Nawwwwwww..... They actually play a key role in the balance around here... They will rid your farm of any mice/rats, and also tear the hell out of a nasty snake...

BUT; the snakes will also keep the rat/mice population down also...

That's how we made the family's disposable income when Bob Dole was a kid. When there was snow on the ground over the weekend, we'd usually manage to pick off at least 6 or so just driving around in the sticks.

Seems like the market was propped up because the military used part of the pelts for the lining around parka hoods, and it disappeared when they went to a synthetic fur.

If they're showing no fear of humans, that's probably not a good thing.

It's weird anymore around here... While feeding the cattle in the mornings, they will just stand there and watch me... They don't seem afraid of any movement --- or even when I yell at them...

Makes me think they are VERY VERY HUNGRY !!!! ROFL

But; these 3 that are hanging around are the biggest I've ever seen in a very long time !!!!

Gotta agree with that. The coyotes here have gotten so used to humans that they will jump fences to go after small dogs.....while the dog's owners are there. When they get that hungry and brazen it can be dangerous.

They usually hang out in the hay barns during the winter, and they are known to come up to homes at night to look for cat or dog food... BUT; nothing like this... This is a first for me... They usually run even from a far distance when they saw me coming....

I'll be sure and keep an eye out... I'll have to go out next week at night to check on new calves... I'll keep the spot light and automatic rifle on ready fire....

My neighbor will chase them and shoot roman candles at them.... ROFL ROFL ROFL He VERY seldom has a problem with them anymore...

Probably not an adult but maybe a small child if they saw the chance. I've read reports here in New Mexico of kids walking alone getting chased but not actually injured. I see them near my house often and I don't live in a rural area.

They can be nasty in packs. One of my dogs could easily kill a coyote but a pack is different. They are mean and smart.

PinkFloyd
01-19-2007, 10:43 PM
This one brave SOB that comes right up to my house looks nothing like your TYPICAL coyote... It IS a coyote ---- but looks like a cross breed with maybe a wolf.... There has been reports of the conservation department releasing wolves back to the wild around here...

We have mountain lions now too... But; they pretty much stay to themselves... They usually tuck and run when spotted...

Coyotes run in packs. They were my worst enemy when I had my Angora goats. I used Great Pyrenees dogs and donkeys to counter them. The coyotes would send one coyote out toward the herd to lure the dog then several more would attack it. I've found the remains of three coyotes before with Ol' Duke all scratched up. I never got to see Duke fight but I got to see the results. If you have calves, you had better get some dogs and a donkey.

Yep, we have some coyotes and foxes in our neighborhood too. Some of the neighbors saw a mountain lion a few times this summer too. We're suburban but he had to go through a lot of neighborhoods to get to ours. They later found a dead lion on the train tracks not too far from here so we think that was probably him.

Yep --- that's exactly right... Called the local conservation agent this morning and he said that's what they are after... Said during the winter, they will do their usual "hunt", but if all else fails, they will be looking for cat or dog food that has not been ate... Or; even just be looking for a cat...

He said if the cattle are having calves --- all the older cattle will chase off a coyote from their young... I've seen that happen here hundreds of times... But; I STILL DO regular checks on them at night to make sure...

As far as humans --- 9 times out of 10 a coyote will not go after a human...Coyotes are not to fond of anything that appears larger than them... Now; if you go and get one cornered and mess with it --- you might be in it's way for and escape exit !!

Being a conservation agent, he didn't really want me to do anything to them, since he said this was natural for them --- to come around homes at night... BUT I HAVE A FEELING I will be getting trigger happy here later tonite !!! :p

9 times out of 10, Mr. Pinkfloyd? Those aren't good odds when facing down a drooling coyote.

They make coyote calls. You can buy them at the local sporting goods store, or maybe Wal-Mart.

I'd buy one. But, instead of blowing, suck. Rather than calling the coyote, that will reproduce the international signal for a coyote being castrated with pinking shears. They will flee, never to return.

As for the Pyranese...I've never seen them run with Cattle. They bond with the sheep. I have seen 2 of them shot coming out of our chicken house though. killed 25 for sport. I'm not a fan of those dogs either.

My brother has two of them, and he's trying to get rid of them. He got them specifically to keep coyotes away from his cats and pack of rat terriers (don't ask). They now wander the countryside, like 10 miles or more, wreaking havoc. Well, they don't really wreak havoc, mostly they trek up to a small convenience store and hang out outside of it waiting for people to pet them or feed them. Unfortunately, they have gotten into trouble twice. Once a farmer found them on a dead cow, which he said he knew they hadn't killed. Still not a good thing. Then they got in with a pack of ferals and killed a sheep. They ferals all ran, but the stupid ass pyrhenees stuck around, wagging their tail and wanting to get petted by the farmer. My brother payed for the livestock. Now the dogs are constantly chained up, so they won't wander. My brother hates to chain them, but he has no choice now. He's looking for a good home, so....Pink if you want a couple of coyote killers, I can hook you up.

They actually have dogs now that are trained to track down the coyote, and kill the coyote themselves... Each dog wears a tracking device, so you will be able to locate them...

Coyote hunting is no longer what it use to be where you spotted them and shot them with a rifle... You let the dogs do all the work now...

Problem solved.

No, no. He has a COYOTE problem, not a stampeding pack of Elephants in the next county problem.

Well, that's carpcrap, Mr. Pinkfloyd. Where's the fun in that?

When I was a boy, I remember going on a "coyote hunt". Basically dozens of men from my home town would go out and start walking toward the center of a mile section. The coyotes would run toward the center and, when the men had converged, they would blast their asses to kingdom come while trying to avoid shooting a townsperson.

Now, that's a sporting event.

420 isn't much... I know --- ummmmmmmmmm ---- errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr --- several of neighbors and I have at least 2,000-3,000 apiece.... Country people don't mess around !!! :p

oh, for sure I didn't mean it like that. too much ammo is like saying too much beer, or too many titties to look at....

I was thinking more along the line of 420 rounds for one or two coyotes, you use more than one or two rounds an animal and PETA would be on you for abuse or somehting.

That reminds me, in texas we would have turkey shoot competitions every year out on the outdoor range for the department I worked for. one of our past officers, who left to go air marshall post 9/11 was there. He wanted to keep his profile low....

.....so when the local media were asking him what department he worked for, he said he was a PETA agent and wanted to be sure we weren't shooting real turkeys....

The kicker, while reading the article the next day, he said his name was Ron Jeremy.

"Ron Jeremy from a local PETA post was there too" classic, classic.

It would be fun to just watch them haul ass with that many rounds flying their way though !!! :)

WOW... 300 miles to do 10 minutes work... Unless we all pass out in the 10 degree weather, then you all would be up here longer than that...

We could do some ice fishinf I guess... I got some 10 pound bass in the pond...

Livestock owners in Kansas have a license to kill predators, I'm sure other states have similar laws...if they pizz you off do like we used to do, track them down on 3 wheelers and motorcycles and gun them down...got 24 one winter. A comealong and a sharp knife make them easier to skin but it's still a biatch.

gut-shoot them from a tree. if there are others around, they'll creep up to check out the wounded. then gut shoot them.

Used to hunt them with trail hounds.."running-walkers" a smaller faster version of walker coon-hounds..when the trail hounds got the coyotes circling we'd dump our sight-dogs.."grey-hounds" on them..they"d run them down and tear them mofos up...

Around here; we have the right to shoot any predator that indangers any livestock, or family... Believe it or not -- they consider the timber rattlesnake here an indangered specie... They claim it's a $5,000 fine just for killing them...

Hard to believe they are endangered, when myself and afew friends went and captured about 150 of them from a friends property and moved them somewhere else one year...

That's what they do around here now... You don't even kill them with a gun anymore... They have dogs that track them and kill them themselves..
