Walter Winchell

I noticed Rufus compared Whitlock to some guy named "Walter Winchell" in one of his stupid articles, so I went digging on wikipedia and read up on him. Interesting guy that apparently invented the gossip column.

The way he died was kind of sad:

Winchell's final two years were spent as a recluse at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Larry King, who replaced Winchell at the Miami Herald, observed, "He was so sad. You know what Winchell was doing at the end? Typing out mimeographed sheets with his column, handing them out on the corner. That's how sad he got. When he died, only one person came to his funeral."

Seems like a cool guy who would be more appreciated today. Any old timers remember Walter Winchell?

I'd feel bad for the guy if it wasn't for all the lives he helped Sen. Joseph McCarthy destroy. He wasn't quite another "Roy Cohn", but he sure was a cheerleader for Tailgunner Joe.
