SEATTLE - A medical assistant at the Country Doctor Community Clinic in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood is accused of rape and sexual abuse of patients inside the exam rooms.
Prosecutors allege a 28-year-old medical assistant named Fitsum Habtom Fikak targeted patients who he knew to be fragile and less able to fight back.
Fikak is accused of cornering a 30-year-old female patients in an exam room, putting his hands her breasts - over and under her clothing.
Prosecutors say Fikak began making unwanted advances on patients last September.
Their documents allege Fikak "kept coming onto" the victim "forcefully," saying she "wanted it."
That woman had been a victim of past abuse and says "she didn't know what to do," and that he "scared (her) to the point" that she just gave in.
The victim says she was raped on an examination table and was too scared to tell anyone. She says it happened two more times when she returned for other doctor visits, and that Fikak told her not to tell.
A second victim, a 20-year-old woman, says Fikak "grabbed her and kissed her on the mouth, forcing his tongue into her mouth" in an exam room. When she pushed him away, she claims Fikak said "the next time you come here, you're gonna get poked."
Fikak's arrest stunned the popular clinic, which has been operating on Capitol Hill for more than 30 years.
Linda McVeigh, the executive director of the clinic, says she fears she's lost the trust of the two alleged victims, as well as that of thousands of others.
"It shakes me to my core," she said tearfully.
McVeigh says she was shocked because Fikak passed every background check, had excellent references, and a good one-year work record. On Thursday the state health department suspended his medical credentials.
"This is outrageous behavior that no patient should ever have to be subjected to in this state - ever," said Laurie Jinkins with the health department.
Fikak is from the African country of Eritrea. He claims what happened was consensual. He is being held in the King County Jail. [/IMG]
