View Full Version : Huggins is seriously considering the West Virginia job

I don't understand why he would leave KSU after one year, knowing his team had a bright future. He could build KSU basketball into something they haven't seen in Manhattan. Huggins doesn't seem like the most loyal guy if he were to stay one more year but leave with Beasley and Walker.

Huggins mulls leaving K-State for West Virginia

April 4, 2007
By Gary Parrish
CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer

An impromptu rally on campus designed to raise support to help Kansas State keep Bob Huggins was canceled Wednesday night amid speculation the West Virginia graduate could be close to returning to his alma mater after one season with the Wildcats.

A source close to the situation told CBS SportsLine.com over the weekend that if John Beilein left for Michigan, then Huggins would be West Virginia's top target. Now, according to another source, Huggins is seriously considering the opportunity, but he's struggling with whether to pursue his desire of returning to the Big East at the expense of walking away from a Kansas State roster full of elite-level talents who would've never considered attending KSU if not for Huggins luring them to a remote part of the country far away from their homes.

Most notably, that list includes Bill Walker and Michael Beasley. Both could've gone anywhere in the nation, but each picked Kansas State -- hardly a traditional basketball power, at least in recent years -- based solely on Huggins or hires Huggins made upon accepting the KSU job a little more than a year ago.

According to a source, the ideal situation for Huggins would've been for the West Virginia job to open after next season, that way he could've exited Kansas State at the same time Walker and Beasley presumably turned pro. In other words, a move to West Virginia would've been a no-brainer for Huggins after the 2007-08 season, but under these circumstances, at this point, he's genuinely torn.

If Huggins leaves the trickle-down effect could be interesting.

Walker, a rising sophomore, is probably stuck at KSU regardless because transferring would force the 6-foot-6 wing to miss all of next season before regaining his eligibility -- meaning that's a senseless move considering Walker will likely enter the 2008 NBA Draft. But if Huggins left Kansas State, Beasley would almost certainly ask for his release from a national letter of intent, and if it was granted, the incoming freshman would be free to reopen his recruitment or perhaps even follow Huggins to West Virginia if KSU didn't object.

Attempts Wednesday to reach Huggins were unsuccessful.

Huggins led Kansas State to the NIT this past season. The Wildcats finished 23-12 overall. Prior to KSU, Huggins compiled a 399-127 record in 16 seasons at Cincinnati before resigning under pressure in August 2005. The forced resignation came a year after a highly publicized DUI arrest.

I didn't realize WVU was Huggin's alma mater.

Tough call; if he has ANY integrity, he'll stay at KSU. If he is the schister some consider him, he'll leave. JMHO

IMO, KSU went out on a limb for him; he owes them something.

Anyway, I think it would be jacked up if he left after one year, but since it's K-State I won't be too broke up about it.

People will definitely bash him, and I've been critical of him... but I don't think I'd think less of him if he went home. If it was any other job it would probably look bad, but this is supposed to be his dream job.

What is the deal with all the talent talks about KSU? He has one great player coming in who hasnít signed his LOI yet, and one player recovering from a serious knee injury... The rest of the roster is a bunch of average players... Benneck? Bitch please! That dude is a waste of roster space...

The GRCOAT isnít that special anymore... If Huggy leaves, he can and will take Beasley with him to WVU... Walker will just be collateral damage...

true, they can bail on the LOI, but they have to sit out a year. And with both having NBA futures, neither wants to sit on the bench for a year. They will either play at KSU, or sit out for the NBA draft.

You dont have to sit out a year if the school releases you from you LOI when a coach leaves... Since he has never played a year of college ball... Walker would have to sit a year though.. But not Beasley

Walker is the only one here that might get hosed in this deal...

Walker will get screwed, but Beasley will be free to go to another team just like Scottie Reynolds was allowed to leave last offseason when Sampson left OU. That said, KSU will probably include a stipulation that he can't follow Huggs to WVU.

I have posted it on here numerous times that I feel Ted Owens is the guy that put the NCAA on to the Shockers. Call it sour grapes, but the action was swift, right after the Shockers upstaged KU in the 1981 NCAA tournament. The best team ever assembled by WSU was unable to make a return visit to the tournament.

Do you not find it ironic, now that KSU is on the verge of putting their program back on a high level and the investigation came up clean, that this thing about Huggins gets all blown up.

Who is stirring this pot? I could be all wet, but history has a way of repeating itself.

Hmmm, as a die hard fan WSU fan I'd love for it to be true so the true evil of the gheyhawks could be exposed for all the world to see. Their fear, their Rump Rangery smiling bird and their frat boy circle jerks et al. That being said I can't see how this could possibly have anything to do with KU. It seems to me like a case of native son going home after a year of getting his act together at KSU and proving he can win and stay sober.

No. He's gone. I don't even have any ill will towards the guy. It's the "what might have been" when I look towards next season that causes me some angst.
