View Full Version : Alcohol for a nasty cold
Screw taking a 10% alcohol based cold medicine to knock me out for a good nights sleep. I might as well catch a buzz. A hangover couldn't make me feel worse. What's a good alcohol for this? brandy in coffee? Beer just will not taste good right now.

Alcohol is a diuretic. It sucks all of the water out of your cells. It may make you feel better for awhile but is not good for fighting off illness.

Brandy in hot tea.
Do the alcohol if you want. But also, lots of vitamin C and water. Hope you feel better soon.
My girlfriend swears by this stuff: http://www.herbalremedies.com/72700.html

That is the exact "recipe" I used when I was sick last week. It worked better for the sore throat than any of the stuff I got from the drug store and gave the added benefit of being able to sleep. I recommend it highly.

I agree with Skip on this one. The only reason alcohol is in cold medicine is to help you sleep, not to make you feel better. Alcohol is not good for a cold cure.
That being said, if you're going to try to drink it away, you might as well go for screwdrivers. At least you'll get vitamin C that way.
I can't see how you would want to drink coffee when you're sick. Too much caffeine. Also, hot toddies have helped me when I'm congested, but done little for my overall cold. Just my experience though.
Hope you get well soon!
If alcohol isn't good for a cold why is it an ingredient in Nyquil?

Maybe because it helps you sleep?
Maybe because it helps you sleep?
But if alcohol is bad for a cold why not put in another type of sleep aid?
Neither a physician nor a pharmacist am I.

Maybe it's the most effective when conbined with the other ingredients that are supposed to relieve some symptoms long enough for the alcohol to kick in and put you to sleep.
I'm just guessing as well.
The nerd in me is going to try to look it up for you.
If it helps....
NyQuil contains 10% alcohol while DayQuil is alcohol free. Some of the ingredients used to relieve different cold symptoms in DayQuil are different than those in NyQuil, and DayQuil has the warning to avoid drinking alcohol due to the contents.

Not sure about a cold, but for the flu I just put on about 5 layers of clothes and then get under about 10 blankets and sweat it out...
Works every time...

Maybe they choose alcohol for the sleep aid ingredient because it's cheaper than any alternative. Similar to the way so many foods use high fructose corn syrup.

Makes sense to me. If it's cheaper, easier, more readily available, and (most important to the company) people will buy it, then go for it.

Because underage drinkers can't stomache enough mouthwash it get a buzz. NyQuil and 7up fit in a kid's back pack.
