Glad someone in the media had the guts to call this admission out. Vitale is awful and doesn't come close to deserving a spot in the HOF.

Pretty much. He's a legendary announcer. Some of them guys do get in. I dont really mind that he got in at all.

he's been around the game for a very long time. He's coached a couple teams if i remember correctly. I can't stand the guy either because hes such a Duke and North Carolina Homer, but I don' disagree with him getting into the hall.

Can you think of another announcer who should be in ahead of DV?

Put him in the announcer's HOF. It's not like he's a legendary owner or coach. It's not like he's awesome. He just is. Kinda like dirt. It's there and there's nothing you can do about it.

I don't think announcers should be in.

I think we should put sponsors in. I nominate Coors Light and BMW for 2009 induction.

hall of fame means like fame...famous. If you think college basketball you probably think
Vitale, adolf rupp, and john wooden.

Well, if they're going to put in announcers, why not put in GOOD announcers such as Raftery or Elmore?

Vitale is just a loud-mouthed cheerleader and usually shows a complete lack of knowledge of teams besides Duke.

Ooooh - cheerleaders. Let's put cheerleaders in the HOF as well.

I could get behind a cheerleader hall of fame. Litterally

As long as Kriegel's article is factually correct here's the problem with what many supporters of Dicky V are saying:

"Dick Vitale wasn't a player. His coaching career — culminating with a 34-60 record for the Detroit Pistons — was a failure. And while the Hall recognizes media members with its Curt Gowdy Award (a distinction Vitale has already won), one cannot be enshrined as a mere broadcaster."

You cannot be chosen because you're a broadcaster, they enshrined Dicky as a "contributor" to the game. Sounds like a back door entrance to me. I think they should've stopped with the media member award and left it at that.

I don't think announcers should be in.

I'm pretty sure that in the parlance that's common, "announcers" work the P.A. system.

Assuming that you are correct, I'd agree.

Vitale is one of the most annoying human beings on earth - he's basically college basketball's Howard Cosell. And that "baby" thing is just flat out creepy.

Forgive me, I thought Howard Cosell was among the best.

I would say he'd done well to bring a positive identity to college basketball...but its pretty obvious he lost interest when Duke got bumped out of this years tourney

That was part of his value. He generated discussion.

I watched because I liked him. You watched because you hated him. Then we'd argue later.

No Dick Vitale = No ESPN (probably). Nobody would believe it now but ESPN came very close to folding up around 1984 or 1985. Sportscenter had shrunk to one 15-minute airing a day (no repeats) and ESPN was actually off the air 5-6 hours a night.

No, I'm not a big Vitale fan.

Sorry, but just because he's annoying as **** doesn't mean he hasn't meant a lot to the sport and its place in the national consciousness.

My views of Vitale changed a lot when I saw him in "Hoop Dreams". He gave a hell of a speech to some of the AAU players there.

Is fudgePacker in the Hall? If not, there should be a worldwide petition against his induction. If he's in, then that lowers everything about the Hall.
