Prince's entire attitude is opposite of what a JW should be. His lifestyle, too. If he wants to be a normal person he should ditch the JW faith.

I dont know him personally like you do, but I would say that a persons faith is personal. Period. If he lives his life as good as he can by whatever standards set for his particular faith then who are we to judge? I do agree that he has not been the poster boy for ANY true christian religion in the past but I have to say that some people do CHANGE. What has he done in recent years to make you say what you said? From what Ive read he only became a JW in the past few years. JMO.

Kind of like you pining on young boys and girls, being a stalker of carrie underwood, too afraid to grow up and move out of the basement, so mighty that you enjoy picking on other posters til they crack and get banned, love staring at other dudes junk in the bathroom, loves driving around the block trying to figure out how to stalk a fat chick while your sister gangbangs guys in her room..

FWIW, if your "an NFL cretan" and your overly concerned about public image because of past bad experiences what would be safer choice for your halftime show than a guy who USED to be wild/hip with a certain crowd that is now in its mid to upper thirtys than Prince, who happens to have become much more religious in recent years and has tried to clean up his act? SOunds logical to me.

I mean, you're having beers, scarfing down nachos and wings, you're in the middle of the culmination of the season of the most masculine thing on earth, professional football. And the NFL decides to roll out the guy who ran around in assless pants, trying to hack his way through Purple Rain?

They should put Carrie Underwood out there next year. She's a good, clean, wholesome, All-American girl with a sweet smile, and a decent musician to boot. And I don't think she needs a cock-guitar or a gender-symbol stage.

On the downside she might sing about Jesus. And she needs to be kept away from NFL players, too.

My wife is a pretty major Prince Fan, since the early 80's.
We saw him at his club in Vegas a couple months ago from the pit and it was an awesome show. Those twins he has singing backup and dancing around are solid babeage.

I agree that his halftime show was rockin'. Great medley.

And, for what it's worth, he has the highest-grossing, 100 percent sell-out tour across the U.S. in 2005. So, I think he was an appropriate choice for such a diverse, mainstream audience as the SuperBowl.

His music was changing, and it would've been interesting to see where he took it. Can you imagine an SRV/Hendrix concert? That would've been unbelieveable.

would've been great... I often wonder the direction music would've taken if all of the 'visionaries' of the late 60's hadn't bought so heavily into the drug and alcohol 'culture' and instead vested more of themselves purely into the music... but it makes one wonder how much of their sheer brilliance was actually brought on by the altered states of consciousness that they attained through drugs-- look back over the last millenia or so, most of the 'great minds' were on some sort of drug or another-- so is it the brillance that's amplified by the altered state of consciousness, or the wreckless lack of abandon (bringing on their ultimate demise) that makes them truly brilliant?

wow people..music..like art..is subjective..I don't care if people enjoyed it...good for them..it just didn't do anything for me...doesn't make me right or anyone else wrong..This pretty much sums it all up.

I personally thought he did a great job. He mixed in a lot of old songs I liked as a kid, and mixed them with some well done covers.

Prince covered more yards than the Bears did.

Great HT show, far superior to the past few years. Like his music or not the guy has talent and is a showman. Plus great selection of songs.

Grossman laid a turd and the cover 2 Bears didnt Cover one of Mannings efforts. Cover 2 Indy smoked Grossman. But so would Hickman Mills HS band the way they played.

Really cool too was a bunch of people at the SB party saying "Prince? really?" Then when the show is on, everyone's glued to the screen, and the little kids [1 1/2 - about 8 yo] are dancing around. I'd say this was overall really well received and he picked up a whole new generation of fans.

Is it your breath or is it mine?...

I saaay somethin' is stinkin' baby...

Then the hook...

I think it's it you baby.. you had BBQ chips and I had the regular kind..

I know the lyrics are a little hokey, but it was light and funny, and he was just absolutely making this accoustic guitar sing... just imagine an accoustic doing unheard things after each line, that's pretty much how it was. He also did a lot of crowd interaction, and came off as a pretty normal guy, which is something I didn't expect at all.

From what I understand there are not many instruments he can't play..

I've always liked prince, but never really realized how good he is musician-wise, until I went to see him live a few years back. He came out all alone with an accoustic guitar and proceeded to do this one-off blues tune about bad breath...

Somethin' in here is stinkin' baby...

Yup. The dude is unbelievably talented. Early in his career he used to do it all---write, produce, and played every instrument on every recorded version of the songs.

It's too bad the feud with the record label left him so jaded....and stole a good chunk of his creative career due to the bitterness. He lost popular exposure and mainstream opportunities during his moping. I know he was never really about the pop scene, but I just think a whole lot of folks missed out on his talents....and just kind of dismiss him as "wierd"....as someone along the lines of Michael Jackson....and that is just SOOOOOOOO not the case, IMO.

That's what I learned when I saw him live. It's hard to explain, but he just said normal things and acted normal when chatting with the crowd (the show was "in the round and people were right next to the stage). No hype, no "look at me, I'm great", just a great performer spending a fun night with thousands of his fans. And you came away with the feeling that he enjoyed it as much as the fans.

Of coarse the Time opened up for him, and Jerome was just thorowing down....

I "grew up" during that era and loved all of his spin offs- Time, Shelia E., Apollonia 6, etc..

I'm puzzled why anyone wouldn't have like it. If you don't care for Prince songs fine, he played some Hendrix( a Dylan song btw), some Foo Fighters and some CCR. That covers the 60's, 70's, 90's and his stuff from the 80s.

What more exactly could you want? This is the halftime show of the Super Bowl. They're not going to pick Panic at the Disco or any other current hot flavour.

I enjoyed it more than most of the others in recent memory.

He was performing in a friggin downpour. He wasn't lip synching some song he ripped off from someone else's hook, Didn't have his fake titty whipped out, good pyro and a nice variety of his songs and something for others.

What made the show for me, was when my 18m/o laughed her way to the TV, put her hands up as high as she could on it and was dancing with the crowd to Purple Rain.

I agree with your statement that the people giving Prince great reviews are probably people who grew up in his era, are mostly mid to late thirties / early 40s, and already liked him to begin with.

But to use Styx as some kind of a badge of musical taste.... it's like saying because there's a finger painting on your fridge you appreciate Picasso.

Several people, including myself, have already denied that this is the case in this thread alone. I've never been a Prince fan at all, but I think he did a pretty good job at halftime last night, especially in comparison to recent halftime performers. Have there been any Prince fans who panned the performance yet?

It looks to me that the only people who had a prejudiced opinion going in but ended up coming out of the performance with a changed mind are those who say he performed well. I count myself in that group.
