If you haven't had a chance you need to watch Metro Sports' Danan Hughes' brilliant breakdown of the Chiefs multiple special teams errors yesterday. On the punt block, Boomer Grigsby went to a man blocking scheme, when the situation clearly called for a zone, umbrella scheme (special teams 101). Hughes showed another punt play for the Chiefs where Colquitt did a good job of pinning the ball down inside the 10 and with the Detoilet return man getting out of the way of the football, the Chiefs had 7 players inside the 10 in position to down the ball, but all 7 players essentially gave up on the play rather than scrambling behind the return man to be in position to down the ball.
Hughes also showed a kick return where the Chiefs wedge blockers were spaced too far ahead of Drummond, not giving him a chance at a productive return.
All of these are basic special teams plays that most teams perfect in the preseason... while the Chiefs still struggling with, in the second to last game of the regular season.
Very Mike Stock-esque
