Prog metal, prog rock, whatever. I figured this should be given it's own thread, rather than attempting to contain it in the dream theater fans thread.

I'm more of an old school mainstream prog fan:

Rush
Kansas
King Crimson
Genesis
Yes
Marillion
Queensryche
Kings X
Dream Theater

I would even say System of a Down borders along prog lines just a little.

Alias Eye
Spock's Beard
Jadis

and alot of the old school as well.

Yeah Spock's Beard! Their drummer Nick D'Virgilio did some tracks for Genesis in Phil's place on Calling all stations after he left in 1995.

I think that even though they are more mainstream the different influences in their music make them prog. Especially with all the middle-eastern infleunces in their sound.

Indeed.. every time I post I recall a bunch more that I forgot to mention. Green Carnation, for instance. I kept meaning to bring them up.

What do you think of Dan Swano's work with Nightingale?

Mr Luzcious
08-16-2007, 10:11 PM
Oh and Evergrey! I associate them with Riverside for some reason.. I think I heard both of them for the first time in a short amount of time. So I knew I was missing it.. but couldn't remember what they were called.

Reaper16

Riverside was one I probably should have mentioned.

I haven't heard the Nightingale stuff in years, and I can't find my mp3s for some reason. I think that's the reason why. I remember liking the material... I'll need to give the material a fresh listen when I reacquire it.

Yeah, its not great, but I enjoy it. Its my only exposure to Swano so far; I'll have to look into Moontower.

Rush
Kansas
Dream Theater
Symphony X
Queensryche
Dragonland
Kamelot
OSI
LTE
POS

There is one band that a lot of people seem to like, and I can't fathom why (several on here have mentioned them, too), because after hearing pretty much their entire catalogue, I can honestly say that I can't think of a band out there with as much talent, but as lifeless and monumentally boring as ... Spock's Beard!

I guess I'm too old to know what "prog" is.

That's ok. I'm used to being old.

OSI

I am very interested in OSI, but they are very hard to come by!

Someday I hope to share in your favortism of them.

I don't get the Spocks Beard either.

I sort of like Transatlantic though, another Neil Morse project. But that one has Portnoy in it.

My favorite frog band is Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, even though technically, Kermit isn't in the band.

"Prog" I'm guessing what us old hippies called in 70s Progressive Rock.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock

So with that....

Pink Floyd from "Darkside of the Moon" forward
Genesis
Rush
ELP
YES
Kansas

On the Jazz Fusion side
Jeff Beck (solo work) 1975 on "Blow By Blow "
Weather Report
Chick Corea and Return to Forever

NEO PROG... don't really have any.

Portnoy is also in OSI and LTE. Although not a prog band, Portnoy and Morse also teamed up for a Beatles cover project called Yellow Matter Custard. I haven't heard it, but given that it also includes Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big) and Matt Bissonette (David Lee Roth, Joe Satriani), and boasts an impressive song list, I'd like to hear it one of these days!

If you like Dan Swano, check out Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Star One project. Swano (along with Russell Allen, Damian Wilson, and the Jansen sisters) is one of the vocalists on that album (there are studio and live versions of the album). Basically, it's Ayreon taken to a new level. Great stuff!

I thought I remembered seeing something about them coming to St. Louis (Pops, in Sauget, IL, actually), but now I'm not seeing any US dates on their remaining schedule, so it must have already come and gone. Still, I saw them back in '03 opening for Blind Guardian, and they put on a great live show. I had my picture taken with bassist Mike Lepond.

I found a new band that is fairly interesting.

Pure Reason Revolution

Check them out here: http://www.last.fm/music/Pure+Reason+Revolution/The+Dark+Third

A couple of the songs on The Dark Third you can listen to in their entirety.
