I was on the old BB and topics like "The Pac-10 Is Back" were all over it.
Who backs an entire conference? If the Chiefs get eliminated from the playoffs, the LAST team I'd want to see in the Super Bowl is another AFC West team.
Maybe some of these people are fans of the worst teams in their conference, so they attempt to live vicariously through another team that has used 'em like a receptacle earlier in the season, thus concealing the fact that their "real" team sucks ***!!
Or maybe they just have 10 or 12 favorite teams.
I was going to say 'The same schmucks who root for the AFC West after KC flames out!', but you've already covered that, so I guess I won't say it.
BTW, any Chief fan who pulls for the Donks or Faders, can KISS MY SKINNY WHITE ***!!!!! Sorry, had to say it.

I can't answer for everyone but the reason I posted it was because our California teams are in it. I am a Cardinal fan 1st but if they do not win it would be nice to have a California team. I was also raised in Oregon and would like to see an Oregon team win it all someday before I die.

Call me a schmuck but I hate all the other teams in the AFC West though. Can't explain it. Just how it is.

Being smack dab in the middle of K-State country, I gotta cheer for someone and since I don't follow college b-ball that much I just go for anyone in our conference that's winnin. Football however is a different matter...I never root for the other division teams, I root against em!

Grbac the Pac 10, but I'll root for all Big XII teams even though my favorite team is KU...I mean if ISU was playing, or MU I'd root for them...but only in the NCAA tourny...not during the regualr season...
Now as far as football goes...Fu-k the AFC west except the Chiefs...I want the rest of the west to lose every game they play...and none of this BS that you hear about well if another AFC west team wins it all it just shows we are the best division...**** that...

I can understand if you're a casual fan with no real "favorite" team.
I just can't understand, say, a big UCLA fan that switches his/her allegiance to USC the moment the Bruins are eliminated...and even bashes other conferences because USC won!!

I think its familiarity with those teams. I'm not a huge Basketball fan, but like the Hawkeyes. If they are out, I'd just assume see a Big 10 team win vs another...I guess in a way it helps feel a little "vindicated" that our guys lost to the team that won.?.
In HS, I was rivals with several guys at my weight in wrestling..we pounded each other at tournaments week in and week out...but I would cheer guys from my conference in the finals IF/after I had been beaten out..vs oponents from other states/conferences.
AFCwest is a completely different story....If the Chiefs are done..screw the other guys..I root underdog from then on.
Just somethin to chew on, clint. Each victory in the Big Dance for your alum or fav team's conference adds big $$ into the shared pool awarded to that conference. And it's split EQUALLY amoung the conference schools, ie K-State will get the same $$ as KU.

Iowanian explained my thoughts pretty well. Conferences in the NFL are much different than in College Basketball. The strength of your conference has many more implications that in the NFL. A strong conference contributes to a higher RFI which is a determining factor for putting you in the dance. Familiarity with the other teams is another strong factor. I cheer Big Ten teams in the dance when Iowa drops out. I don't think I can explain it real well but that's just the way it is and has always been for me.

I thought I'd taught you all better by now, but I guess I'm wrong...repeat after me...
There is only one great conference in College...
The Big XII
The Big XII
The Big XII
thanks for your attention...;)

Go Cardinal. This is our rebuilding year? Yea!!!

I think you have to take it comparison to other non-conf teams. But college basketball is waaaaaay diff'urnt from pro football.
I couldn't care less what some (most) of the Big 8+4 teams do in conf. But OOC, I like to see 'em win out.
I guess my #2 AFC West would be the Seahawks. It must be 'cuz they always suck, and are therefore rarely a threat to the Chiefs.
It kills me when other AFC West teams to good in the playoffs; I always think it should be the Chiefs doin' it.

I root for whoever I have winning in my tournament brackets no matter what conference they are in. I can root for some big XII teams (Oklahoma, Okie State, maybe Texas) But no way in hell will I EVER root for Mizzou. EVER. I even had them picked to beat UGA in the first round and when Gilbert hit that winning shot I was so confused. I was pissed that the Tiggers had won, but glad because I get the point for that game.

I guess it is different from Pro to College.
I went to IU, I love IU, and I support IU, period.
However, I want to proof my conference is the toughest by far, which in basketball it is. To do that is to support every team in my conference (except Purdue) to go as far as they can.
Roy does well in his conference, yet he and his Big 12 brethen always falls short in March. This says that he may have a good team, but even an average team will do well against a bunch of post season losers. So how can Roy and the Jayhawks (do they remind anyone else of Heckyl and Jeckyl?) ascertain how good they are? By saying they beat a bunch of near or below average teams? By playing in a conference that does next to nil each year in March.
While Indiana has not fared well in recent years, at least they played for the conference title in a conference that has put 2 of the final four on the court for the last two years, and still has two big boys going Elite 8 (one who was supposedly 'overrated' by beating that Monster of a team in the Big 12).
While KU lost a title to a conference that has diddly to show for it half way through the College Basketball Post season.
As an ACC fan, I'd say it's familiarity with the players and respect for the other programs. I hate Duke and Carolina when they're playing Maryland, but I always root for them come tournament time. It's impossible to not have admiration for every team in the league after watching them do battle with one another for the past 30+ years.
As far as rooting for AFC West opponents, forget that. Whole different story. I can be happy for some of their fans (jq, UD, Joe Seahawk, MHM, etc.) but not for the teams themselves.
