I had no idea that all of the Dems Presidential losses over the last 20 years had one person running all of their campaigns... Bob Shrum.

2004: John Kerry
2000: Al Gore
1992: Bob Kerrey (lost to Clinton in the primary)
1988: Michael Dukakis
1988: Richard Gephart (lost to Dukakis in the primary)

The only campaigns he didn't touch in the last 20 years were Clinton's winning campaigns in 1992 and 1996.

I'd say this qualifies as a trend.

The good news is that someone wised up and figured out that he's 0-7 Presidential campaigns and told him to stay the eff away from the campaigns in 2008.

In fairness to him, if Nader doesn't run in 2000, he wins that one.

And if that Texas maverick whose name I'm forgetting doesn't run in '92, it's highly questionable whether Clinton beats BushDaddy.

Perot...

And while that's very likely true... it says a great deal that all 3 of those General Election losses were by candidates who failed miserably to connect with the people. And each had massively poor strategic campaign choices at the center of them.

Kerry's flacid response to the Swift Boats story.
Gore's decision to avoid Clinton like the plague
Dukakis' I'm not weak on defense, I ride in a tank photo-op

I've heard his name mentioned, but I hadn't heard about the "curse".

How else could John Kerry have run such an astute campaign?

I don't think you can blame Shrum for the Kerry campaign.

As unpopular as Bush was, you can't defeat a President during wartime. It's never happened before, and Kerry wasn't the candidate to break that trend.

Sounds like he's due.

I think that it would've happened in 1968 if LBJ had the guts to run again. Might've happened in 52 also with Truman.

Might've happened in 2004 but it didn't, so.

Nice thread, I didn't know about this Shrum guy.

Is he somehow related to Carl Peterson?

I've got sympathy for Shrum. It's tough being a salesman for an inferior product. :p

I thought the connection was going to be that these are all tin foil hat windbags that can't win a national election.

ooops.
