Missing woman reward now $20,000
By LAURA BAUER
The Kansas City Star

Investigators today are going through sex offender registries and have found dozens who live in this area. They also are following leads that come in and continue to look for a person of interest who was seen at the store about the same time as Kelsey Smith.

Smith, a recent Shawnee Mission West High School graduate, has been missing since Saturday evening when she didn’t return home from running an errand at the Target at 97th Street and Quivira Road. Enhanced surveillance video shows someone running up behind Kelsey as she was getting in her car. The individual pushed Kelsey inside.

Smith’s family announced today that a reward for information in the case has been increased to $20,000 through donations.

As investigators keep up with leads in the case, her parents are making the rounds with the national media today.

The goal, said dad Greg Smith, is to make sure everyone knows his daughter is still out there somewhere.

“Anybody that will let me get on the air and put my daughter’s face out there, that’s great,” Smith said this morning. “Someone knows something.”

Friends are canvassing the area around Target and the Oak Park Mall with fliers again today, wanting to saturate Johnson County with pictures of Kelsey.

Greg Smith said the enhanced surveillance video only confirms what family has thought from the beginning.

“From the moment we heard her car turned west instead of east, I knew somebody had her,” Smith said, referring to tape that shows Kelsey’s car turning left out of Target. If she were headed home she would have turned right.

Smith said the family is even more determined to find his daughter and keep her face and name in the news.

“We’re going to bring you home Kelsey,” he said. “We’re bringing you home, baby.”

White girls are good at getting abducted.

My wife is freaking out because we're right down the street and she goes to the mall all the time. I told her to get a tan.

I'm really surprised that no one saw anything. She was abducted at Target at 7pm - it's still light then and that's a busy area.

The car was found by Macy's - I'm surprised they don't have security footage of when the car was ditched there. As that was previously a Jones store, I'm sure they had surveillance everywhere...

Police just held a 2nd press conference - wanting the public to help ID a dark mid-70's chevy pickup, no liscense plate visable.
Also want to talk to a white man, about 170 lbs, dark hair, 3 hair goatee, dark baggie shorts, too-big white shirt, tennis shoes. (Looks like a canteen punk to me.)

This has been a heartbreaking day. Turns out this young woman lives close to me, was friends with a coworker, and worked for someone I know. I am praying they find her safe and soon. Thank God for cameras.

It looks like she had not updated her MySpace very much. I'm betting she had a Facebook but I've not been able to locate one yet. There are a number of pages in her honor now. Reading some of the kid's entries about her is so sad. They seem hopeful but so scared.

I know - I hope they find her alive. My gut is telling me they won't though... She dissappeared just after 7PM, the last ping was at 7:56, her car was dropped off at Oak Park at 9:12. That time line would suggest just enough time to drive from Oak Park to Longview, dump a body and drive back to get rid of the car. I really hope I'm wrong.

Do any of the intersections around the mall have traffic cams? I would assume they've already checked the footage if they do but you never know...

An hour from disappearance to last ping, and an hour from last ping back to Macy's. It only takes about 30 minutes to drive between 150 and Byars/Foodlane to the mall. That leaves 30 minutes to kill her, turn off the phone, 30 minutes to hide the body, and drive back. I hope she is alive, but it doesn't sound good.

It's damn hard to be the father of two daughters in today's world. When it's not safe for an 18 year old woman to go to Target in broad daylight it begins to make you feel like there's nothing you can do to fully protect your kids. I'd like a shot at this guy before the police find him.

Fox says she was found at Raytown Rd. and Highgrove. That is less than a mile from where I grew up.

There are bike/jogging trails that run through there, and Raytown rd. actually stops, and a service road to some ball fields continues about a mile back. At 8pm with no traffic and no lights, that would be the worst place for a victim to be alone with an attacker.

I have a little girl also, and I can't even imagine. :shake: At least there were a lot of cameras around for this girl to make a good plot for the viewers to follow. I read the paper every day and don't recall hearing anything about the Belton girl missing from a month ago. With the camera angles and cell pings this murder was actually "interesting" enough for the media to produce a good show for the public and it got a lot of attention.

Lucky for him he has no truck, is 6'6", and his little peach fuzz sorry excuse for a goatee is barely visable at close ranges, and would no way show up in a grainy video.

Kelsey Smith Found Dead: Police ID Suspect, May Face Death Penalty
By Jack Ryan
Jun 6, 2007

Kelsey Smith has been confirmed dead and police now have an ID on Kelsey Smith's abductor. Police found the body Kelsey Smith in a shallow creek 20 miles east of the Target Store at about 3:10 PM EST.

Police have ID'd Kelsey Smith's abductor, but have not released a name. He lives 2 miles from where Kelsey's body was found. The suspect crossed state lines from Missouri into Kansas and the suspect will now be up for the death penalty in Kansas.

Police were searching an area heavily after tracking the pings from Kelsey Smith's cell phone. Kelsey Smith disappeared on Saturday around 7PM.

Whoever had Kelsey Smith, or her cell phone, was on the move because it had pinged from the three different locations.

Police were heavily searching the last place that Kelsey's cell pinged, which is about 20 miles east of the Target store that Kelsey went missing from, and were working on numerous leads to try and find her.

Kelsey's family had set up a website for anyone who was interested in helping: www.findkelsey.com

Anyone with information regarding the case is being asked to call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS, or (913)327-5638.

Well I think it's a damn shame that the Kara Kopetsky case has been all but ignored. You have to wonder if Kara had the type of connections that Kelsey had then maybe they would know the fate of their daughter.

Very good point. I wasnt even aware she was missing until this came up.

Way too many coincidences here. The suspect lives close to Belton. Kara is 17 and about Kelsey's build. They both disappear within 4 weeks of each other.

Local people probably have never heard of Kara and yet Kelsey was on the national news. I know I've never seen a flyer for Kara.

Ive worked and lived in JoCoKS....if it doesnt happen in JoCo it hasnt happened....its a mindset....poor lil JoCo girl....big bad man took her...

This whole situation pisses me off....

Its a goddamn shame that this has to happen to anyone, wherever they live...

And to any of you fockers like this jagoff that did this, be a real man, dont blindside some poor 18 yo woman, PM me, we will go a couple rounds first....... :shake:

Of course the fact that there was video SHOWING Kelsey being taken made it crystal clear what happened to her. Whereas Kara seems to have vanished into thin air.

Bull shit. I can guarantee you if they had a video of Kara being taken and if Kara's father was a former cop her story would have been a national one too even if she's from Belton or MO.

I think the sad irony here is if Kara's disappearance had been seriously investigated as a kidnap vs. a runaway then Kelsey might not have met this fate.

I cant believe Im stooping to your level...

Well if these two cases are related, maybe Smiths father having all these connections will solve BOTH missing womens case?

So in a roundabout way, the special attention may pay off....

Would it have kept Smith from getting murder?....no one knows

Not really. He was asserting it was made an issue because it happened in JOCO. I'm saying the JOCO police took it seriously because they had the video and her dad was one of them. NOTbecause they are JOCO police.

To assume it was because she was from JOCO is wrong. She had some connections that many crime victims do not.

Tough to deal with, but I agree. Too often these things aren't isolated incidents.

That's the whole thing. I have two daughters, 14 and 5.

I also had a niece who was abducted, likely raped, and killed. I say she was "likely raped" because her remains were found years later, and there was no evidence remaining.

She'd have probably had her own kids by now. I guess I won't meet them at our next family reunion.

This is so sad. My prayers go out to the family.

My daughter will be 12 this year. I won't even let my kids go into another aisle in the store when they are with me. It is going to get tougher and tougher as they get older to let go of that protective leash I have on them now.

I hope they find that evil **** and he gets the punishment he deserves.

Whoops. My bad. I typed the wrong word in my fit of anger. She was my cousin, not my niece. There's a difference, and I don't want to be called on it later if it goes beyond this. The girl (her name was Tiffany) was my cousin.
