AND why always do your damn Station ID with some stupid statement "Stay tuned to channel xx and our live excellent doplar radar thingy so we can keep you annoyed and ahead of the bad weather coming your way to kill you right now."

Can you imagine being married to Katie Horner?

5 hours before dawn she would jump out of bed and turn all the lights on yelling about how later that morning, you were going to forget to take out the trash. She would go on and on, refusing to allow you to go back to sleep, insisting that you WILL forget to take out the trash and it IS critically important for you to know about it. Then by the time the garbage truck comes around you're pissed off and don't take it out just to make a point, and for the next 12 hours you are treated to repeated clips of trash cans and a map of the house showing the trash can's location, and areas where dangerous trash accumulation may require you to seek shelter. But despite your hopes that eventually she will leave you alone so you can just watch TV, she continues talking about what's already happened for the next 12 hours and promising to return after that each and every time another item is deposited in the trash can for more wall-to-wall coverage.

The station manager and news director decide who goes on, how long they stay on, and what programming is interrupted. Katie just does as she's told.

Local stations have been Chicken Little on the weather stuff over the past couple years. I was reading in the KC Star a few weeks back, their News Director at TV5 wants it that way. They sensationalize everything. He's on his way to Dallas now to screw up their TV market.

Station Managers think more people watch when bad weather is threatening, and they get more viewers when the weather is hyped up. They may miss out on a few commercials that night, but if their viewership goes up, especially during a sweeps period, they'll make that up in spades later with higher rates for commerical spots. So they lose a little yesterday, make a bunch more later.

Katie is a drama queen. She was telling little kids not to be scared, and then basically said :"A tornado probably won't kill you tonight, but don't let your parents go out and drive through high water or they might drown....even if they're in a Jeep!" WTF is that all about?

I saw a photog someplace downtown doing a live piece about some drains that were flooded, presumably clogged with debris or something. Then this van drove through it, and the water was a few inches deep but not like a foot deep or anything.

The reporter was like "OH MY GAWD! That is very dangerous, they are lucky that their van wasn't swept away there."

I mean, give me a break. They drove through a deep puddle! It's not like they were fording the Mississippi! Where were they going to get swept away to? a couple of feet to the right, in the area of the storm drain?

I have a friend that works for the #1 news station here.

There won't ever be an end to the sensationalization of severe weather, in fact it's only going to get worse.
