CHIEFS SECURE FIFTH OVERALL SELECTION IN 2008 NFL DRAFT
FEB 22, 2008, 8:47:19 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs secured the fifth overall selection in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft based on the outcome of a coin flip conducted at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, IN this morning.

Kansas City currently holds a total of 10 picks in the 2008 NFL Draft, owning an additional pick in the fifth round (Miami – QB Trent Green trade), the sixth round (Tampa Bay – RB Michael Bennett trade) and the seventh round (N.Y. Giants – K Lawrence Tynes trade).

Atlanta secured the third overall pick in this year’s draft by winning a coin flip with Oakland. Oakland was awarded the fourth overall selection based on their finish behind Kansas City in the AFC West standings. The Chiefs finished ahead of the Raiders in the division standings based on a better record against common opponents.

So we got nothing for Sims.
Now that he is GONE we have an open roster spot for someone that can actually play DT and TWO Crispy Kreme donuts shops going bankrupt.

Other than that just be glad he is not here anymore.

So we got nothing for Sims.

One of the 4 extra picks we have is in the 2009 draft. Not sure if it is the one for Sims, or the one for Bennett.

Exactly what he was worth!

Again, one of our extra picks is in the 2009 draft.

Yeah, the pick for Sims is in 2009. Not sure why. Maybe they re-worked something when Bennett was traded, since we're taking all the Bucs' low round picks away.

I thought we got multiple picks from Bennett.

... and the seventh round (N.Y. Giants – K Lawrence Tynes trade)...

Does this mean that the Chiefs get to draft Mr. Irrelevant this year!?

Don't all of the compensatory picks end up at the bottom of each round?

Don't all of the compensatory picks end up at the bottom of each round?

Now that you mention it, I think you're right about that. I don't suppose there's any chance that either (a) there are no 7th round compensatory picks this year or (b) the Chiefs get the last one is there? I think it would be cool to draft Mr. Irrelevant, particularly if you somehow hit on a guy who made it in the league.

The trade for Sims gave TB the option to give us a conditional pick in 2008 OR 2009. Not sure when they have to make the decision by.

The trade for Bennett gives us a pick in 2008 AND in 2009.

So, barring any further trades, the best we can hope for is 11, if TB chooses to compensate us this year rather than next.
