Titan was the greatest gladiator by far. He was the black guy with the flat top and the mustache. That guy looked like he could snap a limousine in half. Even compared to the other gladiators he was enormous.

They would put someone in that sumo wrestling ring with him, or on that football field game, and you felt like you were watching a kid playing with an insect. It was only a question of how much he wanted to make it hurt.

I liked the original, kinda. It always bothered me though that the ONLY contestants they would bring in were small and scrawny. Would love to have seen some contestants even close to the same physical stature as the gladiators (I still want to see one of those guys get knocked out).

I enjoyed the show when it was on the first time. The only problem was that, over time, the women (both contestants and gladiators) became more and more mannish. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake this time.

On a similar theme, I was a big fan of "Battle of the Network Stars". It was fun watching the starlets run.

It would be cooler if the deck wasn't so stacked in favor of the Gladiators. All the male contestants are under 6' going against guys that are 6'-3", 230 lbs and up. There are some good sized amatures out there that would give the Gladiators a run for their money.

Helga is 6'-1", 205 lbs.

Last Telecast: April 10, 1976

Play-By-Play

Charlie Jones

Color Commentator

Lynn Shackleford

Field Interviewer

Dick Whittington (1975)

Regis Philbin (1976)

SYNOPSIS

This free-for-all was popular enough to also have a Saturday version for kids called Junior Almost Anything Goes.

The format was in the tradition of the old Beat The Clock, pitting teams from different towns and states against each other in all sorts of strange stunts. The competitions were held outdoors and the coverage was handled as in a sports event, complete with play-by-play, color and field interviews. Winning teams got to participate in regional championships.

Contestants had to: carry a loaf of bread while sliding across a greased pole suspended over a pool; balance an egg on their heads while riding down an obstacle course in a golf cart; dive into a pool and climb onto a raft to dress up in formal clothes.

Other stunts included greased runways, swimming pools filled with peanuts and chocolate pies in the face.

I vaguely remember back in the 70's on Wide World of Sports, they had these competitions between like the 77 Royals Vs. the 77 Yankees.

It was kinda similar to the Battle of the Network Stars. It would end with a Tug of War contest as well.

Anyone else remember that??

In my church youth group we used to have "Battle of the Classes" patterned after BotNS. We'd put the Freshman and Sr. together, against the Soph and Jrs together, against the counselors. And the climatic event was always the tug-o-war.

Agreed.

It pops up on obscure cable channels every now and then.

Too bad it only lasted 1 season.

Another show i loved that ive mentioned a few times on here was "Cupid"

Jeremy Piven at his best IMO.

Whew... I'm going to have to go to bed. I just read "Penny" Marshall.

How about that chick banging her head off the bar, drawing blood, and keeping on? They must have a rule against diving in the water off that wall.

Not as good as the original. Had to much of the WWE flair to it. Contestants are kind of pussies and so are the gladitors but still its wasnt that bad. That elimnator beat hell out of all of them.

this was awful. even with the throwbacks to the old show, i was rolling my eyes every segment. the contestants were pussies and the gladiators were retarded. Ninja Warrior is a far superior show. Even with those annoying japanese announcers screaming at the top of their lungs.

I dont know about you guys but i would cheat like hell in this show. Cant use my hands? no thanks. i would punch and kick in all these competitions.

My highlight: the girl crab walking on the bridge. what a f*cking moron. second being head meets pole.

That was a lot of fun.

However, if I had not recorded a buffer on the DVR to skip through commercials, I would have probably lost interest during the third or fourth break.

I enjoyed the smack talk between the competitors, but I really wish all the Gladiators were as cocky as Wolf and Titan. LOL @ the Wolf schtick!

I'll watch tomorrow with the hopes of a Gladiator flying through the air after the "Assault."

The hosts suck.

It's as cheesy as hell but damn that Eliminator is a bitch. Nice to see the handbike in there...I remember lots of contestants having trouble with that.
I watched the last half of the first hour of the show. The women had the right idea with the handbikes, just fall and climb up the other side. They should get rid of the ladders on the other side to force the contestants to use the handbikes.

I thought it was entertaining, but it looked like they still were working out some kinks on certain events, and the contestants were using bad strategy.

Most of the male gladiators look pretty homosexual. I mean they got one dude wearing a sports bra thing that barely covers his nipples, then that Wolf guy with his mustache and he's wearing eyeliner. LMAO

The female gladiators on the other hand, except for two of them, are real fine. I'm definetely not mad at a woman with some muscles and all toned up, as long as they still look feminine and have some curves to em, and these definetely did. Sexy.

The show would be much better IMO if they didn't talk so much. Maybe it's just been a while, but it seemed like the original barely talked to the contestants and NEVER talked to the Gladiators. It was more about the actual battle than making a spectacle of the whole deal.

And I'm with others - I think there used to be a penalty for not completing each step of the eliminator. If it were me, I'd immediately fall off of the hand bike on purpose since there's no penalty.
