View Full Version : Satellite or Cable?
05-17-2001, 11:08 AM
I was just kind of curious how many posters on this BB have a satellite hookup instead of cable. The sports coverage on satellite is incredible especially if you have an interest in more than one sport like BD does. Of course jimmyrigging an H card is the ultimate way to go with the 6 channels of streaming porn and all the free PPV events. Of course BD would know nothing about how to do that.
Especially likes the Ultimate Fighting as well as all the motorcycle racing.
05-17-2001, 11:10 AM
I'd love to have one of those cards...
05-17-2001, 11:14 AM
Don't have cable available in my area.
I did have a modified H card, since black sunday I've been without it. Of course, I was just using it for testing purposes, not home entertainment, because that would be wrong ;) .
I have dish network now, I like the way it's set up better than DTV, but I can't get NFL Ticket on it. Hafta go somewhere else to watch the games, or do some more "testing".
this is a test, this is only a test...
05-17-2001, 11:15 AM
looking for good ol' letter "H" from the letter people. supposedly there are some new ways around the new cards, but you have to buy the minimum subscript. for it to work...
BD, make sure your "friend" doesn't plug in his phone line.
05-17-2001, 11:17 AM
I have a dish, but the old lady is afraid I'd never leave the house if we had a "H" card.
She's probably right.
05-17-2001, 11:19 AM
I had cable then made the switch to satellite. WELL WORTH IT. Now, I get many more channels for a lot less money.
Later, I switch from Dish Network to Direct TV. I would definitely recommend Direct TV over Dish Network for many reasons, especially NFL Sunday Ticket and the customer service.
05-17-2001, 11:43 AM
What I have heard is that you can still use that Black Sunday H card for continued testing. You need a bootloader and emulator and one full time dedicated computer. BD is assuming that you already have programmer. Once this is set up there is no need for reprogramming. The only time you will lose it is if they retire your card. This is better than the constant reprogramming of the HU cards.
That's what I have heard anyway.
05-17-2001, 11:47 AM
Depend, if you have one or two TVs then Sattilite would be ok but more than that, cable is better (cheaper)
05-17-2001, 11:54 AM
Good point Russ. I think it is approx. $15 extra to have another TV connection.
05-17-2001, 12:45 PM
I have both. I pay $40 a month for cable (w/ hbo) and cable modem. Since I use the satellite for testing, that is no charge to me. I also need to figure out how to use Tivo in "test" mode even though I have a lifetime subscription. I need to put another HD in my Tivo receiver.
05-17-2001, 12:46 PM
Dish, beyond question.
The picture is a 100% better. I have more choices. The service is better. The only folks ruder than the counter people at the post office are our local cable support people. And it's actually a little cheaper.
Russ, my 2nd set only costs $4.99.
Question: What's this 'H' card you guys are talking about?
05-17-2001, 12:54 PM
Upgrading to satellite when I move - gotta have the NFL Sunday Ticket thing. Don't really care about anything else.
I will NEVER be forced to watch another Bears game while listening to the Chiefs over the internet.
05-17-2001, 01:01 PM
H cards were the original Direct TV access cards. They now use an HU card.
05-17-2001, 01:06 PM
My Dish Net. gets better signal and picture than my cable does, Except for stormy weather. As for the price of NFL Tickett....I don't get to watch that much football as others do....I bought the KC Channels on Dish since I live in Kentucky and get to watch all the Chiefs games for 5.99 per month !:D

Is that Dish Network or Direct TV?
05-17-2001, 01:34 PM
Cable upstairs and cable & satellite in the basement. We're spending way to much on T.V.. I got a free dish for buying my Chiefs tickets through Ticket Master so I had it hooked up to the big screen in the basement. Their plan worked! They gave me a dish for free but now I'm paying them every month for service.
05-17-2001, 01:36 PM
I switched from cable to Directv for NFLDirect ticket. It's the only way I can see Chief's football.
Personally, I wish they would dump the stupid porno channels and use the bandwith for something worthwhile.
Something like FOOTBALL TV! If they can have a Golf channel, why not a football channel?
Stepping down off my soap box now...
05-17-2001, 01:40 PM
a chevy guy wants to dump the porno?
good god man, get your exhaust fixed....the CO is starting alter you sensibilities ;)
05-17-2001, 01:44 PM
OK, let's get this straight, are you bowtieguy because;
a) you like chevys
b) you like pasta
c) you like Paul Simon, or
d) you're in the Nation of Islam?
:) :) :)

Yep...Emulator, and comp with minimum of 32mb i believe, however I don't think all black sunday cards will work with the emulator. Also make a bootloader that works with some, but can still be hit by ECM's. I'll just have to decide if it's worth the jack for the comp and emulator.
Or thats what I've heard anyway...;)
05-17-2001, 01:48 PM
No one talks about 'this stuff' in relation to dishnetwork. Is their system more immune to 'efforts in education' or am I not looking in the right places?
05-17-2001, 01:52 PM
JC, you forgot...

I'm right there with you if it's Chevy, you won't catch me driving a Fix Or Repair Daily...
05-17-2001, 01:54 PM
From what I've heard...
Dish net testing only works with cards that have never been activated...then once testing is commenced, it has to be done daily...
continuing to hear a lot about this stuff..
I was all hot for satellite until I found out that I would have to use a broadcast antenna for CBS [Chiefs football], ABC [Dharma & Greg], NBC [ER] and FOX [Futurama, Simpsons, X-Files].
In addition, it would cost me a small fortune to hook both TVs up to a digital signal. I could not watch one station and record another, nor could I tape separate programs simultaneously on both TVs.
Besides, I just bought a cable modem and the cable company gouges you severely for broadband without television channels.
So, I stuck with cable.
Sniffed around the new dog, but stuck with the old one.

Lets not talk dirty....
I think you mean For Off Road Driving!!!
or First On Race Day....
silly rabit, trix are for kids.
05-17-2001, 01:57 PM
I drive Pontiac myself - its driving excitement. Actually, just can't pry myself away from that Supercharged 3800 in the Grand Prix GTP. Tho' if they actually produce the GTX, I'm there buddy. Essentially the same GTP body style, but with a Corvette powertrain and gearbox [finally, a stick], AWD and 18" ZR wheel/tires.
05-17-2001, 01:58 PM
I have not heard of anybody getting hit by ECMs once they have an emulator. Everyone I know that has one has never been hit by an ECM that worked. I thought you must have a bootloader for a black sunday card? You are saying no? R U sure.
Will have to check his sources.

Fu**ing Old Rebuilt Dodge...
I have heard one for PONTIAC, but I don't find it amusing...
05-17-2001, 02:01 PM
What have you got against porn? There are plenty of channels that are not even used and plenty of worthless channels like the oxygen network.
Would like the football channel though.
05-17-2001, 02:03 PM
Maybe I misspoke...
Emulator/Comp...not susecptible to ECM's
Bootloader...works with some Black Sunday cards, is susceptible to ECM's...
05-17-2001, 02:11 PM
I believe you are correct in that assessment. Virgin card with an emulator and H card is the best way to go.
Or so I've heard.
05-17-2001, 03:01 PM
I have digital cable and Im ready to switch.
There's more channels, but some channels are just duplicates of channels I already have. One channel I have 3 times--complete BS and they're charging me like 80 @ month for it.
05-17-2001, 03:12 PM
Satellite all the way. I switched a couple of years ago after getting tired of being treated like a leper by my local cable company. The service was terrible and and the people I delt with didn't seem to care if my cable worked or not.
Satellite has a much better picture and more choices at a lower cost. I bought Dish Network and would recommend it to anyone. My dish even quit on me just after the warrenty ran out and they sent me a new one free anyway ( I paid shipping cost - not much).
The only drawback to Dish vs Direct is that Dish can't get the NFL ticket, but I subscribe to the KC local channels for $4.99 a month and watch all the Chief's games :D
Love my satellite.
05-17-2001, 03:44 PM
Does Anybody know if Direct- TV will let you buy Local KC channels even if you are out of state?
I had NFL Sunday ticket last year, and that was nice except I will need to pay $180 to get it again this year.
Old Geezer said you could use Dish network to get local KC channels out of state. Hell --Ill switch from DTV to Dish to get the Chiefs games for $5.99/ Mo - - Whats that? $1.50 per game---Gee I don't know is that worth it?
05-17-2001, 04:59 PM
Dish Network will let you buy out of state channels. If you are like me however, and have an older system, you have to upgrade to a "Dish 500" system that receives signals from 2 satellites simultaneously to get some of the networks. I can only get NY and LA with my current system.
keg in kc
05-17-2001, 05:17 PM
I've always had cable and never had a reason to complain. No bad experiences with customer service, and since I live in KC I don't have to worry about what games are on...
The "other half" wanted to get digital cable, so, obviously, we have it now, and have absolutely no complaints about that either. More channels with more crap than I'll ever watch in the hour or two of TV watching I do per day.
Oh, and we have 6 TVs in the house (and I still don't watch much TV, go figure) so cable is kind of a must if we want all the TVs to work (and she does...). We, literally, have a TV in every room, except one. She works in TV though, so I guess she has a vested interest...
05-17-2001, 06:51 PM
To the best of my knowledge, Dish Network is the only satellite system presently offering local channels and I'm pretty sure you can pick the locals you want. They don't have all the locals covered yet, but they've got a pretty good selection.
This information might be a little outdated because I haven't really paid much attention to changes since I hooked up to the KC locals about a year ago. I have updated to the 500 system so I can get it all!!!
05-17-2001, 06:57 PM
I have the dish and would give up my 1st born before I could surrender my dish...NFL Season ticket is the great value in the world next to air conditioning...
I too heard those H cards were pretty magical until they got zapped...and zapped...and zapped...
05-17-2001, 07:03 PM
BIG DADDY has heard that you don't ever get zapped if you have an emulator. Just a thought.
05-17-2001, 07:16 PM
You can get locals on Direct TV, I am just not sure if you can get KC Channels if you live outside the area. I too would like to order them if it is available.
05-17-2001, 08:36 PM
I sure wish I'd known about being able to order local stations from other cities on Dishnet before I got Direct TV. As I only care about the Chiefs, having the KC channels would have been perfect (and cheaper). But alas, I've already ordered my Direct TV stuff. Guess I should have researched it more thoroughly.
But when I'm watching the games I want to see, I doubt if I'll care too much.

A "friend of a friend'' has just a bootloader and his "h" card is still up.
A birdy told me, for emulation you don't necessarily need a bootloader, just a computer and the necessary hardware in the computer to run it.
I heard emulation is extremely complicated.
I also heard the HU (card with the football players on it) are being hacked, however when Direct TV loops the signal, the cards are rendered useless until someone comes out with hardware that can unloop the card.
I perfer satalite, but never ever for anything other than testing purposes.
The Bad Guy
05-17-2001, 09:09 PM
I hit reply to soon...
The emulator can go down. I have read on message boards that there is a way they can zap the emulation stream, but it's very very very unlikely to happen.
The bootloader allows your black sunday access card to pass through the data stream. However since the hit on black sunday, there has only been script hashing, and no ECMS.
That friend I have really is clever to figure out all the ways to test these H cards.
05-18-2001, 10:53 AM
I figured we would have more satellite than cable with all of the sports nuts here. I have never seen anyone who has had a satellite EVER go back to cable again especially if they had one of those cards.
Knows both means that the satellite is usually the one that gets watched.
satellite was a godsend when I was in Wyoming, DTV was the best (sunday Ticket). It's the only way to go.
When we moved back to the KC area, I went with Cable for about 6 months, then switched back to satellite. #1 was the cost. I got alot more, and was able to have a package that truely fit my tastes, and the music channels. Besides which, my second reciever only costs me $1.99 per month.
05-18-2001, 11:10 AM
I'm....I mean this guy I know is looking for an "H" card that someone is tired of having zapped. He knows a guy who can fix it for consistant "testing"....similar to what it sounds like the "guys you know" have.
If you know someone who has an H card....my guy might be interested.
05-18-2001, 11:21 AM
I know a guy who wishes he had time to find out more about this...
05-18-2001, 11:42 AM
I know this guy who has an extra card but it is a Black Sunday card that would need a bootloader. I am sure he would just have to find it. If you want a virgin H card I know these guys who have purchased several on Ebay but you would want to make sure the seller has a good history for delivering this product in good order. They are approximately 200-250 dollars. I know this other guy who has an extra virgin H card but I am not sure he would want to come off it. Your friend will also need an emulator $75, a programmer $75-100 and a full time dedicated computer and keyboard that can be built for about $300 or you can purchase an old system and use that.
Or so I have heard.
05-18-2001, 01:06 PM
the guy I know....he knows a guy who can take care of all the techno stuff....I...He doesn't know jack about what a bootloader or emulator etc... is, but the guy he knows said if he were to come into an H card, he could set him up for testing.
the computer and other stuff sounds familiar to what he said....it sounded like this guy could get the "buddy rate" and the whole test kit pretty cheap IF he were to come up with an H card.
He'd have to check and see if the black sunday thing was a problem, because he really doesn't know anything about it...other than that other people who have testing services....think its very cool.
if you know someone well, you might email or smoke signal me and we could work out the details between these two strangers who in no way are connected to big daddy or iowanian. ;)
Parker...the guy that my friend knows...is very close to the vicinity of the place you used to live....not too far from a new "Lake Side" resort....
05-18-2001, 04:30 PM
The guy I know won't be available until Monday or Tuesday and I will let you know. If a Black Sunday card works for your friend, let me know.
05-19-2001, 01:05 AM
With a bootloader, black sunday card can be use again (but they can attack your card again
With a bootloader, an emulator, a programmer, and a computer, you can re-use the black sunday card as well. It is much safer because they don't know how to attack it yet.
05-19-2001, 01:13 AM
Direct TV. NFL Ticket. All Good.
05-19-2001, 01:19 AM
I know a guy who pays 80+ bucks a month, and the closest thing to porn is channel 512.. ;)
05-19-2001, 05:10 AM
Directv.....NFL Sunday ticket....All work and no NFL makes BRADLEY a dull boy...all work and no play makes.......
05-19-2001, 05:23 AM
I have both Direct Tv with NFL Sunday Ticket and cable.
My wife almost always wathes the cable programming, while I almost always watch the sat programing.
Does any one buy any of the other sports packages available?
I enjoy all the other major sports, but not enough to invest money into the programming packages.
05-19-2001, 09:50 AM
LOL! Brad....True, true...
05-19-2001, 09:55 AM
Being a Chief fan in Ca I have no choice! Do you think I am going to sit around and watch the Raiders every Sunday! Love my dish!
05-19-2001, 02:47 PM
Where in California are you at?
05-19-2001, 03:17 PM
I am in Eureka...thank God for the internet. Makes it pretty nice to keep up. Never been to a Chief game in KC...only at San Diego and Oakland. May go back there to see them play the opener with the Raiders...if I can get a ticket.
