I recently finished my HTPC build, but I was thinking about dropping in a soundcard that would enable me to output "bit-perfect" sound to my Onkyo receiver. With that being said, do you all really feel that lossless audio codecs such as FLAC and monkey audio really live up to the hype, or should we just place our faith in psychoacoustics and live w/ MP3?

I can tell the difference between 128/192/256, but when it comes to comparing 320 and the lossless codecs, I can't hear much of a difference through my headphones.

I suggest you a handful of tracks you know well that span a few genres, and compress them to a few different formats and compare.

And just for a sound card recommendation, I love my Chaintech AV-710.

EDIT: I was going to link you to the card through Newegg, but I don't see it listed. I originally snagged mine for about $25.

I've been looking for the Chaintech for a while but can't find it anywhere.

I don't think there's enough of a difference between 320 mp3 & FLAC to matter. Anything that I am THAT concerned with the sound quality of I buy a physical copy to play.

Convert the FLAC file to something that iTunes can play? Yeah you can do that by downconverting it to MP3 or something but it would defeat the point of having a FLAC file in the first place.

Try this (http://www.techzilo.com/convert-flac-to-mp3-audio/). It's a Windows XP/Vista freeware FLAC to MP3 converter and instructions on how to use it.

just throw it out of bounds and you have a flacco to cassel converter
