA will you be selecting for your March issue? Last year it was Gary Stills. He was a Raven at the time.

Just to rub salt in the playoff loss wound.... Lin Elliot.

Here's an interesting and also embarrassing tidbit:

The original cover headline was "BLACKOUT."

I'm glad we changed that.

Okay, so maybe this wasn't a hypothetical afterall.

Did that magazine have any players they weren't embarrassed about in 2006? As I recall, they put on Gary Stills in March, Craphonso Thorpe just before he was dumped, Huard in December, and now Black. Who else did they have, gochiefs?

Yeah, I can read. I mean who did they have on their other covers?

Claynus

We also had Ty Law, Herm, Kawika, Tamba Hali twice, and one with Green/LJ/Gonzo.

See, those are better choices. Who chose the cover those months? Keep that guy. Fire whomever chose Stills, Thorpe, Black, & Huard.

I don't even know who makes these decisions to be honest with you. I don't see a problem with any of our covers. We don't have a crystal ball.

You don't see a problem with putting a UFA special teams player on the cover of a magazine that is to be mailed after the UFA period begins? A problem with putting a much maligned young Tackle on the cover when there are 3 other can't miss players on the same offensive line? For a magazine that has been the subject of SO MUCH scrutiny, you'd think they'd at least play the cover conservatively. It just doesn't make any sense. You do 10 covers a year, have over 53 players to choose from and you miss 30% of the time.

No, you have a lot more than that. Apparently you don't restrict your choices only to the Chiefs roster. You also pick from other teams rosters as well.

So, aren't you like the Sr. Editor over there for almost a year now? Has your input for the cover ever been solicited?

Gary wasn't on the Ravens when that issue hit the stands.

Gary wasn't on the Ravens when that issue hit the stands.

But you get the point? He's a special teamer, not a key member of the team. Why in the heck would he grace the cover when there are so many other choices? Would you have voted for him or somebody else on the Chiefs roster? For Jordan Black or some other, more logical choice? Come on - you can't defend this garbage.

There was an article about him in the magazine.

Phil we'd like to hire you as our special magazine covers coordinator. The position pays $500 per year.

That's funny. I'll tell you what. You run all your proposed covers past me and I'll tell you who you shouldn't put on the cover for free.

First day draft picks = good idea
UFA's = bad idea
bubble players = bad idea
12 year Pro-Bowlers = good idea
bad linemen = bad idea
Players of the week = good idea
Team Rookie of the year = good idea
Team MVP = good idea

I think that should get you started towards 2007.

Next cover is William Bartee.

Headline: 2007 Comeback Player of the Year?

That wouldn't shock me at all.

Maybe you should try to find a worn out 80's rock song title to use instead.

I'd like to see one with Percy Snow picking his nose while riding his moped before he crashed and burned on it!

Now THAT would be a great cover story. BLAST from the PAST feature on Percy Snow!
