Hey, I'll start by saying that I liked Ray and I think he is a good pickup and that he has a year (maybe) two left of good productivity.

However, KC might have overpaid. Who really knows though, everyone overpays players in FreeAgency.

I like the addition of Kennison for Denver. He's young, fast and has been productive in the past. He's never been with an offense as talented as Denver, so we'll see. Plus, his cap number is very nice!

Now that Denver has Kennsion to spread the field for Ed and Rod, this should also open up the middle for Clark since it sounds like he is our #1 TE now. So, I like it from that aspect as well.

I am still concerned about the OL, they really needed to sign Steussie. Oh well, we'll see what happens. And, although I have my questions about Lett and Chester... their cap numbers aren't that bad and they're not over the hill yet. I mean the defense finished last year at 24, so any improvement is welcome and I don't think it's too unrealistic to expect the defense to quickly jump into the top 12 overall with the additions of Rhodes and the new defensive players.

I'm not in full smack mode, but I am curious to see what happens with KC. There are a lot of holes right now. From a competitive aspect, I hope KC makes some moves simply b/c it will make the AFC West a stronger division.

I still say, sign Dilfer then pick up Holmes if you can get him fairly cheap. Use the #12 on your RBoTF and grap Tui or Weinke in the 3rd round. Then again, what do I know.

All I do know is that Denver is looking pretty solid for 2001 and all of the perceived "tough" games outside of the conference are at Denver. Yippee!

4.2mil signing bonus, prorated over 6 years = 700k per season. Not bad at all for a PB vet.

Sure, he's way past his prime, but he does know Robinson's system... and he can provide veteran leadership now that James "I'll retire, I swear it!" Hasty is gone.

Hey Brad,
I like the Crockett move as well. He's Hasty's age and provides plenty of leadership and half the price James would have cost to retain.

I'm envious of the Kennison signing as well. Denver hasn't thrown a lot of 3 wr sets out in the past but perhaps that was due to personnel. Even if they don't, they now have good depth for Smith & Mac.

I like your 1st & 3rd round predictions for us as well. Why bother responding to your topics, we generally agree. :)

Maybe you should post something really controversial sometime.... :)

That's true, but what is cap number for 2001? It can't just be his bonus. Anyway, it's not that bad a deal.

KC was seriously pursuing Kennison, so now that he's in Denver I'm waiting to hear how much he sucks and how he's a journeyman underachiever. :-)

I read that Griese is about to sign for 7 years and $42M... that's almost Warner money. I think it's kinda high, b/c I figured he would sign on for about $4-$5M a year. I haven't seen what his actual cap number for 2001 would look like, but I'll bet most of the money is backloaded with a $6m bonus or something.

And, even though he never talked with KC, I'm waiting to hear how Peterson "drove up the price" Denver pays for Griese.

Glad the planet is back up - it looks great.

That 7 year, 6mil/per contract makes him the highest paid donkey QB in the franchise's history!

Brian 60% Griese will pull in more coinage than even horse-face did? Wow. He's a good young QB - but that's kind of a risky contract for a kid who has suffered FOUR shoulder injuries in his two years, don't you think?

Yeah, I kinda do think that's a risk, but nothing has been announced, so we don't know if it's really backloaded or not.

Since quality QBs are scarce, you gotta pay the guys you want to keep a li'l more than you need to sometimes.

Thanks for Crockett ... I think. He is a bit long in the tooth, but the secondary needed some veteran leadership and he can provide it. Hopefully they back-loaded his contract ... 6 years for a 34 year-old CB seems a bit steep. let's hope Carl didn't blow this one.

As far as Kennision goes, he's a good pickup for your system. He would've worked well here, but I still have issues with his hands (he seems to develop the dropsies every once in a while). Good luck with him.

Oh yeah, and thank Bowlen for taking Chester ... that's 30 free yards for us twice a year! ;)

~~Feels better about the secondary now.

"let's hope Carl didn't blow this one."

I too hope he doesn't blow this one. Without inviting Kenny boy in here to $hit all over this, could someone explain exactly how it would be blown? Someone said $700 k per year - is that the cap hit if he is released or is the remainder of the salary the hit?

No matter the hit - we HAD to have a veteran leader back to support the rooks.

When I heard about him signing, it was said that "terms were not disclosed" although the info always leaks out. I've gotta feeling that it was a modest signing bonus, smallish salary and a huge, back-loaded roster bonus in like 3-4 years or so. I can't see the guy staying for all 6. I just hope this means that Gray's worthless a$$ is on its way out the door.

Either way, I agree ... the Chiefs got the veteran leadership they needed.

Lets see.... Crockrat is in KC and Chester http://www.raiderfans.com/darkside/mc.gif is in Denver... I'd say KC got the best of that deal...

Good they stayed in the West... I'd miss those offside and pass interference penalties...

Walker and Kennison were good signings, but the Chet and Lett Show???... You bat .500 between those two, consider yourself blessed...

2 years ago: Dale Carter

Last year: Pittman & Archambeau

This year: Lett, McGlutton & Kennison.

Not to mention: the impending signing of Griese will assure the Donx won't be Super Bowl contenders for the next 7 years.

Ahhhhhh, nothing like news of The Rat's FA miscues to brighten a rainy, gloomy Michigan April day!

Thanks, Brad. :)

I wanted a veteran shepherd for our rookies. Certainly Crockett did not leap to mind. I did not think much of him as a Bronco and I have no reason to believe that a different color uniform is going to make him a better player, but all I wanted was some veteran leadership. He might be able to provide that.

Not overwhelmed with joy, but got what he asked for.

KC was seriously pursuing Kennison, so now that he's in Denver I'm waiting to hear how much he sucks and how he's a journeyman underachiever. :-)

Why wait to hear it, when can wait a little longer and see it? Kennison is fast, 'tis true. But he hasn't caught anything coming his way for years. Not a lot of output since his first season for an 18th overall pick.

04-06-2001, 02:20 PM
Kennison couldn't cut it with a crappy Rams team, a crappy Saints team, and a really crappy bears team.
This is the best signing Carl never made.

Here's a bit more detail on the Crockett contract...

"Jay Glazer of CBS Sports and the Pro Football News and Injury Report has informed NFLtalk that the six-year deal signed by cornerback Ray Crockett with the Chiefs today is, for all intents and purposes, a two-year deal. The first two years of the deal total $4.25 million and includes a signing bonus of $2.5 million. The length of the deal is meant simply to spread out the hit of the signing bonus on the salary cap."

Shakes... that's simply a bitter response. He had an incredible rookie year. The WR generally is only as good as the freaking guy throwing the football.

Tony Banks, two guys named Billy Joe and McNowan...

I think I'll reserve judgement on Kennison until after the 16th game of the 2001 season.

04-06-2001, 05:11 PM
So then, Brad, who's gonna throw the ball after Griese goes down in week, i'm gonna guess, 3 this year?

Gus is gone, who will it be this year?

Read the news... Gus resigned.

04-06-2001, 05:38 PM
Guess that narrows it down a bit .
