View Full Version : Why Do Rock Radio Stations In KC Suck??

I swear between 98.9, 99.7 and 101.01 they might as well be 1 radio station.

At any given moment on 1 of the 3 you will hear:

AC\DC, Metallica, Skynard, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd or Godsmack with the occasional Ozzy.

And what is sad is it is usually the same songs too. I swear this town sucks for radio. I don't listen much but it's a game my wife and I play when in the car, see how many of them are playing 1 of the above mentioned.

I am old enough to remember 106.5 KCI and I still say that was the best radio staion in KC. KY-102 used to be.

Johnny Dare's Spiccoli\Brett Michaels-Biker act I never cared for.

I just wonder if these guys do know there are other bands out there besides AC\DC?

And I wonder what makes these radio stations think everyone loves AC\DC that much?

People still listen to traditional radio??

This is why satellite radio and burning your own MP3's have become so popular.

In fact, alot of these new format radio stations popping up (the ones that play a mixture of everything) are a direct result of MP3's becoming so popular.

Back when I listened to radio, I thought 100.3 out of Topeka (or somewhere like that) was the best rock station. I knew it was time for an iPod when listening to a song I never hear on the radio through static was better than listening to a crystal clear song for the 5th time that day.

Not all of us have the disposable income to throw at satradio. I might have it but I'd just rather spend my money elsewhere right now. Maybe one day.

I'm not sure 96.5 qualifies as rock but they play entirely too much Beastie Boys for my tastes. Otherwise, that station is the one I listen to when I'm not on the AM side.

Its funny when people bitch about radio stations playing too much of the same thing.... but when we go "out there" for unfamiliar music or something new people turn to the station where they know the songs. We're in business to make money. Too much unfamiliar music turns off listeners, who leave, then ratings go down and advertising dollars leave, then the station shuts down.

The music is researched. It's what people have said they want and songs that test well among a particular audience. That's why it gets played. That's why it gets played a lot. Especially in a bigger market you can't afford to turn listeners to the competition for even one song. A set playlist will keep far more listeners than it turns away. There are a handful of stations that do a lot of album cuts and unfamiliar music. I promise you they don't make a lot of money. Kudos to them for staying on the air anyway.

Give the people what they want so they can bitch that they've got it. It's still the best job in the world... short of actually being a rock star.

You are absolutely correct.

People as a whole are sheep.

Top 40s stations are usually the highest rated stations, and people still go out and buy the music that is on them, when they could just turn on the radio, and wait 10min to hear what ever song they are waiting for........Mind Boggling.

Exactly...Example: I like Metallica, but the radio station only plays THREE of their songs over and over and over every day, dont tell me if they mixed it up a little people would turn the station. I have had this conversation with many people before, and they said they turn it becaue of this very reason.

No. Heh. Actually most stations have a much bigger overall library than they actually play at any given time. Say you've got a 2000 song library... you rotate about 600 at a time and change out 50% of them every month or so... then the other 50% the next month. Otherwise you're literally never playing anything but the same songs and it "freshens" the station back up every so often. Like it or not it works.

But he'd much rather tell her

When they both attended PS thirty-three....

"A," you're adorable, "B," you're so beautiful,
"C," you're a cutie full of charms.
"D," you're a darling and "E," you're exciting
And "F," you're a feather in my arms.
"G," you look good to me, "H," you're so heavenly,
"I," you're the one I idolize.
"J," we're like Jack and Jill, "K," you're so kissable,
"L," is the lovelight in your eyes.

"M," "N," "O," "P," I could go on all day.
"Q," "R," "S," "T," alphabetically speaking, you're OK.

U," made my life complete, "V," means you're very sweet,

Yes, very aware. Good stuff too. A) see post #37 B) Even older songs are researched and the top scoring songs get played, low scoring songs don't. Not every song makes it. And believe it or not there's no quicker way for a stattion to hurt it's cume ratings than by playing too many requests. One does not speak for many in the radio game. That's why most requests are often confined to shows or features.

Do yourself a favor and subscribe to Sirius if you love Rock/Classic rock music. It is some of the best entertainment/sanity money I've ever spent...

especially if you spend alot of time in a car.

IMHO you can never have too much Led Zeppelin and complaining about their music should mean a one way trip to Gitmo...

Amazingly satellite radio hasn't hurt commercial radio nearly as much as the industry thought it would. In the end many people still want the local feel as well as news, weather etc.

That poorly collected research was debunked a year ago as wishful thinking and marketing spin, and commercial radio interests are still fighting hard to limit satellite radio legally.

The early adopters of satellite were actually people who never listened to the radio anyway so it wasn't an audience that was lost to commercial radio, jazz lovers, classical, punk, and the poor traditional and outlaw country lovers who have been assaulted by NEW country on commercial radio, and then the truckers who are often out of range.

Now if the push into the mainstream audiences is successful with the additions of all the sports and specialty programming, it may still prove to eat away at the traditional radio audience.

Or, it's possible as more people subscribe to sat. radio, that it will shift to satisfy a widely mainstream audience, and the early adopters seeking something different will be left out in the cold again, as satellite becomes a commercial free version of the same old play list.

I wouldn't be surprised by either end.

At anytime i can turn on 98.9 or any of the other channels and know the song. Atleast play some rare stuff once in awhile. The worst is when they play stuff that you can hear on every other station. Our family is partial to the 96.5. My son is in a band and the Buzz has given them pretty good air play. He has a friend named Lazlo or Laslo or something like that who treats them well.

Satellite still has less than a 2 share nationally, and can't (yet) deal with local conditions. Once enough stations go HD and the HD radios start coming standard in new cars (2008 models of most Fords will have HD receivers), that'll marginalize satellite even more... as long as stations use their HD channels to FILL A NEED in the market. Radio guys: Are you HD yet? If not, are you planning to?

Yeah i listen to mp3's or sattilite but sometimes it just isn't practicle like fishing or painting, or getting some work done in the garage. At anytime i can turn on 98.9 or any of the other channels and know the song. Atleast play some rare stuff once in awhile. The worst is when they play stuff that you can hear on every other station. You figure you can hear back on black by acdc on the rock at anytime. Why have it on classic 101 the fox

WTF? Is it really that confusing? LMAO

Anyone remember Beezer on that old AM rock station KC had before we got 98.9?

Am I remembering that correctly? I think I was 13 at the time (or younger).
Beezer was actually the local host (along with someone else, can't remember the name) of Z-rock, a rock/metal station based out Dallas, TX and broadcast in 10-15 cities. It was on 1030 AM. It was easily the best modern rock station ever. Anything from Slayer to Pantera to Nirvana, with the occasional swear word. When Z-rock went away I was very sad.

Johnny Dare is even more annoying without Murphy. Carrie Cougar makes it suck even worse.

FM radio stations in every market are the same, and 99.999% of them suck. And what makes it so bad isn't just the incessant repitition, but also the jackass DJ's that speak the same idiotic banter on every station. You have the FM DJ voice guy, who generally is about one level above some pervert cruising 15 year old girls on myspace. Then you have his cackling female sidekick, who laughs like a hyena every time the superstar DJ cuts a fart. Then you have the buffoon sidekick- Usually a guy with a speach impediment, or a gay guy- something like that. And of course, most have the asinine FM DJ name, "Adam Bomb, Sandy Beach, Caddilac Jack, Cactus Jack. The whole industry is a giant bag of dog crap. And I really don't care if it's commercially viable. The Backstreet Boys sold millions of CD's, but that doesn't mean they don't suck.

Here's some research for you - stop playing goddamned Candlebox four times a day, every day. We were all collectively sick of their two hits by the time 1998 rolled around.

Greg from Johnny Dare's show was Beezer, and Dare was an afternoon guy, iirc.

The radio stations suck because all they do is play that jungle monkey music that makes my knees ache.

Same here. Either talk radio or my own music.
My own music - best. Satellite radio - good, better than regular radio by far. Talk radio - usually sucks as bad or worse than regular radio, unless it's Art Bell, then it's fun to listen just to see what kind of crazy, space alien wierdness he's going to come up with.

I haven't listened to regular radio since I bought a Sirius radio 3 years ago.

Yep.

My wife has Sirius in her car; love it.

In my car I listen to sports/news radio.
I seriously, can't stand listening to any FM Radio in KC.

I particularly can't listen to Johnny Dare; which is why i switched to sports radio 9 years ago.
