Chiefs cornerback Benny Sapp explored the free agent market hoping to find more money, but instead he found a good opportunity, reaching a one-year, $705,000 deal with the Minnesota Vikings.

Sapp, 27, spent the past four years as a backup in the Chiefs' secondary, a veteran unit that featured Patrick Surtain and Ty Law. He had six starts during his four seasons and had two interceptions.

The Browns were among a handful of teams he talked to since free agency opened, but he flew to Minneapolis on Monday and decided that was the right spot. Sapp was an undrafted player out of Northern Iowa.

Good luck Benny.

Pretty good loot for a guy who is 5'10 and like 170. Keep working hard and good things will happen.

I'm glad to see him go. He played with heart, but he will never be a starter in the league, not a good one ,anyway.

They'll win the SB next year.

So who will smack him upside the head since Waters won't be there?

Do we play them next year? Training camp at least. Waters could do it then.

At least now the Vikings will have to put up with his noises in the film session.

I find it hard to believe that he would have a better future with the Vikings than the Chiefs. I'm bummed to see him go. I don't think we always used him in the best manner, but he had football instincts and tackling ability.

Can't say that I'm really sad to see him go. He played with heart, good luck to him.

Sapp should've been resigned.
He would've been a cheap option at Nickelback.

The Vikings can probably use him in his proper role which is as the 4th or 5th CB who just plays special teams....

Not much cheapers. Isn't minimum salary around 500k?

$285K/yr

The minimum salary structure for 2007 is as follows:

Rookies and first-year players $285,000
Second-year players $360,000
Third-year $435,000
Fourth-year $510,000
Fifth- through seventh-year $595,000
Eighth- through tenth-year $720,000
Eleventh-year and longer $820,000

Sapp was brought in around 2004. He's played 4 years - he's above 500k.

My point was, we could replace him with a rookie. What he was contributing to the Chiefs was equivalent to a dime a dozen.

I wish we would have resigned him...he was probably our best CB last year...which is sad...

We have zero depth at the position. He's familiar with our defense, and it doesn't make sense to not resign him at that kind of price. Good luck Benny, Mr. Flopnuts and a few others are sad to see you go.

Pffft. Whatever.

We have Surtain who'll be our stopgap #1, and Brackenridge who'll be our nickel. Patterson may emerge as a good option off the bench. We can easily draft one or two guys.

Sapp played better last year than I thought he could but I can't say I'm upset to see him go. He just wasn't that gifted physically so his ceiling was pretty low.

Sapp was a good nickel blitzer and a decent special teams guy, unfortunately he wasn't much of a cover guy.

I like his intensity, but he's definately replaceable by a mid round draft pick. After all, Herm's got a keen eye for young talent.

Can't say I am sad to see him go. He used to steal stuff out of people's dorm rooms when he played for Iowa, and then was kicked off the team for multiple infractions. He ended up finishing his career at UNI.

I guess his temper tantrum on the sideline was the final straw.

TRR is right...Sapp was a punk and kicked out of Iowa, did better at UNI...he does have character issues.

After watching that clip again....screw benny sapp....enjoy the love boat in Minnesoooooooooota.
