View Full Version : FULL PAGE AD IN THE STAR

I think it's time all of us fans start taking a more agressive approach at making some changes on this team

I propose we all take up a collection to pay for a full page ad in the Star.

We'll need to decide what message to send to the Hunt family. We need to let them know we're all sick and tired of mediocrity......at best. Carl's 5 year plan expired many years ago. RRPP is not the only offensive game plan available.

Maybe we can get tinyevil to come up with the most effective ad.

So, what does everyone think ? Everybody chip in $10 or $20 bucks and maybe, just maybe the Hunt's will take notice we're not happy and they need to make some changes. At least it's something we all could do besides just bitching about the team on the planet.

I have a feeling that it will take A LOT of people at $10-$20 a donation to pay for the add. I wouldn't be surprised if an add like that wouldn't cost a grand or better for just one day. Even in the local fish wrap to run a small add for a coupld of days runs better than $100.

Just FYI - advertising rates for the star can be found here:
http://media.kansascity.com/images/...007RateCard.pdf

They don't actually list prices for "point of view" ads, but if I'm reading it correctly, a full page ad should cost somewhere around $5-10k.

Now that I think about it I'm not even sure I'd take their line, they have a really good front four and we didn't do that badly especially in the passing game. I guess I'd take Hutchinson, and Birk that's about it.

Id also take...

Rice over Parker
EJ Henderson over Kaufmann (and so did the Vikes)
Greenway over Donnie (age only)
Winfield over Law or Surtain
T Rich over Bigfoot

I might even prefer AP over LJ at this point, but that's mostly about wear and tear and salary cap hits.

The only players I prefer on our roster are Waters, TG, Bowe, LJ (close), our DE's, DJ, and Page. That's like 14-8 in favor of the Vikes.

Our roster is old and expensive. Theirs is young and more talented overall. The only place that they really really suck is at QB, but of course so do we.

jAZ

The ad in the paper isn't the point... it's the outcome (getting rid of CP).

To that end, I was thinking about this.

It needs to be a campaign, not an event.

Here's my suggestion:

1) Register a domain like ClarkPleaseFireCarl.com (available, FYI)...
2) Create a concrete message to rally the public around and put it on the website (ie, a letter to Clark Hunt making the case to replace CP)
3) Add a section on the website to sign a petition and donate money for an add in the paper
4) A handful of affordable radio ads (spend $250 or something like that... whatever can be raised).
5) With which ever radio station you buy the ads on (810, 610, etc.), negotiate an interview segment with one of the hosts.
6) Before you run the radio spots, call the Star, Pitch, or etc... and ask one of the reporters/editors if they would run a public interest-type article on your website and radio ads.
7) Maybe promote the idea/site at the various message boards, etc.

The purpose of all of this is to get as much exposure of the website and the message as possible for as little as possible.

The devil is in the details, but the key part of this (getting free coverage of your campaign) can work.

(When I was finishing my MBA I wanted to stay in Tucson and get a job, but the market here is somewhat limited. So as graduation neared, came up with the basic idea above but using it to get myself a job. I registered a domain, called the got the quotes on the radio ads ($50 bucks would get me a hand full of mid-night ads). I called the newspaper and told her about my plan and she agreed to cover it ("student's crazy stunt to get job in though market)".

That week, I got a great job through the normal channels, so I can't swear to how effective the newspaper articles are to turning out people, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a full page ad.)

If you get enough people visiting the site, signing the petition, donating money... you can buy an ad in the paper or more radio spots.

All of that will definately create a story worthy of talk radio, which I think is the key to building public pressure.

I think you top that whole thing off, by building toward a fan strike.

As an after thought, maybe you incorporate the pre-game "Red Out" events on Friday's. Either a booth, or banners, or something.

I think jAZ has the right idea. I think this thing would be all about the PR.

Is it going to motivate he Clark's to fire Carl, Herm? No.

But it ight jsut embarass them enough to start doing something with the offense. The way the LJ/Huard yelling (possibly) opened it up in the second half (if that's even true).

But I think the website would be a good anchor, though I might call it fixouroffense.org or something having to do with that, rather than the "fire Carl" rant that they've been ignoring for years.
I don't think you're going to get people to sell their season tickets, either. Most of them have had them for years and years and don;t wnat to lose their seniority.

Maybe we make our cause a one-game boycott? Just try to get everyone to not attend for one game. End the streak of continuous sell-outs.
Season holders get to keep their seats, The public gets a message. MAYBE something hapens then?

But no matter what we do, it WILL take a concerted effort among a combination of websites, media citizens, etc.
But we should appoint an eloquent spokesperson, and work the media. If we played it right, we could get on ESPN and NFLN etc. This kind of stuff, if planned right, people eat it up. Hell, the frigggen "leave brittney alone" guy is working a deal with MTV.

Use clips from the Vikes game of the announcers calling our plays before the snap. I continuously remember them saying 'Look, they've brought in Jason Dunn. He's going to block for LJ on that side.......See?

And there are a handful of commentator clips about how our offense fell from the top to the bottom in only two years.

Seriously folks....

As long as games are selling out..... this is pointless. All they need are 80,000 "true fans" to justify their success. They won't give 2 shits about < 1,000 of us voicing our opinion... even if it is true and valid. And there are too many fans that bitch all week about the Chiefs, and show up at Arrowhead on Sunday and drop $400. Until that changes, this money would be much better spent elsewhere....

And a few things you might not be thinking of....

How could you get everyone to agree on the message?
Who will collect the money, and can you agree on that?
How are you going to justify fan discontent when Carl points to consecutive sellouts(since '91)? What could you possibly print to overcome that fact and prove that fans are upset?

You're leaving yourself with no voice after the fact. If this is from a group of random fans, who would the Chiefs management respond to? They can't respond to "Chiefs fans", cause this would only represent a very very small % of "Chiefs fans". That's too easily dismissed.
What happens when management points to the fact that on paper, we're improved all around, and we're coming off a playoff year last year?

You underestimate the PR power of the Chiefs upper management. They would dismiss this faster than a fart in the wind, and you'd be left with even more displeasure and nothing to show for it.

Did George Washington worry about all that sh*t when he crossed the Delaware, Mr. KC Fish? Did Abraham Lincoln worry about all that sh*t when he freed the slaves? Did Martha White worry about all that sh*t when she invented flour? No!!!

It's time for true fans to stand for the spirit of good and well and at least one touchdown every two games or so!!! Grassroots movements start in the bitter, nutrient deprived soil of discontent. Not in the fibrous tumors of the worry wort.

I'm all for this... but....

THE CHIEFS WON! WHO THE **** CARES ANYMORE ABOUT FIXING THE ****ING TEAM THEYRE A WINNING TEAM! NEXT WEEK WELL BITCH BUT THIS WEEK WE SMILE! WE WON! WE WON! THE VIKINGS SUCK WORSE THAN US!

And this type of thinking right here.... which is much much more prevalent than you realize.... will prevent this type of message from ever having any affect. Most fans don't look at the team's future any further than the last game we played. Carl knows that full well, and masterfully plays that short-sighted "please me now" mindset to his advantage. The average fan is too easily content with the mediocre product the Chiefs have been pumping out the last 15 years. I hate it, but Carl is a successful shepard... and we continue to be the stupid sheep...

What would it cost to hire a plane pulling a banner over Arrowhead on Game Days. That would at least embarrass them. They used to do that before CP arrived. The banner said "Fire Steadman".

There haven't been planes allowed over arrowhead since 9/11.

They didn't fly directly over the stadium but they probably won't let planes even near it now.

So this is the point where people that enjoy the Chiefs every Sunday with their friends and families are supposed to apologize to you for it?

There was a plane flying around before the game pulling a sign, but I couldn't tell what it said...

...but it seems it can be done. In fact, IIRC you could see it from inside the stadium as well...

I got it! Tie a sign to the A-10's that flew over before the game...that would be awesome!!

Apologize to me? What the **** for? I don't have anything to do with it other than voicing my opinion in this thread on how effective a full-page newspaper add would be in bringing change to the Chiefs organization.

They have to clear out of the air space before the people start filing in therby decreasing its effectiveness.

If you want to get attention, you have to attack from several angles. Along with ads, you could write letters to the editor, picket Arrowhead, pass out fliers. The more people you reach, the better. Sooner or later the media will pick it up and run with it.

By the way, did I mention that I'm thinking of applying for OC?

You enjoy being a mediocre team year after year?

After awhile the shit gets old. I hope this team goes 2-14 or 3-13. It is the only way IMHO we will ever get real change.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of people tailgating pretty early on.

You can tell we aren't there yet. No one is willing to stop going to the games. The fans are still happy so there's no reason for Carl to change.

I went once last year and I went to opening day but it's very doubtful I will be back again this year. I'm not committing to them until they commit to us again.

I thought you liked the Chiefs? Why do you hate winning?

Be unhappy with everyone else!

They would have three hours for the tailgaters to see it. Plus it would annoy Carl. That is worth a lot.

Because as many people have suggested on this thread the only way to send a message to Clark is stop going to the games and buying tickets.

People are tired of the shit hence the reason why they are practically having to give away tickets and season ticket packages.

Yep I totally agree.

That is why I am seriously thinking about buying Royal season tickets. I see a GM that cares about winning and we a young and exciting ball club that is starting to compete with the big boys minus the Yanks.

On the other side I see my beloved Chiefs not attempting to get better just trotting out the same shit year after year.

OK my friend in the ad dept at the Star got me pricing.

Normal Price:

$14000 for a full page ad

He could probably negotiate it to around $11kish.

That is a lot of bread.

Anyone want to forego their 2008-2009 season tickets to finance this jab at the status quo?

It's cheaper to put in a folly-ad in the classifieds:
101: Announcements
104: Public Notice
106: Lost
107: Found
264: Moving/Storage
Sports page ad near the ti++y bar ads.

What about giant signs (posterboard size, anyway) in the parking lot. Especially if they're catchy enough that other fans that aren't on the Planet would buy some. You guys already have a presence there, and from what I hear it's ever expanding, much like my gut (and maybe yours, too.)

Make em easy to display, easy to read, and durable enough for multiple games. They'll get scooped up faster than them suckitjesus shirts, I bet.

A bonus round could include a gigantic sign visible from a blimp. Might even get television airtime with that.

Obviously, the key is the sign itself. Too brutal and the masses won't buy in, and you're just "disgruntled oddball". Too weak and it has no balls, even if it's widely seen.

What we need is someone with wit, charm, eloquence, with a big ol stinger for a tongue. Think we can find a person like that here? Maybe? The best zingers mix truth and humor, and that's the Planet's stock and trade.

I say people start submitting sign/ad ideas.

I'm all for positive change, but that Ad better be pretty creative and mean something, because I don't see anyone in the Hunt family simply reading an Ad in a newspaper and making organizational changes. Sorry if I'm being pessimistic, but seriously. It's the same thing as someone who calls in on the radio and says, "Yeah, all the Chiefs fans should stage a walk-out at the next home game!" What? That's not going to do anything productive at all.
