Pilot must have had a lot of hours. It had to be second nature for him to use air speed as his friend.

I was flying with an "old salt" copter pilot in the Navy, when we lost a tail rotor. That is usually all she wrote, story over.

However, he was quick enough, before the fuselage made its first full turn to get the air speed up to max. We landed at over a hundred knots, but we made it.

you would think on final approach he would have known immediately his control surfaces were minimal and he wasn't getting typical rudder responses.

Incredible feat!
