View Full Version : Weird Religion Question

First let me state, that I don't want this to turn into some huge religion debate thread.

I am not religious. My father was raised Catholic, and my mother Jewish.

For my whole life though, they have not been religious.

------

Now here is where it gets weird.

I really like Art. I am thinking about purchasing some art posters, or maybe just one, to put up on my wall at work.

The lady who is in the same area as me (which is also the main room in the office) is a huge Jesus-Freak (and in no way is that derogatory, its just the best way I can explain it).

For some reason, my favorite art happens to be paintings of Jesus or paintings w/ Jesus in them.

Would it be awkward if I put up a Jesus poster in general?

Would it be awkward if the Christian lady starts asking me about religion and I say I'm not religious?

Am I weird for liking Jesus paintings, being non-religious?

Im pretty sure that it is Roman God Saturn Devouring one of his Children.

The story goes that Saturn ate his Children because word was that one day one of his kids would overthrow him. Saturn's wife hid one of the Kids, and eventually this kid, Jupiter, would overthrow Saturn.

There was a Renaissance painter who emphasized the sexuality of Jesus in his art. It's pretty twisted. It will take me a while to find.

First, please don't take Chiefs Planet as a useful community to reach any kind of meaningful consensus about such important matters. There are simply too many irreligious and irresponsible posters here to give you the kind of feedback that would be of any use to you.

Your fascination with Jesus is part of God's initiative in calling you to Himself. You are a very lucky man - you are Hebrew by birth but have been exposed to Christ as the Son of God. Your Hebrew nature thirsts for the God of Israel and your spirit recognizes him (albeit imperfectly at this juncture) as the promised Son of David, the Jewish Messiah. I will pray for you as you are very, very blessed indeed! I would say display your poster of Jesus but expect to be forced to take it down.

You have a destiny to be drawn to the Messiah of Israel, and your fascination with Him is no fluke.

I'm thinking of a Leo Steinberg book that documents the sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art.

I like the pictures of Jesus and the lamb, the idea of Jesus as the Good Shepherd taking care of his flock had always been appealing to me.

Yeah, i hate to brag on myself but sometimes things just come naturally.

Thinking smart all the time will give you a headache from time to time though.
So it has its drawbacks.

I think there's a difference between being spiritual and religious. Taste in art is very subjective, and opinions are always going to be subjective. There might be some subconscious desire to find some answers, and that's reflected in your taste.

Put up the art you like. It says something about you, and can be a tremendous joy as well as an opening into conversations when strangers visit your home.

It may or may not be appropriate to put a Jesus poster up at your place of employment. You will probably have to think about your work environment and the specific piece of art to determine that.

You live in San Diego so, no, I don't think it would too terribly awkward to tell your workmate that you are not religious.

No, I don't think it is weird to like the art without practicing the faith. Some of the best art has been inspired by religion.

Using cultural objects in one's art is as old . . . well as cave drawings. So it would be great and natural to incorporate that into your art.

Or preach to others not to preach to others, by that "logic".

It's not odd. A lot of art from a lot of different periods of history was in large part religious depictions. If you leave those out, you are depriving yourself of appreciating some of the greatest art that humanity has produced.

It wouldn't be weird for a non-religious person to tour the sistine chapel would it?

Aside from the difficulty of obtaining Asbestos-soled shoes on short notice (I lost my pair), it was lovely.

j/k. Never been, but I've always wanted to see it.

being an artist, I'd prolly fall to my knees and bawl like a baby.

Michelangelo by far is my favorite artist of all time, with honorable mentions to LDV, Escher, Rockwell, Beirstadt, Parrish, Remington, Frazetta and Diego Rivera.
