WOW, I was just talking today to one of my KC sales reps about the old KY102

I remember their bump commercial:
"KY 102 Plays Kick Ass Rock and Roll!!!"

I'm still bitter about the crap that KY played during my teenage, I'll not miss them at all for that reason alone. It was amazing that Omaha had better radio stations then we did, at least at that time.

KY-102 was kind of a KC institution. They used to have a pretty rabid fan base.

98.9's pretty much the king in KC.

That sucks... it was my favorite station when I was out of the range of 100.3 in Topeka, back when I listened to radio. Commercial-free Mondays on 99.7 was the only time I turned off the CD player and iPod.

98.9's pretty much the king in KC.

98.9 seems like it plays more modern rock?

KY-102 (at least when i knew it, back in the 80's and 90's) would play more classic 70's album cuts. Not just the singles.

And 98.9 will give you more than your fill of Zepplin, AC/DC, etc. during the day.

When I was in Maryville, sometimes you could get 101.9 out of Omaha, it was a cool modern rock format like 105.9 "The Laser" in Lawrence used to have.

Then they changed formats at one point and became just like 101.1 here in KC, which was cool too. I remember they used to run Ray Manzarek's show at night.

I remember when Q104 in KC used to be Pop.There was a time before the Top 40 years of Q104 (remember Super Q?) when they were an "underground" rock station known as KBEY. I used to work in the studio that KBEY vacated and found all kinds of hashpipes & shit above the ceiling tiles. :bong:

That does suck.

But, hold out a little hope. KY has died once before and the fans petitioned it back to life as 99.7 (that was probably about 5-6 years ago).

I'm in Columbia now, so it has no real impact on me, but it's still a little sad.

If 101 goes off the air, on the other hand, I'm coming back to town with pitchforks in hand and will start indiscriminately stabbing KC residents for allowing it to die while tripe like 93.3 lives on...

"Bob" Dobbs
01-10-2008, 09:41 PM
There was a stretch there in the late 70's-early 80's that KY was untouchable. A few stations tried going up against them unsuccessfully (anyone remember 106.5KCI?), but nobody had any success at all until about 84 when KCFX came on. Interestingly, the Fox back then was among the first stations running a "new" format called "Classic Rock". I was lucky enough to be a part of the Fox crew back in those days. Good times.

All radio stations are like that in the morning....they all do their morning show. And Dare is extremely popular so of course they want him to talk, he draws big ratings.

I'd much rather hear Hinder than Fall Out Boy and whatever else shitty ass emo music is out like MCR and all that garbage.

I listened to Ky102 in High school back in the late 70's I bet I still have an old stop sign plastered in KY 102 stickers up in my old bedroom.

I remember one afternoon they were supposed to show up at our school in their van and they never showed so we piled into a couple cars and headed down to the station. We got to go in the studio and talk on the air with the DJ can't remember his name now. He let us pick the next hour of music it was pretty cool.

I'm assuming those are all the same band..since they sound about the same. I like the singer from that band because he has actually sings.

I suppose I like the second one the best because they lyrics are touching, and it doesn't have really heavy riffs. The first song isn't too bad..I don't care for the screaming/growling in the chorus..and I'm not much of a fan of the heavy riffs.

The third song is alright, but that guy has a pretty melodic voice, so it's not difficult to listen to. Overall, I'd have to say I don't hate listening to it, I wouldn't change the station if any of the three came on, but I'd probably rather hear the second. Although the video kinda sucked, but oh well. Just looks like the guy is lip-syncing.

Heh.. I like Godsmack for their lyrics, but not necessarily the songs they play on the radio. I hate Voodoo (and the sequel) because it doesn't even sound like Godsmack, yet it was one of the few they played over and over and over. I really enjoyed the Faceless album, and it's one of the rare post~'90 albums that I can listen to without skipping every other song... but they hardly played anything from that one.

Max Floyd is in the rock n roll HOF...and they boot him for satellite download corporate rock. (BTW...Tanna Guthrie truly has a face for radio. Yikes!)

Entercom is a face-less, soul-less radio conglommo.... a product of Reagan's deregulation of radio in the 1980's.

Few independent stations can survive anymore. Conglommo plays the same song in KC that's on in Kalamazoo...that's on in Kankakee...that's on in Kingman. Just one big satellite feed. Sad, really. Takes all the local flavor out of your station that's supposed to serve "in the public interest."

Power to the small people!!!

89.7 The River in Omaha is a pretty kick ass station, and it's out of some small college, iirc.

Power to the small people!!!Radio has traditionally (but admittedly today, not so much) been regarded as another kind of show business. Emphasis on BUSINESS. The business reality is radio stations must be run as efficiently as possible just to make a couple of bucks. That being said, let me point out that there are smaller groups of broadcast owners that are starting to turn "conventional radio wisdom" on it's ear. I am lucky enough to be employed by one. We now have 20-some stations across the country that are NOT on satellite but, are however, locally automated... The music plays from the local stations harddrive, which gives us the opportunity to play the odd request here and there with shows voicetracked by local people serving their neighbors. As a byproduct, that approach eliminates the concept of the same song playing in Kankakee and Kingman, AND it's cheap to produce. If anything can save terrestrial radio, that'll be it. The point is, we're growing quickly and profitably, which is starting to catch the attention of the big boys. I'm thinking the pendulum's swinging back to localism.

I think Radio stated going downhill when Mama Carlson hired Norris Breeze, and he tried to blackmail Andy.

Thanks. Now If I could only find a copy of the classic painting Mama Carlson had hanging over her fireplace. It was the lower half of a gallows, showing just the victims feet dangling.

Remember the wall of bumper stickers behind Andy's desk? I was working at 96X in Lawrence at the time and one of our stickers was on the board. I was so proud.:)

Very nice. I was trying to find the episode where one of the cast almost goes to work for a "computerized" station for that post, but couldn't find it in the episode guide.

Now if you'll excuse me, "Gotta Dance" is coming on!

most people got tired of listening to the same songs for the last 35+ years...
Haven't they done studies that show whatever Americans are listening to when they are 15-16 is the music that they stay with the rest of their lives?

Haven't they done studies that show whatever Americans are listening to when they are 15-16 is the music that they stay with the rest of their lives? For the most part that's true. The folks who grew up between 67-75 are in the money demo now. The alternative to Classic Rock would be the Partridge Family, and I'm sure nobody wants THAT.

Well it switched over today, I went to go pick up the Dog from the groomer, when i got out of the Car it was the classic "99.7 KY" when i came out it was "99.7 the boulevard"

Sounds like the format isnt going to change that Much just adding Dave "sucks butthole" Matthews and more U2

I'm sure they'll just update the timeframe they cover. They'll lose the 60's-early 70's and do more 90's-current. It's probably gonna be a bit "pop"pier and FAR less deep classic tracks.

When I was sixteen we used to get a bunch of beer and hang out down at the station on weekend nights. I grew up knowing all the DJs. I made out with Katie Mcguckin at the Queen Billy Squire concert. This is a sad day seeing the Great KY turning into an Adult Wuss station. How gay is that.

KY will be back, maybe union broadcasting could pick them up. 97.3 ky? the station is such a kc icon, why shouldn't a local company purchase the call letters and hire the dj's?
