Van Halen, Roth to announce reunion tour
Original singer will join rock supergroup for 50 U.S. dates

Aug. 7: Van Halen is set to announce a 50-date reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth that will begin in October. MSNBC.com's Dara Brown reports.

Updated: 2 hours, 38 minutes ago
NASHVILLE - Van Halen will announce a 50-date American reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth during a news conference in Hollywood next week, sources said.

The arena trek will begin in early October.

Roth, who split from the rock group in the mid-1980s in hopes of solo stardom, will reunite with co-founders Eddie Van Halen on guitar and brother Alex Van Halen on drums. Eddie’s teenage son Wolfgang will sub for Michael Anthony on bass.

A proposed summer amphitheater tour by the group never got off the ground, with Eddie Van Halen entering a rehabilitation facility for undisclosed reasons in March.

In the months since, the guitarist has been seen publicly looking healthy and fit.

Van Halen last toured in 2004, with Roth’s replacement, vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Really, is anyone going to fall for this again? Until they actually show up on stage somewhere and play a damn song together I'm just not going to believe it.

I'd like to see them again but from what I hear of David live, he really has lost alot - hopefully he can pull it off. I don't expect him to be 20 again, but I owuld hope he sounds better than Roger Daltry does right about now.

My sentiments exactly. And even after that first show, all it would take is one wrong look from any of them to make the whole thing blow up again.

Egomanical assclowns. I think I'll stick with my CDs and memories of seeing Van Hagar 20 years.

I never understood all the fuss about Sammy. He covered DLR's stuff just fine. And had the added benefit of not being a complete self-absorbed dick. Like Van Halen needs another one of those.

I think the Hagar stuff has a cleaner studio sound which appealed to some. I always like the Roth stuff more because it was raw and had a real rock feeling.

The thing with me was I was old school Sammy i.e. Montrose and his early solo work as well as a freshman in high school when VH came on the scene so I just never was impressed with VanHagar and don't own anything by them except a few songs on the greatest hits compilation. As for VH I have everything.

This just in...Priest Holmes will also be starting at Running Back, and Willie Roaf is coming out of retirement...

...both of those scenarios are more likely than VH making it through a 50 city tour.

...but, I'll buy the damn ticket. I'm a sucker, what can I say.

I won't be buying a ticket, and I'm a HUGE VH fan. Saw the reunion with Sammy... even saw VH3 tour. However, the only time I've ever seen DLR in concert was the tandem concert he did with Hagar a few years ago.

I've always been a bigger fan of the original VH lineup, so I was more excited about seeing DLR than Hagar. I'm glad Hagar played first. I left the DLR section after four songs. He sucked total balls. It was genuinely awful.

Add that to the fact that Michael Anthony will not be joining the band... and it just ain't VH.

I like the Hagar era... it was more "made for radio". I don't like it when Hagar tries singing original VH tunes though... makes my skin crawl.

The Roth era was total greatness though, just a totally different experience. I like both versions, but I'm more on the side of the original flavor.

That being said though... it just will not be right seeing Dave, Eddie, Alex and... Wolfgang? I wish they could do this with Michael Anthony - his harmonies will be missed.

Basically, because Eddie and Sammy are fighting... MA took Sammy's side, then toured with Sammy... Eddie's pissed, so they didn't want him back.

The more this soap opera goes on, the more I begin to dislike Eddie. Really unfortunate, too... I used to really like them all.

Actually, take the "Van Halen" out of VH3 and I enjoyed the music. I've always liked it when Eddie was allowed to riff a little more, and that was one of the big VH3 critiques. I thought Cherone had great stage presence, at least in Chicago.

That said... even with EVH, AVH and Michael Anthony... it just was VH.

Probably because he finally quit kissing Eddie's ass.

I suspect that's the same reason Don Felder's got bounced from the Eagles, except the asses in question there are Henley and Frye.

I remember hearing something about that tour, but was it a VH tour, just with both men fronting different parts of the show, or were they both performing solo sets? As VH goes, I vastly prefer the DLR era, but as solo artists, Sammy blows Dave away. That said, I've heard too many horror stories about the decline of DLR, how his voice is a ghost of what it once was, so I doubt that I'll be exactly camping for tickets.

I suspect that's the same reason Don Felder's got bounced from the Eagles, except the asses in question there are Henley and Frye.I heard that it's related to the rift between Eddie and Sammy, because Michael and Sammy became great friends, and Michael thought it would be disloyal to Sammy, who he counted a closer friend than Eddie, to stay on with VH. And I've also heard that he was getting tired of the rigamarole of touring and wanted to spend more time with his family. It may be a combination of both, but I don't think he and Eddie are really on all that bad of terms.

When you think about it, though, with Wolfie on the bass, he's a Van Halen by blood, so they're actually more VH than they've ever been!

Taking the wait and see approach.. I prefer Hagar and Anthony over the Male ass pounder and Wolfgang...

If they can survive and make Rocklahoma in 08 or come close to OKC, then I might pony up and go see them.. But watching DLR for 2 hours might make me dry heave. But would love to see EVH and AVH though.....

As bad as those live recordings sound, remember those are basically camcorder sound, so it likely sounds quite a bit better actually being there. For what it was, his voice wasn't sounding too awfully shabby. He is certainly looking a lot healthier than he did toward the end of the 90s. Let's hope the same is true of Eddie, who was looking really bad for awhile there!

It was not a VH tour. Both were doing solo sets. Sammy had the Red Rockers there and the Waborita girls, etc... did quite a bit of his solo stuff and a good selection of his VH stuff. Michael Anthony made an appearance on a couple of numbers.

DLR performed ONLY classic VH songs. And sucked doing it. Off key, didn't engage the audience, etc.

I don't know, but a couple of days ago, they had edited the picture on Van Halen I on the van halen site to omit Anthony, and replaced it with a picture of Wolfgang, and removed entirely the cover picture from Women and Children First. They have since switched it back, but that dude is never going to be back in the band.
