View Full Version : Browns Pushing Ahead with Plans for Trent Green

As reported this morning:

http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?Category=17&ID=346538&subCategoryID=26

“The situation is probably somewhere between having a pulse and being able to walk,’’ Savage said on the Browns’ AM radio flagship, WTAM.

Savage outlined the process that could bring to Cleveland a quarterback who averaged 4,221 passing yards in the three seasons from 2003-05.

The starting point, he said, is negotiating a “ballpark’’ contract that would entice Green to visit the Browns complex to gauge his willingness to playing in Cleveland.

“The attraction for us would be, we’re gonna run a similar offense to where he has been,’’ Savage said.

Savage said he has talked to last year’s starting QBs, Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson, about acquiring Green. He said the Green process might not be resolved one way or the other until draft day, April 28.

I know that the team wants extra picks but if he can be used to move up in one of the first 3 rounds then that would work for me.

Swapping 3rd round picks with Cleveland actually be pretty huge.

Moving up in the 3rd is certainly much better than an extra 6th to me. Chicago traded Thomas Jones to move up from the end to early 2nd.

Green is going to punish us this year regardless of which team he goes to

same with Kawika Mitchell

Imagine the Chiefs vs the Patriots...in a game where the Chiefs need to win..and Mitchell getting 4 or 5 sacks or changing the game and the Chiefs lose....

Its every players wish to play against their old team and have a career day.

Remember how Marcus Allen reacted every time he knew he was going to play against the Raiders?

Green for a 4th-5th more like it or conditional and 2008.

I've always thought the fourth was fair and what we would probably end up getting. But the closer it gets to training camp, the more a good quarterback becomes a valuable commodity. I'm beginning to believe that Carl might get a three. That may be what he's been aiming at all along. There aren't a lot of available quarterbacks with Trent's track record.

On the other hand, Herm has said he wants to load up on picks. I would be happy with multiple picks, like a fourth and a sixth (or maybe even a fifth). Doesn't Cleveland have a lot of second day picks?

Watch out for the Panthers if Delhome has a bad streak of games Carr would most definitely take his job and kickass . The guy's damn good, and given the chance the guy could be a nightmare and wreck havoc against the opposing defense.

Anybody know what Cleveland's 3rd rd pick is at?

http://www.nfl.com/draft/drafttracker/team/CLE

3rd pick in the 3rd round. CLE and TB alternate the 3rd/4th picks in each round, with the Browns getting the 3rd in odd # rounds, TB gets 3rd in evens. Either way, they have great position.

I really don't think we're talkin realistically that Cleveland will give us the 3rd round pick, but rather switch places in the 3rd with us. Still a great deal for us, IMO.

EDIT: BTW, that move up in the 3rd equates, from the value chart, to a high-to-mid 4th.

Three weeks ago we probably would have taken it. But then Miami 1) made it known that their coach wants Trent, 2) made it known their coach doesn't want Culpepper, 3) tried to play hardball and pissed Carl off, and 4) traded their kicker for more than they were willing to give up for the guy they want as their starting QB. Oh yeah, 5) talked up David Carr as soon as he got cut, hoping to make KC cave, only to watch him not even visit them and sign somewhere else.

It's hilarious how badly Miami has blown this. They have no leverage at all now. Not to mention no QB. There's no chance whatsoever of Carl taking a 6th or less from them at this point, assuming he ever would have anyway. And Miami doesn't have a 5th round pick. That alone moves it up into the 4th round range, which I imagine most people here would be thrilled with.

And all of that is before you take into account that there's other players for Trent, which will only drive it higher.

If the only other option is a R5, the I agree. Better value to move up than take another R5, IMO.

Moving up from #84 to #67 is a significant jump. Net difference of 85 points on the draft value chart.

Cleveland's R4 pick, #103 is of equal value, worth 88 points on the value chart.

I'd be fine with either, but the swap of R3 picks is probably more realistic....

I'd take a swap of 3rds and a conditional 4th next year based on playing time, touchdowns and yards.

If Trent doesn't meet those, that pick becomes a 6th.

Getting a 6th from Miami is ****ing worthless. Simply worthless, I'd rather cut Green than get a slap in the face 6th round pick.

I think a 4th round pick would be a reasonable asking price for Green.
A 5th wouldn't be too bad.

It's just that, no team is going to give up a lot for a 37 year old QB coming off a concussion who is possibly on the downside of his career?

If the best we can get out of Green is a 6th or 7th round pick, then I say make the trade. The way I see it, better that, then to have absolutely nothing in return for him. getting extra draft picks won't hurt, even the player turns out to be nothing. At least we know that the team gave it a shot to try their best to get something in return for Green.

I think the Chiefs have to approach this with the right attitude. Better something than nothing.

*But I think Carl will pull the strings on this one, and I see it going down to the wire.
