Anyone who has been paying attention over the last month and a half may have heard me mention about the pain I've been suffering in my neck and shoulders. Originally the Drs diagnosed it as a pinched nerve in a disc in my neck.

Well last week the pain got worse so they wanted me to go in for an MRI, and I did. The results came in last Friday, and they told me they wanted me to see a different Dr, but it had gotten late so I didn't get all the information about him. Well...this morning I did...he's an oncologist. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a doctor who treats cancer patients.

I don't know what this means, but I've never been more scared in my life. My wife is freaking out, she lost her father to cancer 10 years ago. I will keep you all posted as I find more out.

**UPDATE IN POST #50**

EDIT: OK, there seems to be some confusion (understandably) with who I am. I'm not the former "go bo" who is now "go bowe". I used to be Bugeater, but I changed my name to GoBo yesterday when Bo Pelini was hired as the new head coach of Nebraska. Yes, the timing was horrible.

GoBo,

I had a family member with cancer, and they took this approach...

http://www.naturallydirect.net/alkaline-cancer-natural-healing.htm

by eating and drinking ONLY alkaline foods, it balances the acids in the body, and flushed out the cancerous growths.

It worked for her... may be something worth looking into.

God speed.

The name change was yesterday, it has to do with Nebraska's new head coach, Bo Pelini.

All they said was something about an "abnormality, not sure of it's signifigance". I just spoke to a nurse at the time and of course they're not allowed to speculate on anything.

Hopefully they are just being precautious and you will be fine. All the best to you!
This is basically what it they're saying at this point, that they're trying to eliminate things and that there's really nothing to worry about (yeah right). They just sucked about six gallons of blood out of me to run some tests with. It could be something as simple as a blood disorder that's irritating my bone marrow. I really didn't understand a lot of what he was saying.

It's probably not necessary to leave this thread stickied, I'll bump it as I learn more. Again, thanks for all of the well wishes, thoughts and prayers. It means a lot in times like these.

My dad had to see an oncologist when he had a herniated disk in his back because he had moved during his MRI. Since he moved the coloration of his spinal fluid was distorted and that's why they sent him off to the "C" doctor.

In the end it was no big deal, and here's to hoping it's the same for you.

I'm certain you have confidence in your physician, Mr. GoBo. But, I'd demand some clear, definite information from him/her at this point. There's no need for you to have to worry needlessly or operate under limited information until you get in front of the specialist.

Can you not call them and tell them to give you the goods? They can, at a minimum, tell you why they believe a specialist is in order.

From what I can tell, the reason they think a specialist is in order, is because they aren't sure exactly what the problem is. It's very frustrating.

Pain is still there, but not as intense. The Dr had me switch to ibuprofen instead of the acetametaphine (sp?) to reduce inflammation in the disc in my neck, and it's been fairly effective. I still have oxycodone and hydrocodone to fall back on.

Apparently they think physical therapy can help strengthen the failing disc, and the pain in my shoulders is because muscles there are being strained by compensating for the bad disk. No, it doesn't make sense to me either.

Holy shit, man. I'm glad it is nothing of consequence.

Basically what it is parts of your body has to do things it isn't built to do to compensate for the broken stuff. Equate it to hurting your ankle, limping on it, and having your knee and hip start to ache because you can't walk correctly.

I would urge you to lay off the smokes. I'd hate to have the next one be of consequence.

Yep, I never realized how much upper body strength was in the neck, I thought it was just there for a convenient place to attach my head. And yes, I've recieved the smoking lecture repeatedly over this. It's Russian Roulette, and luckily this time the chamber came up empty. Quitting would be a monumental undertaking for me though.

I know it should be, especially with the smokes. It seemed like pretty simple math at first, after 20+ years of smoking why would some kind of cancer in the neck/throat area be a surprise at all.

Old habits die hard though...
They can only die hard if you try killing them. :p

Glad to hear things turned out ok!

It might make it easier to kick the habit if you replace it with something else that's less harmful. Maybe you could chew on a toothpick or a straw or start smoking crack or something instead.

I'm happy to hear the good news about your neck though. Hope the pain goes away soon too.
