Chiefs awful right now
By JASON WHITLOCK
Not a good look. Not at all. The Chiefs, a cable TV hit, have been miserable throughout the preseason, and Thursday night they flirted with embarrassing in a 30-7 loss to the Saints.

“They took the stick out and beat us over the head with it,” acknowledged coach Herm Edwards.

Kansas City’s retooled defense, the alleged strength of the team, failed to force a first-half punt in the exhibition game. The Saints ran the ball with relative ease, picking up 72 yards in 15 carries running mostly behind backup left tackle Zach Strief and right at Jared Allen. The Saints, however, found it easiest to travel through the air, completing 20 of 22 first-half passes for 200 yards and one touchdown.

The entire opening 30 minutes appeared to be played inside the Kansas City red zone.

The only thing worse than the Kansas City defense was the Kansas City offense. The Chiefs’ No. 1 unit struggled in nearly every phase — blocking, passing and catching. Kansas City was shut out 13-0 in the first half and held to five first downs (two by penalty).

Michael Bennett ran pretty effectively, which only accentuated the glaring shortcoming that is KC’s passing game. Starter Brodie Croyle completed just three of 14 passes before halftime.

It’s difficult to blame everything on Croyle. His pass protection was shaky, and his receivers dropped a couple of passes. All in all, Damon Huard had a solid night in his bid to be the starter in the season opener at Houston. Even though Huard has yet to lead the Chiefs on a touchdown drive and didn’t play Thursday night, you have to figure Edwards has no choice but to start the veteran at the beginning of the season.

Croyle has failed to win the job. He orchestrated KC’s lone TD drive in three preseason games (except for Jeff Terrell’s in garbage time Thursday), but he’s done little else.

“He struggled some, but he didn’t get any help either,” Edwards said.

The problem for the Chiefs is Larry Johnson’s return doesn’t fix this problem. Again, Bennett gave the Chiefs the threat of a running game. Nope, with Damion McIntosh injured, the Chiefs don’t have a left tackle. The Saints had their way with replacement Will Svitek.

Forgive me, there’s no individual player to blame.

“Offensively, we just can’t get anything going,” Edwards said at halftime.

It’s a bit early for any major criticism, but it’s not too early to be concerned about the play calling of offensive coordinator Mike Solari. Yes, it’s preseason football. Losing in the preseason is no big deal.

But it’s never too early to begin the process of building confidence, especially when the last time you played a real football game your offense was destroyed by an Indianapolis defense that was a league-wide laughingstock.

No team in the league needed to score exhibition points more than Kansas City. The Chiefs have a rebuilt offensive line, a new quarterback, a first-round rookie receiver and a second-year offensive coordinator who is expected to blossom.

Add it all together and we might witness the worst offense in the league and a defense that still looks awfully soft.

Not a good look. The HBO “Hard Knocks” camera, even with an ample editing assist from Carl Peterson and his paid media manipulators, will have a hard time making these Chiefs look pretty. Maybe the “Hard Knocks” crew will turn the sound down this week.

Chief’s fans booed Croyle and the first-team offense. Chiefs’ fans cheered when Casey Printers opened at quarterback in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs are showing all the signs of being a bad football team, and Chiefs fans aren’t inclined to demonstrate much patience.

They’re not wrong. This team should be better. The performance of the defense is most disappointing. Thursday night Jarrad Page, Jared Allen, Napoleon Harris and Derrick Johnson gave the Chiefs very little.

Get ready for a long year.

It was dreadful game to watch, but come on Jwhit, Allen was a beast. Two sacks and an int.

I think he expected a solid Defense, and a offense that can move the ball even if a little. WE have good offensive players. Tony G, Bennett. Kennison, Bowe. Yet our Oline is so horrible none of that matters.

Understandable, but booing your QBotF who is just beginning his career is just stupid. The kid is going to have ups and downs. On top of all that, it's preseason.

I wasn't there, so the fans might have been booing the playcalling or anything else, but Whitlock makes it sound like they were specifically booing Croyle.

Yeah, I didn't see the booing part of the game, must have been putting the kid to bed at that time. I would think the booing would be just a general "the offense sucks" boo, rather than directed at one player. I could be wrong, but that would be my guess.

That is my take as well. The only two bright points for the defense were two stops on 4th and 1 that would have been FG's if this had been a regular season game instead of a pre-season game. It would have been 19-0 at half with no stops for the defense.

And in their first quarter of work last week against the fish, it was not any better. 3 dropped passes by the fins on their 1st possession, then they ripped us the rest of the quarter. Both by land and air. Brown had 55 yards rushing, give or take a couple, and Green was able to easily complete passes against the secondary.

Starting defense didn't look solid at all in either game.

This is what I got out of the whole situation with the Defense

Tank is wayyyy better than Boone or Edwards (DL)

Boone is a gamer tho

Edwards (DL) was a ghost

Turk was hardly heard from

Hali had some good stops in the running game but I don't recall seeing him in the backfield

DJ was all over the field

Donnie and Napoleon had their name called several times

JA was a monster

Patterson is a sure tackler guy is money on the field...didn't really hear his name much though until we started running some zone D with Bell out in coverage getting beat and Patterson flying in for the tackle

Don't remember seeing Brackenridge

Phinese had his name called a few times

Key Fox and Scanlon are teh bomb!

ALSO remember we are running mostly base defenses nothing special....there are players that are trying to make this team and the coaching staff needs to see them work and that is all that it is about not winning and losing...we are not putting all of our best players out there at the same time either...just the ones the coaching staff has elevated to 1st string based upon practice and previous game film...some will decline and be replaced

Svitek looked awful if he had just stalled his man 1 sec more Croyle would have hag a better night

Parker is still having a bad case of the dropsies I hope Cippio is as good in the NFL as he was in the AFL...although I don't think he played

Kennison was a no show in the game either

I'm not alarmed but I think this game definitely showed who deserves a roster spot and who deserves to be kicked to the curb

Second Croyle is not even close to being the QBotF if he keeps playing like he did last night.

Judging from what I've heard on the webcast between the dropped passes and horrible offensive line Peyton Manning wouldn't have looked to good in there either.

Carl Peterson is an idiot for (one of many reasons) not developing a QB when Montana was getting ready to retire and the qbotf would have had a good o-line and a second to none mentor at his disposal.

No question the oline is bad but when Croyle did have time he wasn't even closing to completing the pass.

I 99% blame Herm and Solari for our shitty offense. We have good offensive players yet we stink. These guys have no idea how to run a NFL offense.

Great take. Fatlock and his "Defense failed to force a punt in the first half" blah blah blah, havea canoli.

I would rather see a defense be facing a team that is 1st a goal from their 5 yard line and stuff them 4 times in a row over a punt situation. They weren't great, but they weren't horrible either. There were also a lot of non-starters playing for the defense half way through the secon quarter.

I haven't seen too many good things happen when the Chiefs promote in house coaches. Maybe they should give that a rest...forever.

I'm ready for a long season and hope Croyle makes it through alive, well and refined as a QB. The bright side is that if he can pull through a season with a terrible o-line, stone hands, what's a first down? Sammie and can't out run the CBs anymore Kennison it should all be easier from there on out.

ya what cracks me up about that whole analogy is that if it were the end of the game they would have gone for it and we have three 4th and goal stops...preseason is all about situational game playing Miami and New Orleans were playing the "we need a TD and it's the 4th quarter" offense and we stuffed em even if they went for a FG it's not 100% they get one I'd rather give up 3 than 6 ...

I think it is sorry. I never went to games growing up, so wasn't there when the stadium was half full of die hard football fans, but my take on Arrowhead is that 50% of the fans don't know a damn thing about football. They are a wine a cheese crowd that like to have fun and can afford the Arrowhead experience. Just like KC is a great BBQ town but 50% of the citizens don't know a damn think about BBQing, they just enjoy the final product. So you have 50% of the fans that are clueless, but they want to enjoy the final product. How much do they want to enjoy it? Two tickets can run you $150, parking another $25, and anywhere from $25-50 on drinks and eats. There are no discounts for preseason games, so people are paying $225 for a product, and the product isn't the quality that they expected/deserve.

I will probably piss some people off here, but I don't think that ANYBODY who understands football and has ever played a season of organized sports would boo Croyle last night.

Outside of Philly I can't think of any place that's tougher on their QB than KC. We eat our young here if they don't measure up. And if he can't handle being booed here... well he ain't gonna make it then. :shake:

While true, the problem I see with the starting defense is this... we are playing bend and don't break... and I don't think that fits very well with the philosophy of "playing for field position". If we truely are going to try and win football games with a 3 and out type of offense, then we must 3 and out with the defense as well to hold serve. That is what the Bears did 2 years ago with their cover 2 scheme... not bend and don't break.
