I just moved and do not watch that much tv. I have not hooked up cable or internet yet. My laptop has a wireless thing built in so I have been getting it for free.

Just don't steal the whole thing... the rest of us would like to use it too.

It makes you subject to arrest in some places, if that matters.

Did you happen to get this laptop at a coffee shop?

I suppose it's wrong in some sense, but doesn't move me one way or another.

People can protect their internet connections from being squatted on.

Odd question and the answer is no. My son gave it to me for gift.

My laptop I "borrow" my neighbors wireless. I have a direct DSL line into my desktop and I am moving soon so I dont want to mess with buying all the wireless stuff myself.

Road Trip!!

The OATS bus doesn't go out that far.

Bob Dole
12-06-2007, 07:22 PM
that is hard to enforce.
IMO if the signal is unencrypted, and you are picking it up from your property (i.e. not trespassing), than the signals are passing over your property and its not stealing.

Can't find the story, but there was a guy prosecuted earlier this year for "stealing" the signal from outside a cafe offering free internet to its customers.

IMO, the guy should have fought it, if nothing else to have the courts define what "hacking" is. What he did wasnt "hacking."

My stepson graduates from basic next week. He gets to spend Christmas with his girlfriend and daughter, then he is off to Rip (some kind of Ranger stuff, but not the actual school) then to a Ranger Battalion (I guess, if he makes it through Rip).
I'm proud of the young man, and it's kind of fitting that he's starting his military career just as I'm ending mine.

I would mount a CAT5 jack in the wall and plug your laptop into it. Then when you get busted you can just say that you get your internet from the jack in the wall. aka plead stupid.

I work with a guy who has a laptop and doesn't pay for service. Neighbors, restaurants, work and whatever else allows him to usually have internet access. I have no problem with that, no skin off my nose. What bugs me is that the guy is constantly bitching about poor connections. He has even gone so far as to ask me about getting a better modem at work. That made me laugh long and hard. Cheap bastard.

that is hard to enforce.
IMO if the signal is unencrypted, and you are picking it up from your property (i.e. not trespassing), than the signals are passing over your property and its not stealing.

Even if you were stealing, they would have to be able to triangulate your location which is not easily done unless the offending computer is giving off some personel info other than the hardwared ESN or you are logging the sites visited for personel info (and if you are doing that, you might infact be stealing even though its going over your bandwith illegally).

That is incorrect. The Communications Act 2003 says a "person who (a) dishonestly obtains an electronic communications service, and (b) does so with intent to avoid payment of a charge applicable to the provision of that service, is guilty of an offence".

I am not saying that I don't do it, I am just saying that it is legally wrong. I have a neighbor up hill from me that has an in-ground sprinkler that has not been adjusted correctly for at least 2 years. Every night around 8pm his sprinkler starts, and most of his heads spray water into the street. Water runs down the curb, and in front of my house it pools up to several inches deep. Rather than drg my water house all the way to the corner of the yard to water a flower bed, I use a 5 gallon bucket and get the neighbors excess water out of the curb. This embarrasses my wife and if it were just my trying to save a few pennies I would undersand, but it is easier to throw a few buckets of water than it is to drag the house around. Legally is it wrong to use water that I know belongs to my neighbor if I don't have his permission? I don't know, but the way I see it, you can easily secure your wi-fi connection if you didn't want anybody else using it. If you leave it unencrypted and I happen to connect to it, as long as I am just surfing and not trying to connect to your pc to find nekid pictures of your wife or doing anything malicous, what is the big deal?

I love the house by our pool that took the trouble to name his wifi connection "FBI", but didn't encrypt it. I was going to use his connection but was afraid that the FBI had a secret office in our subdivision and that I would get caught for sharing.
