Pensacola evangelist Kent Hovind was sentenced Friday afternoon to 10 years in prison on charges of tax fraud.

After a lengthy sentencing hearing that last 5 1/2 hours, U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers ordered Hovind also:

-- Pay $640,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

-- Pay the prosecution’s court costs of $7,078.

-- Serve three years parole once he is released from prison.

Hovind’s wife, Jo Hovind, also was scheduled to be sentenced. Rodgers postponed her sentencing until March 1 to allow her defense attorney an opportunity to argue possible discrepancies in sentencing guidelines.

Prior to his sentencing, a tearful Kent Hovind, also known as "Dr. Dino" asked for the court’s leniency.

“If it’s just money the IRS wants, there are thousands of people out there who will help pay the money they want so I can go back out there and preach,” Hovind said.

Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism and Dinosaur Adventure Land in Pensacola, was found guilty in November of 58 federal counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes. He faced a maximum of 288 years in prison.

Jo Hovind was charged and convicted in 44 of the counts involving evading bank-reporting requirements and faces a maximum of 225 years in prison.

Kent Hovind, who is incarcerated in the Escambia County Jail, will be assigned to a prison by the Bureau of Prisons. Rodgers recommended Kent Hovind be sent to the prison at Saufley Field in Pensacola so he will be close to his family.

It will be up to the Bureau of Prisons, however, to make that determination.

His entire life was a fraud. From the claim of dinosaurs walking with humans to his "Ph.D."

He once offered 250,000 dollars to anyone who disproved the "young earth theory." He lost several debates but would never pay up.

That he attempted to defraud the govt (and his employees) should come as no surprise

That would be the Ph. D from the diploma-mill that is CO's "Patriot University"?

Their sole academic accredidation is the American Accrediting Association of Theological Institutions. ROFL

Exactly. I have actually read his dissertation and it was supposed to be about the effect of teaching evolution in the public schools. It held no original research

Instead, His "dissertation" was an 86 pages long sermon that had no reference section. It held several sections that were written over and over with the same verbage, and was filled with misspellings. The one table in the "dis" was cut out of another book and pasted on a piece of paper. Of course he did not cite the book. The crux was that evolution formed the basis of other world religions (yeah, that one floored me), communism, democrats, etc.

Yet, young earthers, continually look to people like this for "evidence" of their position.

Well, in all fairness there are also many that don't realize Marx's "Das Capital" and Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" were both satirical essays in the tradition of Swift's "A Modest Proposal". :p

This had to be my favorite part of the article:

“If it’s just money the IRS wants, there are thousands of people out there who will help pay the money they want so I can go back out there and preach,” Hovind said."

Translation- I can't be bothered to pay my taxes, but I've got mailing lists full of rubes that will. ROFL

Isn't that a bit of a harsh sentence for a tax cheat?

I don't think so. Looks like it wasn't just his income tax he cheated on, he got nailed in November for other tax fraud, as did his wife. This wasn't a mistake, this was a long term attempt to defraud the government.

If I stole a Million and a half from the government, they'd nail my ass to the wall.

Besides, I doubt he'll do the full 10 years.

Nah, I think he was a speaker at a conference or something that I went to church related? Would have been more than 10 years ago. Maybe it wasn't him. Guy with a southern accent kind of... same subject matter.

I'm sure there are some decent evangelists out there, and there might even be a couple televangelists who are above board, but they get overshadowed by pricks like this guy!
